15th Prawasi Bhartiya Diwas To Be Held at Varanasi in Jan 2019

  • The 15th Prawasi Bhartiya Diwas 2019 will be held at Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh in January 2019. The three day event will begin from 21st of January.  
  • The theme of PBD 2019 is the “Role of Indian Diaspora in building a New India”.
  • The event is being hosted by Uttar Pradesh Government in collaboration with the Ministry of External Affairs. 
  • While Pravasi Bhartiya Divas (PBD) has been celebrated on January 9 every year, the date for the 15th Pravasi Bhartiya Divas convention has been moved from January 9 to January 21 – 23 to give an opportunity to those travelling from around the world to attend the Kumbh Mela and Republic Day.

UP is first State to mandate RFID tag for e-Way bill

  • Effective November 1, obtaining Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tag for fulfilling e-Way bill requirements will be mandatory in Uttar Pradesh.
  • Uttar Pradesh has become the first state to notify such a measure.
  • However it must be noted that Maharashtra has completed a pilot project for use of the RFID tag. Maharashtra has generated the highest number of e-Way bills ( EWBs) so far with a count of 3.13 crore.

Maharashtra tops in covering ‘non-loanee’ farmers under PMFBY crop insurance scheme

  • Maharashtra has topped the list of state’s for covering ‘non-loanee’ farmers under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY). Non-loanee farmers are those who do not avail any agricultural loans.
  • Seventy-two per cent of Maharastra’s farmers insured under the Centre’s flagship crop insurance scheme come under the non-loanee segment. The figure, for kharif 2018, is the highest in the country.

Kerala Tourism wins 2 awards at the PATA Gold Awards 2018

  • Two initiatives of Kerala Tourism have won award at the PATA Gold Awards 2018. One is Yalla Kerala Campaign (Travel Advertisement Print Media) another is Live Inspired Campaign (Travel Poster).
  • Out of 30 awards, 2 award has been won by Kerala Govt.

India’s first exclusive dog park comes up in Hyderabad

  • India’s first exclusive and certified ‘Dog Park’ boasting of facilities including a walking track, off leash areas and a clinic will come up in Hyderabad, Telangana. 
  • There will also be a Vet on site apart from dog trainer, protocols for cleaning as per standards and free vaccination will be administered.

India’s First Commercial Underwater Drone EyeROV TUNA Handed Over to DRDO

  • Kochi-based start-up IROV Technologies Pvt Ltd (EyeROV) has launched a commercial underwater drones named EyeROV TUNA, which it claims to be the first indigenously-developed commercial underwater drone in the country.
  • The vehicle was handed over to the Delhi based Naval Physical and Oceanographic Laboratory (NPOL) a laboratory of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) on September 14.
  • The underwater drone can send real-time videos of ships and other underwater structures to help with their repair and maintenance.

Indian Coast Guards Commissions Second Offshore Patrol Vessel Vijaya

  • The second in the series of 98-metre Vikram-class offshore patrol vessels (OPVs), Indian Coast Guard (ICG) Ship Vijaya (34) was commissioned in Chennai by Defence Secretary Sanjay Mitra on September 14.
  • The vessel has been designed and built indigenously by Larsen & Toubro. 
  • The ship, on joining the Coast Guard fleet, will be based at Paradi extensively for Exclusive Economic Zone (EZ) surveillance and other duties.
  • The Vikram-class offshore patrol vessel is a series of seven offshore patrol vessels (OPV) being built at the Kattupalli shipyard by L&T Shipbuilding for the Indian Coast Guard. 

S B Mathur appointed Chairman of Infrastructure Leasing & Financial Services (IL&FS)

  • S B Mathur will be the new Chairman of Infrastructure Leasing & Financial Services (IL&FS). He is the former chairman of Life Insurance Corporation (LIC).
  • He will replace Hemant Bhargava, LIC’s managing director, who was also serving as non-executive chairman at IL&FS since July.
  • LIC is the largest shareholder in IL&FS, the group holding entity, with a 25.34 per cent stake as on March 31, 2018.

Mary Kom wins Gold at Silesian Open

  • Indian boxer Mary Kom (48 Kg) won a Gold Medal at the 13th Silesian Open Boxing Tournament for women in Gliwice, Poland. 
  • Manisha (54kg) settled for a silver while L Sarita Devi (60kg) ended with a bronze. 
  • Jyoti Gulia (51kg) picked up the country’s lone gold in the youth category 

Kenyan Eliud Kipchoge set a new marathon world record

  • Eliud Kipchoge of Kenya has set a marathon world record in Berlin as he completed it in 2hr 1min 39sec.
  • He took 1min 18sec less than the previous best set four years ago by Dennis Kimetto.

Spain’s Marin wins Japan Open badminton title

  • Spain’s Carolina Marin defeated Japanese player Nozomi Okuhara 21-19, 17-21, 21-11 to win the Japan Open women’s singles title.
  • The Japan Open men’s title was claimed by Japanese reigning world champion Kento Momota.

Maldives Beats India to Clinch 2018 SAFF Suzuki Cup

  • India lost to Maldives to clinch the 2018 South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) Suzuki Cup title as it suffered a 1-2 defeat in the summit clash in Dhaka, Bangladesh.
  • This is the second win for Maldives who had also won the title in 2008 edition.
