Govt launches “e-Aksharayan” software for editing text on scanned images

  • The IT ministry has launched a desktop software e-Aksharayan to enable editing of text printed on scanned documents and it can be downloaded for free from its website.
  • e-Aksharayan is a desktop software for converting scanned printed Indian language documents into a fully editable text format in Unicode encoding.
  • The software supports editing in seven Indian languages – Hindi, Bangla, Malayalam, Gurmukhi, Tamil, Kannada & Assamese.

Chhattisgarh CM launched Mobile Distribution Scheme ‘Mobile Tihar’

  • Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh, along with actress Kangana Ranaut, launched a smartphone distribution scheme, ‘Mobile Tihar’, under the Sanchar Kranti Yojna (SKY).
  • The scheme is for distribution of smartphones to women and students, covering 45 lakh women and 5 lakh students.
  • As part of the scheme, 556 new mobile towers will be installed across the state.

First ‘Nepal-India Think Tank’ Summit held in Kathmandu

  • The first Nepal-India Think Tank Summit was held in Kathmandu to foster greater collaboration and knowledge-sharing among the think tanks of the two countries.
  • The summit was jointly organized by the Asian Institute of Diplomacy and International Affairs and Nehru Memorial Museum Library. 
  • The main objective of the summit was to strengthen bilateral relations between India and Nepal through multi-faceted collaboration among think-tanks in both the countries. 

RBI releases data on Composition and Ownership Pattern of Deposits with Scheduled Commercial Banks (SCBs)

  • The Reserve Bank released data on the composition and ownership pattern of deposits with scheduled commercial banks (SCBs) as on March 31, 2018. The highlights of which are:
  • Uttar Pradesh was the highest contributor to incremental deposits by households for the second consecutive year, with Maharashtra, Telangana and Karnataka also recording significant shares in deposit mobilisation.
  • More than half of bank deposits were contributed by individuals, who held the highest share across all population groups (rural/ semi-urban/ urban/ metropolitan); their share in total term deposits also increased during 2017-18.
  • The shares of current, savings and term deposits stood at 9.7 per cent, 32.1 per cent and 58.2 per cent, respectively, in March 2018.
  • Nearly two-thirds of incremental deposits were contributed by the household sector, followed by the foreign sector and the financial sector.
  • Private sector banks mobilised more incremental deposits (nearly 60 per cent) than other bank groups, a unique feature characterising developments in 2017-18.
  • On an outstanding basis, public sector banks held around two-thirds of total deposits; the private corporate sector, however, maintained substantial deposits with private sector banks.
  • Metropolitan branches achieved the highest mobilisation of bank deposits during the year and accounted for more than half of total deposits in March 2018.
  • Eight states (i.e., Maharashtra, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat and Kerala) accounted for over two-thirds of total deposits.

Reliance SurpassesTCS to Become India’s Most Valued Company

  • Oil-to-telecom conglomerate Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) has surpassed India’s biggest software services firm Tata Consultancy Services Ltd (TCS) to become the country’s most valued firm in terms of market capitalization as per the data from the BSE for April-June Quarter.
  • RIL recorded a market cap of Rs 7.51 trillion compared to TCS which was valued at Rs 7.43 trillion.
  • Reliance share price has consistently been trading higher for third consecutive session and rising 6 percent in these sessions due to highest ever profit reported for the June quarter.

Gopalkrishna Gandhi selected for Rajiv Gandhi Sadbhavana Award

  • Former West Bengal governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi has been selected for 2018 Rajiv Gandhi Sadbhavana Award for promoting communal harmony and peace.
  • The award will be presented to Gopalkrishna Gandhi at a special ceremony on August 20 at Jawahar Bhawan. The award, which carries a citation and cash amount of Rs 10 lakh, is given on the occasion of the birthday of former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi.
  • Former recipients of the award include Mother Teresa, Ustad Bismillah Khan, Mohammed Yunus, Lata Mangeshkar, Sunil Dutt, Dilip Kumar, Kapila Vatsyayan, Teesta Setalvad, Swami Agnivesh, K R Narayanan, Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, Muzaffar Ali and Shubha Mudgal.

  • The 3rd BRICS Film Festival took place in Durban along with the International Durban Film Festival from 22-27 July.
