Reliance Industries to Acquire 87.6% Stake in Google-Backed Fynd

  • Mukesh Ambani led Reliance Industries Ltd. has announced to buy majority stake in a Mumbai based technology startup ‘Fynd’ which is funded by Google, in a move to transform into online powerhouse.
  • RIL has agreed to buy 87.6% in Shopsense Retail Technologies Pvt, which operates the Fynd platform for Rs 295 crore ($42 million/Rs 2.95 billion) with an option to further invest Rs 100 crore. The deal is expected to be completed by December 2021.
  • Google-backed Fynd is an online platform that acts as a bridge between physical retail stores and buyers online and helps you to find branded products as well as shop on the platform as well just like any e-commerce site.

Apple issues Apple Credit Card in partnership with Goldman Sachs

  • Apple in partnership with Goldman Sachs has started the issue of its Credit Card that is named “Apple Card”. The issue has been started from August 06, 2019.
  • It is a virtual credit card that is built-in the Apple Pay App and hence lives on an iPhone. The physical version of the Apple Card does not have any number like other credit cards. Even CVV number is not written on it.
  • The transactions are authorized by Apple Pay — Face ID, Touch ID, unique transaction codes. Goldman Sachs is the issuing bank for the Apple Card.

US Treasury officially labels China a “currency manipulator”

  • The US Treasury has officially labeled China a “currency manipulator”. Currency manipulation is a situation when a country intentionally influences the exchange rate between its currency and the US dollar to gain “unfair competitive advantage in international trade”.
  • This comes after the People’s Bank of China (Chinese central bank) allowed the renminbi to fall below a key threshold, marking a dramatic escalation in the trade war between the two economic powers.

What happens when a country is designated as “currency manipulator”?

When the US Treasury labels a country as a currency manipulator, the next step would normally be for negotiations to begin between the two countries.

Mohali Gets India’s First 3-D Traffic Signal

  • The Mohali traffic police have launched 3-D Smart Traffic Signal dubbed as ‘Intelights’, which is first-of-its-kind initiative in India, to curb the rising problem of traffic congestion.
  • The new system has wireless sensors system which would automatically switch on the green, yellow and red signals depending upon the number of vehicles coming from that particular side and would reduce the time to stop at the traffic signals.
  • The wireless system has been devised by the students of a Chandigarh University and has been installed at the traffic crossing near the Airport Road on a pilot project basis.

Aamir Khan Launches Mission Shakti Sports Initiative in Maharashtra

  • Indian Film actor Aamir Khan launched the Maharashtra government’s sports initiative named Mission Shakti on August 4, 2019
  • Mission Shakti sports initiative aims to train athletes from Chandrapur and Gadchiroli districts of the state for international events like the Olympics that would help to bring laurels to India in the future.

Former New Zealand Skipper Brendon McCullum Retires From all Forms of Cricket

  • Former New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum has announced to retire from all forms of competitive cricket after the conclusion of the ongoing Global T20 Canada.
  • The 37-year-old former Black Caps skipper had already retired from all forms of international cricket in 2016 but continued to play various T20 leagues across the globe. 
  • During his entire cricket career, McCullum played 101 Tests scoring 6453 runs (12 hundreds and highest score of 302), 260 ODIs (6083 runs with five hundreds) and 71 T20 Internationals fetching 2140 runs. 

Hiroshima Day (Anti Nuclear Day/ Nagasaki Day) : August 6

  • Hiroshima Day takes place every year on August 6 to commemorate the day in August 1945 when an atomic bomb was dropped on the Japanese city of Hiroshima on August 6 by United States, followed a few days later by another drop on the city of Nagasaki on August 9.
  • Although these bombings effectively ended World War II, the two cities were terribly destroyed and casualties were estimated at around 200,000, mostly civilians.
  • This was the first time in the history of warfare when a nuclear bomb was used against a nation. 
  • The Day is observed to advocate, pray and work for a ban on all nuclear weapons and an end to war and violence through anti-war and anti-nuclear discussions and demonstrations around the world.
