Government Constitutes Committee Under MoCA Secretary to Review the Competition Act

  • The Government has constituted 9 member Competition Law Review Committee to review the Competition Act.
  • The committee will be responsible to review the Act/ Rules/ Regulations, in view of changing business environment and bring necessary changes, if required.
  • The Review Committee comprises of the following:
    1. Secretary, Ministry of Corporate Affairs (Chairperson)
    2. Chairperson, Competition Commission of India (CCI) (Member)
    3. Chairperson, Insolvency and Bankruptcy Board of India (Member)
    4. Shri Haigreve Khaitan, M/S Khaitan & Co.(Member)

PM Modi Inaugurates Development Projects Over Rs 7000 crore in Gujarat

  • The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, was on a visit to Gujarat on September 30, 2018 to launch a series of development projects from Satapar village near Anjar in Kutch district worth more than Rs 7000 crore. 
  • Following are the important set of projects 
    1. Inaugurated the Mahatma Gandhi Museum in Rajkot set up at the Alfred High School 
    2. Unveiled a plaque to mark the inauguration of a public housing project of 624 houses.
    3. Witnessed the e-Gruh Pravesh of 240 beneficiary families
    4. Inaugurated the Mundra LNG terminal, the Anjar-Mundra Pipeline Project and the Palanpur-Pali-Barmer pipeline project, at Anjar. 
    5. Inaugurated modern food processing facilities, including Amul’s ultra-modern Chocolate Plant, at Anand 
    6. Launched the incubation centre cum centre of excellence in food processing for promoting entrepreneurs and startup.
    7. Launched Mujkuva Solar Energy Cooperative Group of 11 farmers which is aimed to double the farmers’ income by selling the surplus electricity to the power company. 
    8. Laid the foundation stone of first dairy plant of Amul at Kolkata in West Bengal through video conferencing. 

AIIB Approves $455-Million Loan for Rural Road Project in AP

  • The Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) has approved loan worth $455-million road project in rural areas of Andhra Pradesh for an improved road network connecting with markets, schools and other services.
  • The project aims for construction and upgradation of more than 6,000 km of roads connecting around 3,300 rural habitations in Andhra Pradesh. 

Niwari to be 52nd District of MP from October 1

  • Niwari will become the 52nd district of Madhya Pradesh, with effect from October 1, 2018.
  • IAS officer Akshay Kumar Singh (2010-batch) will hold the interim charge of the first District Collector of the new district till further orders.

India’s Mars Probe Completes 4 Years in Orbit: ISRO

  • Based on the report of ISRO, India’s maiden interplanetary mission named the Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM), has completed four years orbiting the red planet.
  • The mission, launched on November 5, 2013, placed itself into the Martian orbit on September 24, 2014.
  • The designed mission life of MOM was six months, however, it has been sending scientific data for four years.

Bachendri Pal to Lead month-long Rafting Expedition to Clean Ganga

  • A 40-member team led by Bachendri Pal (first Indian woman to climb the Mount Everest) will undertake a month-long rafting expedition “Mission Gange” in October, 2018.
  • The objective of the “Mission Gange” is to clean the river Ganga and spread awareness on waste management.
  • The team including 20 women member will comprise of Twenty-six employees of Tata Steel, eight Everesters, five IIT graduates and a radio jockey representing various parts of the country. 
  • The expedition will start from Haridwar on October 5 and traverse through Bijnor, Farukhabad, Kanpur, Allahabad, Varanasi, Buxar and end at Patna on October 30, covering a distance of 1500 km downstream during the expedition.

K V Mohankumar Wins Vayalar Award for Novel ‘Ushnarashi’

  • Novelist K V Mohankumar has been honored with 2018 Vayalar Ramavarma Memorial Literature Award for his novel titled “Ushnarashi: Karappurathinte Ithihasam”,  revolving around the Vayalar uprising. 
  • The prestigious award, instituted by the Vayalar Ramavarma Memorial Trust, comprises a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh, a statuette and a citation.

India Wins 3 Medals at Archery World Cup Turkey

  • India has clinched three medals at the Archery World Cup Final in Samsun, Turkey held on September 29-30, 2018. 
  • Abhishek Verma won a silver in the mixed team event after teaming up with Jyothi Surekha Wennem.  He also bagged a bronze medal in men’s compound event. 
  • Ace Indian Recurve archer Deepika Kumari won a bronze medal in the women’s recurve event.

Hamilton Wins Russian GP

  • Britain’s Formula One defending champion Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) won the Russian Grand Prix 2018.
  • With his third Grand Prix victory in a row, Hamilton extended his lead in the 2018 Formula One championship to 50 points.
  •  Valtteri Bottas (Mercedes’) of Finland stood third followed by Germany’s Sebastian Vettel (Ferrari) at third position.

World Maritime Day 2018

  • Every year the International Maritime Organization (IMO) observes World Maritime Day to celebrate the international maritime industry’s contribution towards the world’s economy, especially in shipping.
  • The exact date is left to individual Governments but it is usually celebrated during the last week in September, generally the last Thursday in the month.
  • In 2018, the day was marked on September 27 and IMO observed 70 years.
  • The World Maritime Day theme for 2018 is “IMO 70: Our Heritage – Better Shipping for a Better Future”.
