PM Modi Highlights ‘4P’ Mantra for Clean World on Gandhi Jayanti

  • On the occasion of the 149th birth anniversary of Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has given 4 mantra for making the world cleaner.
  • The four mantra’s include:
    1. Political leadership,
    2. Public funding,
    3. Partnerships and
    4. People’s participation
  • The Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM) aims to achieve an Open-Defecation Free (ODF) India by 2 October 2019, the 150th anniversary of the birth of Mahatma Gandhi.

Odisha CM Launches Own Food Security Scheme

  • Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has launched the state’s own food security scheme through video conferencing on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti.
  • The food security programme will cover the poor people ‘left out’ from the National Food Security Act (NFSA).
  • Under the scheme, the beneficiaries will get 5 kg of rice per person, per month at a rate of Rs 1 per kg.
  • The state government will spend Rs 443.5 crore per annum to support the scheme and Rs 221.75 crore in the current financial year.

Naval Exercise IBSAMAR-VI Begins in South Africa

  • The sixth edition of joint Multi – National Maritime Exercise named IBSAMAR between the Indian, Brazilian and South African Navies, is being held at Simons Town, South Africa from 01 – 13 October 2018.
  • The aim of the exercise is to undertake collective training for participating navies, building interoperability and mutual understanding as well as sharing of best practices.
  • The Indian Navy is represented in IBSAMAR VI by Guided Missile Frigate Tarkash, Guided Missile Destroyer Kolkata, Long Range Maritime Patrol Aircraft P8I, Seaking and Chetak helicopters as well as a MARCOS contingent. 

Shimla to Host Sustainable Mountain Development Summit from Oct 3-5

  • The Sustainable Mountain Development Summit VII will be held in Shimla from October 3 to 5.
  • The overall objective of the conclave is to provide a platform for the mountain states to come together to discuss issues related to the themes, and find ways to influence national and state policies on the same
  • The Summit has been organised by Integrated Mountain Initiative in New Delhi in collaboration with the Himachal Pradesh Council for Science, Technology and Environment in Shimla and Shoolini University of Solan

Justice Lokur Nominated as Executive Chairman of NALSA

  • Madan Bhimarao Lokur, senior judge of the Supreme Court, has been nominated as the new Executive Chairman of the National Legal Services Authority of India (NALSA) by President Ramnath Kovind.
  • Justice Lokur will take the charge as NALSA’s Executive Chairman on October 3.
  • He will replace Justice Ranjan Gogoi, who is set to become the head of the apex court.

International Day of Non-Violence: October 2

  • The International Day of Non-Violence is observed on 2 October, the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi. This day is referred to in India as Gandhi Jayanti.
  • On 15 June 2007 the United Nations General Assembly voted to establish 2 October as the International Day of Non-Violence
  • The day aims to “disseminate the message of non-violence, including through education and public awareness.

Veteran Malayalam Film Personality Thampi Kannanthanam Passes Away

  • Veteran Malayalam film personality Thampi Kannanthanam passed away after several days of illness. He was 65.
  • Kannanthanam was a producer, director and have also acted in a few films.

Veteran Violinist Balabhaskar Passes Away

  • Kerala’s renowned musician and violinist Balabhaskar, passed away in Thiruvananthapuram after being critically injured in a car accident last week. He was 40.
