Union Home Minister launches the Student Police Cadet (SPC) programme for nationwide implementation

  • The Union Home Minister Shri Rajnath Singh launched the Student Police Cadet (SPC) programme for nationwide implementation at a ceremony in Gurugram, Haryana on July 21, 2018.
  • The programme seeks to build a bridge between the Police and the larger community through school students by inculcating values and ethics in them through classes in school and outside.
  • The SPC programme focuses on students of Classes 8 & 9 and special care has been taken to ensure that it does not lead to increase in the workload of the students.
  • An amount of Rs.67 crores has been released to the States for implementation of the programme. An amount of Rs.50,000 shall be earmarked for each school to be spent on educational aids, training and contingency.

Govt to use MicroDot technology to check vehicle thefts

  • In a move to put a check on vehicle thefts Government of India is working on technology named MicroDots. 
  • MicroDots involves spraying thousands of small dots laser etched with a vehicle identification number throughout the vehicle body, including their engines. 
  • It is almost impossible to remove the dots and hence, the car’s identity can be established at any stage. 
  • The government’s highest automobile technical standard making body, CMVR-TSC, will finalise the norm in the next one or two months.

Rs 100 crore needed to recalibrate ATMs for new Rs 100 notes: Catmi

  • The ATM operations industry Confederation of ATM Industry (CATMI) said that introduction of a new Rs 100 note would require an investment of Rs 100 crore and 12 months of time to completely recalibrate 

Nepal to Host 4th BIMSTEC Summit in August

  • The 4th BIMSTEC Summit will be held in Kathmandu, Nepal from August 30 – 31, 2018.
  • The main focus of the summit will be to increase connectivity between the BIMSTEC nations including roads, airways and transmission lines.
  • The Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) formed in 1997 is a regional economic bloc comprising of seven member nations of South Asia and Southeast Asia namely Bangladesh, India, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Bhutan, and Nepal. Nepal is the current chair of BIMSTEC.

British Parliament commemorates Indian spiritual leader’s 750th birth anniversary

  • British parliamentarians commemorated the 750th birth anniversary of Vedanta Desika, one of India’s leading spiritual masters.
  • A 13th century spiritual leader of the Sri Vaishnava sect in the post-Ramanuja period, Desika was also a poet and a philosopher.

Dr. Harsh Vardhan inaugurates the most advanced System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting (SAFAR) in Delhi

  • Dr Harsh Vardhan unveiled a state-of-the-art Air Quality and Weather Forecast System– SAFAR (System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting) at Chandni Chowk in Delhi on July 21, 2018.
  • Dr Harsh Vardhan is the Minister of Science & Technology, Earth Sciences; Environment, Forest & Climate Change.
  • In addition to monitoring and forecasting of regular air quality and weather parameters, the Chandni Chowk air quality station will also measure sun’s UV-Index and will provide measurement of online automatic ultrafine particles PM1 and Mercury, both of which have direct relevance to human health.
  • The system, first of its kind in the country, was developed indigenously in record time by Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, Pune and operationalized by India Meteorological Department (IMD).

Facebook to launch own Internet satellite ‘Athena’ in 2019

  • Facebook will launch Athena, its own Internet satellite, early in 2019, as part of its plan to connect billions of people who are still offline.
  • Athena will provide broadband internet connections to rural and under-served areas.

India women win silver medal in Archery World Cup

  • India’s trio of Trisha Deb, Muskan Kirar and Jyothi Surekha fell short by an agonizing one point against France to settle for a silver medal in the women’s compound team final of the Archery World Cup – Stage 4 in Berlin.
