One Nation – One Ration Card Scheme Implemented in 4 States on Pilot Basis

  • The One Nation-One Ration Card scheme of the Government of India has been launched in four states on pilot basis on August 1, 2019.
  • These 4 states are Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Gujarat.
  • Under the scheme, families who have food security cards can buy subsidized foodgrains from any ration shop in these states.
  • To avail the service, their ration cards should be linked with Aadhar Number.
  • The Centre has planned to extend the programme to all remaining states by August 2020 to enable the beneficiaries buy subsidised foodgrains from ration shops in any part of the country.

India 7th largest economy in terms of GDP in 2018, US on top: World Bank

  • India has been ranked at 7th in terms of GDP in the World Bank’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) rankings in 2018. In 2018, India’s GDP was $2.72 trillion.
  • The US is on the top with a GDP of $20.5 trillion, followed by China on second with $13.6 trillion GDP. Third is Japan ($4.9 trillion),  Germany ($3.9 trillion) is fourth, UK ($2.82 trillion) is fifth and France ($2.77 trillion) is sixth.
  • In 2017, India had overtaken France as the sixth-largest economy.

India Ranked as 46th Highest Risk Country in Water Stress Index 2019

  • India has been ranked as the 46th highest risk country in the world in the Water Stress Index 2019, formulated by London-based risk analytics firm Verisk Maplecroft.
  • As per the index, 11 of 20 largest Indian cities face an ‘extreme risk’ of water stress while 7 of them are in the ‘high risk’ category.
  • The Water Stress Index has taken into consideration the projected population growth trends to rank the cities facing the biggest threat to their water resources.
  • It measures the water consumption rates of households, industries and farm sectors and the available resources in rivers, lakes and streams.

Amit Shah to Head GoM to Tackle Mob Lynching

  • Government has reconstituted a Group of Ministers (GoM) that was constituted in 2018 to combat lynchings. Now the GoM will be headed by Amit Shah. He has replaced Rajiv Gauba as the head.
  • The members of the GoM are External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari, Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad and Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Thawar Chand Gehlot.

EAC-PM sets up task force on employment; Head- Bibek Debroy

  • The Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister (EAC-PM) has set up a task force on employment. The task force is headed by NITI Aayog member Bibek Debroy.
  • The task force will suggest ways to revive growth and employment to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The EAC-PM is an independent body to give advice on economic and related issues to the Government of India

SBI (Shanghai) becomes 1st Indian bank to link up with China payment system

  • The State Bank of India (Shanghai branch) has become the first Indian Bank to be connected to the connected to China’s National Advance Payment System (CNAPS).
  • CNAPS is a real-time settlement services for all payments cleared in mainland China, as well as in all clearing banks in offshore yuan centers, such as Hong Kong. The CNAPS system is complemented by its international counterpart, the CIPS (China International Payments System or Cross-Border Inter-Bank Payment System), launched in 2015 with the aim of boosting international use of the Chinese currency, yuan.
  • SBI is the only Indian Bank to have obtained the license to do business in local currency and also inducted to the CNAPS.

West Bengal Launches Campaign ‘Save Green, Stay Clean’ to Preserve Greenery

  • The West Bengal government has launched an awareness campaign named as ‘Save Green, Stay Clean’ for preserving the greenery and keeping the environment clean in the state.
  • The campaign was launched State Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in Kolkata on August 1, 2019. The state will also observe this day every year.
  • It also plans to distribute more than 1 lakhs saplings throughout the state for spreading of greenery.  

Journalist Ravish Kumar wins 2019 Ramon Magsaysay Award

  • Indian Journalist, Ravish Kumar has been selected for the 2019 Ramon Magsaysay Award. He is a senior executive editor at NDTV new channel.
  • Overall 5 people have been selected for the 2019 Ramon Magsaysay Award. The other four are: Ko Swe Win from Myanmar, Angkhana Neelapaijit from Thailand, Raymundo Pujante Cayabyab from Philippines and Kim Jong-Ki from South Korea.
  • The award is the highest award given to Asian individuals and organizations and is named after former Philippine President Ramon Magsaysay.

Rishad Premji replaces Azim Premji as new Wipro chairman

  • The son of Azim Premji, Rishad Premji has been appointed as the new executive chairman of Wipro Ltd.
  • However, as announced earlier, Azim Premji will continue with the company as the non-executive director.

India Celebrates 143rd Birth Anniversary of National Flag Designer Pingali Venkaiah

  • India is observing the 143rd birth anniversary of the renowned freedom fighter and the designer of the national flag Pingali Venkaiah on August 2, 2019.
  • Pingali was born on August 2, 1876, near Machilipatnam in Andhra Pradesh.
  • The National Flag design by Pingali was approved by Mahatama Gandhi in a Congress meeting in Vijayawada in 1921.

World Breastfeeding Week 2019: August 1-7

  • The World Breastfeeding Week (WBW) 2019 is being observed from 1-7 August 2019.
  • The focus of the week in 2019 will be on protection, promotion, and support of breastfeeding.
  • The theme of the World Breastfeeding Week 2019 is “Empower Parents, Enable Breastfeeding”.
  • The week is organized by WABA, WHO and UNICEF since 1991.

Former Welsh Cricketer & Coach Malcolm Nash Passes Away at 74

  • Former Welsh cricket player and coach Malcolm Nash, who played first-class cricket for Glamorgan has passed away. He was 74.
  • Nash (left hand bowler) was best known for being the bowler who was struck for six sixes in an over by Garfield Sobers of West Indies on 31 August 1968.
  • It was the first time any batsman had hit six sixes in an over in first-class cricket.
