Important Cabinet Approvals: 3 July 2019

  • The Union Cabinet has approved the following MoUs and proposals on July 3, 2019.
    • Maldives – Cooperation in the field of Health sector and Shipping
    • Morocco – Strengthening mutual cooperation between the judiciaries of the two countries
    • Proposal for easing out of three airports viz. Ahmedabad, Lucknow and Mangaluru of Airports Authority of India (AAI) through Public Private Partnership (PPP) for operation, management and development under PPP for a lease period of 50 years.
    • Proposal for Grant of Organized Group ‘A’ Service (OGAS) to Group ‘A’ Executive Cadre Officers of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) and extension of benefit of Non-Functional Financial Upgradation (NFFU) and Non-Functional Selection Grade (NFSG).

Chhattisgarh CM launches ‘Jan Choupal’ programme in Raipur

  • Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh,  Bhupesh Baghel has launched a ‘Jan Choupal’ programme in Raipur.
  • Under this programme, public meetings will be held once every week to discuss the issues of the people.

Jio launches ‘Digital Udaan’, a digital literacy initiative in partnership with Facebook

  • Reliance Jio has launched a new digital literacy programme “Digital Udaan”, aimed at providing digital literacy to the first time internet users who are using the connected internet ecosystem and apps for the very first time.
  • The Jio Digital Udaan programme is being launched across 200 locations in 13 states in partnership with Facebook.
  • As part of the initiative, Facebook will handle the content end and its relevance to the target audience, and also provide training programmes with videos and information brochures to those who will handle the literacy initiative on behalf of Reliance Jio.
  • As a part of the Digital Udaan initiative, Jio will engage with users every Saturday to help them learn about the JioPhone features, use of various apps and internet safety including use of Facebook on JioPhone.

RBI Constitutes Working Group on Core Investment Companies; Head- Tapan Ray

  • The Reserve Bank of India has constituted a Working Group to Review Regulatory and Supervisory Framework for Core Investment Companies.
  • The working group has six members and is headed by Shri Tapan Ray. He is a Non-Executive Chairman of Central Bank of India and former Secretary, Ministry of Corporate Affairs, Govt. of India.
  • The committee will suggest measures to strengthen corporate governance and disclosure requirements for CICs, assess the adequacy of supervisory returns submitted by CICs and suggest changes therein and various other things for the betterment of CIC.

Karnataka Bank launches web tool (Vasool So-Ft) for NPA recovery process

  • Karnataka Bank Ltd has launched the web tool named ‘Vasool So-Ft’ (Vasool So-Fast) – to digitalise the NPA (non-performing asset) recovery process of the bank.
  • The web tool Vasool So-Ft was launched by MD & CEO of Karnataka Bank Mahabaleshwara MS.
  • The tool will enable easy and faster processing, real time information and immediate decision making in the recovery area.

Punjab & Sind Bank setups Cen-MARG for MSME for credit facilities

  • Punjab & Sind Bank has set up the Centralised MSME & Retail Group (Cen-MARG) for credit facilities at its head office in New Delhi. The unit is named as Cen-MARG.
  • Now, all MSME and retail credit approvals will be performed at this centralized setup. Cen-MARG was inaugurated by S. Harisankar, MD & CEO of Punjab & Sind Bank.

Christine Lagarde to be the next president of European Central Bank

  • Christine Lagarde has been nominated as the president of the European Central Bank.  She will replace Mario Draghi, whose term ends on October 31, 2019 
  • Christine Lagarde is the Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund. She has announced to temporarily relinquish (give up) her responsibilities as head of IMF. Economist David Lipton has been appointed as the interim MD (Acting Managing Director) of IMF in place of Lagarde. 
  • The European Central Bank is the central bank for the Eurozone, which comprises 19 member states of the European Union.

Rahul Gandhi Steps Down as Congress President

  • Rahul Gandhi officially resigned as the President of Indian National Congress on July 3, 2019.
  • In the letter, Gandhi said that he is responsible for the defeat of Congress party in Lok Sabha elections 2019. 

Ambati Rayudu Announces Retirement from All forms of Cricket

  • Ambati Rayudu, the Indian middle-order batsman announced his retirement from all forms and levels of cricket on July 3, 2019.
  • The 33-year-old batsman started his first-class career with Hyderabad in 2002. He has played 55 ODIs for India.

India Lost to Pakistan in 2019 IBSF Snooker World Team Cup

  • Pakistan defeated India 3-1 in men’s team event to clinch the IBSF Snooker World Team Cup 2019 held in Doha, Qatar on July 2, 2019.
  • Indian team comprising of Pankaj Advani and Laxman Rawat lost to Pakistan’s pair of Asjad Iqbal and Muhammad Bilal.

Birla Group Chairman BK Birla Passes Away

  • Renowned Industrialist Basant Kumar Birla passed away on July 03, 2019. He was 98.
  • BK Birla was the Chairman of the BK Birla Group of Companies as well as patron of some 25 educational institutions spanning all over the country.

Momir Bulatovic, Former President Of Montenegro, Passes Away

  • Momir Bulatovic, the former president of Montenegro passed away. He was 62.
  • Bulatovic served as the President of Montenegro from 1990 until 1998.

World Sports Journalists Day: July 2

  • World Sports Journalists Day is observed on July 2 to mark the services of sports journalists for the promotion of sports.
  • Th day was established in 1994 to commemorate 70th anniversary of International Sports Press Association (ISPA).
  • The ISPA was founded on the July 2, 1924 during the Summer Olympics in Paris.

World UFO Day: July 2

  • The World UFO Day (WUD) is held on July 2 every year globally. It is a day dedicated to the existence of Unidentified Flying Objects (UFO) by World UFO Day Organization (WUFODO).
  • WUD aims to raise awareness about the existence of UFOs and encouraging people to think about the possibility of us not being alone in the Universe.
  • Initially, the day was observed on June 24. Later, WUFODO established July 2 to commemorate the day.

International Plastic Bag Free Day: July 3

  • The International Plastic Bag Free Day is held on July 3 around the world to spread awareness that a plastic bag free world is possible and that sound environmental alternatives to single use plastic bags are available.
  • 2019 is the 10th edition of the celebrations.
