Jaipur gets UNESCO World Heritage tag

  • The Walled City of Jaipur has made its entry into the UNESCO World Heritage Site list. It is the 38th site in India to get this tag.
  • The announcement was made after the 43rd Session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee, underway at Baku (Azerbaijan) from June 30 to July 10.
  • To date, 1,092 sites in 167 countries have been inscribed on the World Heritage List.
  • Some other places included in the list are: Dilmun Burial Mounds (Bahrain), Budj Bim Cultural Landscape (Australia),  Archaeological Ruins of Liangzhu City (China),  Ombilin Coal Mining Heritage of Sawahlunto, (Indonesia), Mozu-Furuichi Kofun Group: Mounded Tombs of Ancient Japan (Japan),  Megalithic Jar Sites in Xiengkhouang — Plain of Jars (Lao People’s Democratic Republic), French Austral Lands and Seas (France), Vatnajökull National Park – dynamic nature of fire and ice (Iceland), Paratyand Ilha Grande – Culture and Biodiversity (Brazil), Ancient Ferrous Metallurgy Sites of Burkina Faso (Burkina Faso), Babylon (Iraq), Natural and Cultural Heritage of the Ohrid region (Albania), Migratory Bird Sanctuaries along the Coast of Yellow Sea-Bohai Gulf of China (Phase I) (China) and Hyrcanian Forests (Islamic Republic of Iran)

India ranked 86th in Henley Passport Index 2019; Top- Japan and Singapore

  • In its latest Henley Passport Index 2019, India has been ranked at 86th spot. Japan and Singapore have shared the top spot. They have a mobility score of 189.
  • India has a mobility score of 58 and shares the 86th spot with Mauritania and Sao Tome and Principe.
  • Henley releases this ranking as and when it receives the updated data from IATA.

South Central Railway Commissions India’s Longest Electrified Railway Tunnel

  • The South Central Railway (SCR) zone of the Indian Railways has commissioned India’s longest electrified railway tunnel in Andhra Pradesh
  • The 6.6 km tunnel has been built at a total cost of Rs 460 crore between Cherlopalli and Rapuru stations. It is part of the Obulavaripalli-Venkatachalam new railway line.
  • New Australian Tunneling Method (NATM) has been used in the development of the tunnel.

Now SEBI to transfer 75% of its cash surplus to Government

  • In its Union Budget 2019-20, Central Government has announced that The Securities and Exchange Board of India will now have to transfer 75% of its surplus from the general fund every year to the Consolidated Fund of India that is managed by the Central Government.
  • SEBI should constitute a reserve fund and 25% of the annual surplus of the general fund should be credited to this reserve fund. The remaining i.e 75% should be transferred by SEBI to the Consolidated Fund of India.
  • SEBI has a surplus of 3,170 crore as per its 2017 balance sheet.

World’s first floating farm operational in Netherlands

  • The world’s first ever floating farm has been built in Rotterdam in the Netherlands.
  • The farm has been designed by Peter Van Wingerden. The aim of this farm is to shorten the distance between the production and consumption of food.
  • With the majority of the world’s population now living in urban areas, the demand for fresh food in cities is on the rise.

Rajni Saraf appointed as CFO of J&K Bank

  • Jammu and Kashmir Bank has appointed Rajni Saraf as its chief financial officer (CFO).
  • The Board of Directors of the bank has appointed Rajni Saraf as chief financial officer of the bank for a period of 6 months with effect from July 5, 2019.

  • The International Co-operative Day is held annually on the first Saturday in July since 1923 by the International Co-operative Alliance to celebrate the co-operative movement.
  • In 2019, the International Co-operative Day is being observed on July 6, 2019.
