Commerce Min plans to shift LPAI from Home Ministry

  • The government is considering to shift LPAI, engaged in development of land ports at borders, from the Home Ministry to Department of Commerce to coordinate logistics related works and promote trade.
  • The proposal to shift Land Ports Authority of India (LPAI) is mooted by the commerce ministry.
  • LPAI is a statutory body established under Land Ports Authority of India Act, 2010.

2nd Meeting of National Council on India’s Nutrition Challenges under POSHAN Abhiyaan held in New Delhi

  • The Ministry of Women and Child Development organized 2nd meeting of National Council on India’s Nutrition Challenges under POSHAN Abhiyaan on 24th July, 2018 in New Delhi under the Chairmanship of Vice Chairman, NITI Aayog, Rajiv Kumar.
  • During the meeting it was approved to include 32 new districts in the current year 2018-19 under POSHAN Abhiyaan by which it will saturate all the districts of the UTs which are left to be included under Phase-I and Phase-II. 
  • Also the States where up to 5 districts have been left will also be included under POSHAN Abhiyaan. This will facilitate saturation of 8 new States/UTs. Now 23 States/UTs will be saturated.
  • NITI Aayog also announced to observe the month of September, 2018 as National Nutrition Month and further to celebrate it every year.

Odisha CM launches ‘Green Mahanadi Mission’

  • Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik  launched the ‘Green Mahanadi Mission’. It is a plantation drive under which 2 crore saplings will be planted along the Mahanadi river and its tributaries.
  • A massive plantation drive will be undertaken along the Mahanadi, Ib and Tel rivers. Two crore trees will be planted along the rivers in the state.

India Uganda Signs 4 MoUs in Various Fields

  • India and Uganda have signed four Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in various fields during PM Modi’s visit to the African nation.
  • The 4 area of agreements includes:
    • MoU on defence cooperation,
    • MoU on visa exemption for diplomatic and official passport holders,
    • MoU on a cultural exchange programme and
    • MoU on material testing laboratory
  • These MoUs were signed between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni in Kampala.
  • The Indian government has also decided to gift a cancer therapy machine to the Uganda cancer institute in Kampala.
  • India and Uganda have also agreed upon two Lines of Credit worth nearly $200 million in terms of infrastructure, agriculture, energy and dairy.
  • India will also give vehicles and ambulances for military and civilian use to the African country.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced to build a Gandhi Heritage Centre in Uganda’s Jinja, where a statue of Mahatma Gandhi now stands to pay homage to the leader. It is a sacred site where a portion of Mahatma Gandhi’s ashes was immersed.

Ficci CASCADE forms 12-member think tank to fight illicit trade

  • FICCI CASCADE (Committee Against Smuggling and Counterfeiting Activities Destroying the Economy) has constituted a 12 member think tank which will advise and provide necessary inputs in formulating a strong and effective future course of action to eliminate the menace of illicit trade.
  • Ficci CASCADE is the anti-smuggling and anti-counterfeiting arm of FICCI.
  • ex-DIPP secretary Ajay Shankar; former CBI director Anil Sinha; Hem Kumar Pande, former secretary in ministry of consumer affairs, food and public distribution; Justice Manmohan Sarin, former Lokayukta, NCT of Delhi and Najib Shah, ex-chairman, Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs; Ex-Delhi Police Commissioner Neeraj Kumar; former Research and Analysis Wing chief Sanjeev Tripathi; ex-Director General, CRPF Vikram Srivastava, international expert Kameswari Subramanian and Anil Rajput, Chairman, Ficci CASCADE are the members.

Fincare Small Finance Bank partners with Oxigen for Branchless Banking services

  • Oxigen and Fincare Small Finance Bank signed an agreement to roll out the Branchless Banking services, using Oxigen’s flagship Point of Sale device called the Oxigen Micro ATM Super PoS.
  • Fincare Small Finance Bank celebrated its first anniversary and announced its entry into Mumbai.The event was graced by Brand Ambassador Grand Master Viswanathan Anand.

IAF contingent participates in Exercise Pitch Black for first time

  • An Indian Air Force contingent comprising of four frontline Sukhoi30 MKI fighter aircraft participated in Exercise Pitch Black-2018 in Australia, a multinational exercise hosted by Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF).
  • This is the first time the IAF is participating in this exercise that involves over 100 aircraft from around the globe.
