SC Constitutes 3 Member Panel To look Into Aspect of Jail Reforms

  • The Supreme Court has formed a three-member committee headed by its former judge Justice Amitava Roy to look into the aspect of jail reforms across the country and suggest measures to deal with them.
  • The committee will also look into the various issues concerning women prisoners as well as over-crowding in prisons.

National e-Vidhan Application (NeVA) to make all the legislatures of the country paperless

  • NeVA, an initiative by Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs, aims to make all the Legislatures of the country paperless by making the proceedings of the Houses digital.
  • It is an attempt to provide the information about the functioning of House to the common citizen at the click of a button.
  • The iOS and Google app of NeVA along with the NeVA Website, will act as a repository of data related to the business of all Legislatures in the country in a uniform manner.
  • The NeVA aims to live up-to its potential of being ‘One Nation, One Application’.

India to be 100 bn FDI Destination by 2022: PHD Chamber

  • As per the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry, India is likely to have USD 100 billion FDI inflow per annum by 2022 as volumes of foreign direct investment are increasing year after year.
  • PHD Vice President D K Aggarwal said that the annual FDI inflows in the country increased from USD 36 billion in 2013-14 to USD 62 billion in 2017-18.

First assembly of ISA, 2nd Ministerial of IORA and 2nd REINVEST Meet to be held in India

  • The First Assembly of International Solar Alliance (ISA); the 2nd Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) Renewable Energy Ministerial Meeting and the 2nd Global Renewable Energy Investment Meeting and Expo, (REINVEST- 2018) will be organised by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy from October 2-5, 2018 in New Delhi.
  • The three events will be inaugurated in a common function by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, in the presence of Mr Antonio Guterres, Secretary General, United Nations on October 2 in Vigyan Bhavan, New Delhi.
  • The Business and Technical Sessions of ISA Assembly, IORA Meet and RE-INVEST 2018 Expo will be held at India Expo Mart, Greater Noida, UP.

Dr Harsh Vardhan Inaugurates Air Pollution Control Device WAYU in Delhi

  • Environment Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan has inaugurated air pollution control device Wind Augmentation Purifying Unit (WAYU), at ITO in New Delhi.
  • The device WAYU is developed by Council of Science and Industrial Research to mitigate air pollution at traffic junctions.
  • Along with particulate matter, the device will remove poisonous gases such as volatile organic compounds and carbon monoxide.
  • This device works on two principles:
    • Wind generation for dilution of air pollutants;
    • Active pollutants removal

Naveen Patnaik inaugurates Odisha Bhawan in Tamil Nadu

  • Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik inaugurated the Odisha Bhawan in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. It will serve as a platform for engagement between his State and Tamil Nadu.

Maharashtra, TN, Karnataka Account for 40% of Retail Loans

  • Based on a new report by TransUnion Cibil, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka make up for nearly 40 percent of all retail loans in the country as well as 32 percent of the credit active population as on June 30, 2018. 
  • These three states account for just about a fifth of the overall population of the country, in other words it comprises just 20 percent of the total population.
  • Maharashtra had the highest retail balance of Rs 5.50 lakh crore, which comprised 20 percent of all retail balances in the country, followed by Tamil Nadu with Rs 2.77 lakh crore and Karnataka with Rs 2.74 lakh crore.

Nelson Mandela’s Statue Unveiled At United Nations Headquarters

  • The United Nations has unveiled the statue of Nelson Mandela at its headquarters in New York during the Mandela Peace Summit on September 24.
  • The 1.9 m high statue of former South African President, who died in 2013, has been unveiled at the United Nations to mark 100th birth anniversary of the late South African leader.
  • The U.N. is also declaring 2019-2028 as the “Nelson Mandela Decade of Peace”.

Women’s Ballon d’Or award launched by France Football

  • For the first time ever, France Football has introduced the new award for women named “Women’s Ballon d’Or” to be awarded from the year 2018. The award is another step towards equality for women’s football.
  • Ballon d’Or is awarded every year by France Football magazine since 1956 for the best player of the year and in 2018, the award will be given to both a woman and a man on December 3 in Paris.

Track Asia Cup 2018

  • The 5th edition of the Track Asia Cup was held at Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium Complex Velodrome, New Delhi from September 21-23, 2018. It was organised by the Cycling Federation of India.
  • India won the top spot by bagging 13 medals that includes 6 gold medals, 5 silver and 2 bronze. 
  • The Indonesian team secured the second place with 4 gold, 3 silver and 1 bronze while Hong Kong came third by winning 4 gold and 2 bronze.

Antyodaya Divas Observed Across India on Sept 25

  • September 25 is observed as Antyodaya Diwas every year to mark the birth anniversary of Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya. The day was declared by the Modi Government on September 25, 2014.
  • Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya, born in Mathura in 1916 was one of the key leaders of Bharatiya Jana Sangh from which the BJP later emerged.
  • He was the leader of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh from 1953 to 1968.
