Economic Survey 2018-19 – Highlights

  • Chief Economic Adviser Krishnamurthy Subramanian, who prepared the Economic Survey, said the theme of report is to enable shifting gears to accelerate and sustain a real GDP growth rate of 8% and thereby achieve the vision of making India a $5 trillion economy.
    • Economic Survey 2018-19 has been guided by “blue sky thinking.”
    • GDP growth rate is set at 7 pc in 2019-20, up from 6.8 pc last fiscal 2018-19. In 2017-18 it was 7.2%
    • A target to Make India a USD 5-trillion economy by 2024-25 for this a sustained growth of 8% is required.
    • The survey highlights need for a robust and resilient Infrastructure to Create a $10 trillion economy by 2032.
    • Decline in NPAs should push up CAPEX cycle.

UIDAI Opens its First ‘Aadhaar Seva Kendra’ in Delhi and Vijayawada

  • Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has opened its first exclusive ‘Aadhaar Seva Kendra’ (ASK) at Akshardham Metro station in New Delhi.
  • The second such Aadhaar centre has been opened in Vijayawada
  • These Aadhaar centres will make it easier for citizens to apply for a new Aadhaar card or update existing ones.
  • UIDAI has an ambitious plan to set up 114 such centres by the end of 2019.
  • Although thousands of Aadhaar centres are being run by banks and post offices currently but the Aadhaar Seva Kendras (ASK) are the first specialized centres operationalized by UIDAI.

Cabinet Approves Increase in Minimum Support Price of Kharif Crops for 2019-20 Season

  • The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has approved to hike the Minimum Support Prices (MSP) of all Kharif crops for 2019-20 Season to boost farmers’ income,
  • The decision is in line with the principle of fixing the MSPs at a level of at least 1.5 times of the all India weighted average Cost of production as announced in the budget 2018-19.

India’s first Design Development Centre ‘Fashionova’ launched in Surat

  • India’s first Design Development Center has been launched in Surat, Gujarat. It is named ‘Fashionova’.
  • The launch of Fashionova will promote the city in the field of the fashion design sector.
  • The main objective of this studio is to provide a strong platform to all those who have a flair of the apparel business.

Maharashtra tops in NITI Aayog’s Agricultural Marketing & Farm Friendly Reforms Index

  • As per the Economic Survey 2018-19, Maharashtra has achieved first rank in the NITI Aayog’s launched “Agricultural Marketing and Farmer Friendly Reforms Index (AMFFRI).
  • Maharashtra scored 81.7 out of 100. Gujarat ranks second with a score of 71.5. Rajasthan (70.0) and Madhya Pradesh (69.5) and Haryana (63.3) are the top 5 states in the index.
  • The Index was launched in 2016 and ranks states based on the degree of reforms they have undertaken in agricultural marketing. 

3rd Global Sunflower Seed Meet to be held in Mumbai

  • India will host the 3rd edition of the International Sunflower Seed and Oil Conference (ISSOC) 2019  in Mumbai from July 19-20, 2019.
  • The event will be hosted by the Solvent Extractors’ Association of India (SEA).
  • Union Minister of Commerce & Industry Piyush Goyal is likely to be the Chief Guest.
  • India is hosting the program for the first time. The last two edition were hosted by China and Ukraine.
  • Participants including industry leaders, experts, researchers, and government representatives from across the world will attend the conference.

RBI appoints A K Misra as additional director in J&K Bank

  • The Reserve Bank of India has appointed A K Misra as additional director on the board of Jammu and Kashmir Bank (J&K Bank). He is a former executive director of RBI.
  • A K Misra shall hold the office for a period of two years up to July 2, 2021 or till further orders.

IMF Approves USD 6 billion Loan to Cash-Strapped Pakistan

  • The Executive Board of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has approved USD 6 billion loan for cash-strapped Pakistan over a period of three years on July 4, 2019.
  • The loan amount will help to support Pakistan’s economic plan that aims at returning sustainable growth to the country’s fragile economy and improving the standards of living.
  • The USD 6 billion financial aid includes an immediate disbursement of USD 1 billion while, the remaining amount will be phased over the duration of the programme.

Harideesh Kumar Appointed as Director of Institute of Banking Personnel Selection

  • Karnataka based B Harideesh Kumar has been appointed as the Director of Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS) for a period of three years.
  • Before this, he was the Executive Director of Canara Bank. 
  • Kumar started his banking career with erstwhile Vijaya Bank in the year 1978.

Hima Das Clinches 200m Gold at Poznan Athletics Grand Prix

  • Ace Indian sprinter Hima Das has bagged the women’s 200m gold at the Poznan Athletics Grand Prix 2019 in Poland.
  • She clocked her personal best of 23.65s to claim the title.

American Auto Industry Legend Lee Iacocca Passes Away

  • Legendary American automobile executive Lee Iacocca has passed away. He was 94.
  • Mr Iacocca is best known for the development of Ford Mustang and Pinto cars and saving Chrysler Corporation from bankruptcy.
