India’s First Corn Festival Begins in Madhya Pradesh

  • The first corn festival of India has been organised in Chhindwara, Madhya Pradesh. The festival is one of a kind international event. 
  • Madhya Pradesh is one of the largest corn producing states in India, with Chhindwara being the highest corn producing district.

Punjab to Launch ‘Aajeevika Grameen Express Yojana’ on Oct 2

  • Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh will launch – Aajeevika Grameen Express Yojana – on October 2 to provide interest-free loans to members of self help groups for purchase of a vehicle not costing more than Rs 6 lakh.
  • The loan amount has to be paid back within a maximum period of six years after which the vehicle will be transferred in the name of the member of the self help group.
  • The scheme is being launched under the National Rural Livelihood Mission and is aimed at benefiting 123 self help group families.

WHO Launches Initiative to Reduce Alcohol-Related Deaths

  • The World Health Organization (WHO) has released new initiative and technical package named SAFER, outlining five high-impact strategies that can help governments reduce the harmful use of alcohol and related health, social and economic consequences.
  • SAFER provides five high-impact strategic actions prioritised for implementation to promote health and development:
    • Strengthen restrictions on alcohol availability.
    • Advance and enforce drink driving counter measures.
    • Facilitate access to screening, brief interventions and treatment.
    • Enforce bans or comprehensive restrictions on alcohol advertising, sponsorship, and promotion.
    • Raise prices on alcohol through excise taxes and pricing policies.
    • Action is needed to reduce the burden of alcohol-related harm in low-, middle- and high-income countries.
