India ranked 96th in UN E-Government Survey 2018

  • India has been ranked at 96th in the E–Government Development Index of the UN E-Government Survey 2018. Denmark has topped the Index. 
  • The Index is released every two years by United Nations.
  • In the E–Participation Index the top position has been jointly held by Republic of Korea, Denmark and Finland. India is on 15th spot in this index.

Rs. 41127.86 Lakh Allocated for Conservation of Protected Monuments during 2018-19: Dr. Mahesh Sharma

  • An amount of Rs 41127.86 Lakh has been allocated during the fiscal 2018-19 for the conservation work on protected monuments of National importance in the country, under the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).

Shripad Yesso Naik Lays the Foundation Stone of the 2nd Phase of Construction of NEIAH in Shillong

  • Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for AYUSH Shri Shripad Yesso Naik laid the foundation stone of the 2nd Phase of Construction of North East Institute of Ayurveda & Homeopathy (NEIAH) at NEIAH Campus, Mawdiangdiang, Shillong on 29th July 2018.
  • The approximate estimated cost of the construction is Rs 40.80 crore for an area of 10481.53 sqm and will comprise of residential accommodation for students, doctors and staff and guest house.
  • The institute was formally inaugurated on 22 December 2016 to offers four and a half year degree course in Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery and Bachelor of Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery from the academic year 2016-17 onwards.
  • The Minsiter said that the NEIAH can become the hub for researches in Ayurveda and folk medicine for the entire South East Asia.

3rd Kalam Livable Planet Conclave (KLP)-2018 held at New Delhi

  • The Dr. A.P.J Abdul Kalam Centre along with Kalam Technical University, fondly remembered Dr. Kalam on his third death anniversary by organizing 3rd Kalam Livable Planet Conclave (KLP)-2018 at New Delhi.
  • The “Right to Water initiative” was launched by NITI Aayog Vice Chairman, Dr. Rajiv Kumar. The Right to Water initiative has been undertaken by Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Centre. The project aims to create a water-secure and water-efficient India through quality research, education innovation, volunteer connections, better community participation and governance. The project’s three-pronged strategy of “Availability, Access, and Innovation” is targeted at ridding India of her ongoing water crisis and water poverty.
  •  ‘Right to Water’ website was launched as an initiative by the Dr. Kalam Memorial InnoBlu Centre to encourage startups in the water domain.

AP to set up ‘iHub’ for research and scientific learning

  • The Andhra Pradesh government will set up ‘iHub’ (the intelligent hub), a first-of-its kind global research centre for scientific learning.
  • An initial investment of Rs 245 crore spread over five years will be made for this. 
  • The government has already entered into an MoU with UNESCO Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Education for Peace and Sustainable Development (MGIEP) for the purpose. The setup cost for the iHub will be USD three million and about USD 2.2 million annual expenses.

Pradhan Lays Foundation Stone of Skill Training Centre for Women

  • The Union Minister for Petroleum & Natural Gas and Skill Development & Entrepreneurship Shri Dharmendra Pradhan has laid the foundation stone for permanent campus of National Skill Training Institute (NSTI) for Women at Mohali, Punjab.
  • The NSTI Institute is first such institute for Punjab and only one of its kind in India which is exclusively for women. 
  • The Minister also launched a unique Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Kendra (PMKK) which would admit differently abled persons as well, also a first of its kind in India at Mohali. 
  • NSTI for women and PMKK for differently abled in Mohali are being launched under “Skill India” initiative of the Government of India.
  • Besides, the minister also launched India’s first in-phone guide and mobile application “Go whats That”  in Chandigarh.

Rs 215-Cr Meghalaya Milk Mission Launched in Shillong

  • The Union Minister for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Shri Radha Mohan Singh launched the Meghalaya Milk Mission in Shillong to meet the demand-supply gap in the per capita milk availability in the state.
  • The mission will facilitate in achieving the Centre’s goal of doubling farmer’s income by 2022 through promotion of milk business in the state.
  • Under the mission, the government has sanctioned project of Rs 215 crores through National Cooperative Development Corporation (NCDC) that will be utilised for various training under dairy farm, chilling centre and purchase of milch animal.

HSBC India appoints Surendra Rosha as CEO

  • The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC) has announced the appointment of Surendra Rosha as Chief Executive Officer for HSBC India.
  • Rosha, currently HSBC’s Head of Financial Institutions Group (FIG) for Asia-Pacific, will succeed Jayant Rikhye, who is taking a leave of absence for medical reasons.

Lewis Hamilton wins 6th Hungarian Formula 1 GP

  • Lewis Hamilton of Britain (Mercedes) won the Hungarian Grand Prix for the sixth time of his career.
  • Sebastian Vettel stood second while Kimi Räikkönen was third.

July 30: World Day against Trafficking in Persons

  • World Day against Trafficking in Persons 2018 is an annual event held on July 30th to raise awareness of the situation of victims of human trafficking and for the promotion and protection of their rights.
  • The World Day against Trafficking in Persons was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly, in its resolution A/RES/68/192 which designated July 30 as the World Day against Trafficking in Persons.
  • The theme for 2017 World Day against Trafficking in Persons is ‘Responding to the Trafficking of Children and Young People’

Eminent Bengali author Ramapada Chowdhury passes away

  • Sahitya Academy awardee Bengali writer Ramapada Chowdhury passed away. He was 95. 
  • He has authored famous novels like Kharij, Bari Badle Jay and Abhimanyu. Ramapada Chowdhury had penned several famous literary works such as ‘Pratham Prahar’ (1954), ‘Banpalashir padabali’ (1960), ‘Ekhoni’ (1969) and many more.
