PM Launches Projects Worth Over Rs 900 Crore in Varanasi

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi was on his two-day visit to Varanasi, Azamgarh and Mirzapur districts of Uttar Pradesh from July 14-15, 2018 to dedicate and lay the foundation of various development projects.
  • In his Lok Sabha constituency Varanasi, PM Modi launched a series of projects worth a total of Rs 937 crore, besides, he also approved more than 200 projects worth Rs 21,000 cr for Ganga rejuvenation.
  • He flagged off the Varanasi-Ballia EMU train, laid the foundation stone for the Panchkoshi Parikrama Marg, and several projects under the Smart City Mission and Namaami Gange as well as the Varanasi City Gas Distribution Project. The Prime Minister also laid the foundation stone for an International Convention Centre in Varanasi.
  • In Azamgarh, the Prime Minister laid the foundation stone of 340 kms-long Poorvanchal Expressway that will connect Lucknow with various important towns of Eastern Uttar Pradesh including Barabanki, Amethi, Sultanpur, Faizabad, Ambedkar Nagar, Azamgarh, Mau and Ghazipur. It will also connect Delhi via expressway to several major towns and cities situated in the state such as Noida.

PM dedicates Bansagar Canal Project to the Nation

  • Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi dedicated the Bansagar Canal Project to the Nation in Mirzapur.
  • The project worth over Rs. 3500 crore will provide a big boost to irrigation in the region especially for the farmers of Mirzapur and Allahabad districts of Uttar Pradesh.
  • Shri Narendra Modi also laid the Foundation Stone of the Mirzapur Medical College, inaugurated 100 Jan Aushadhi Kendras in the State and dedicated a bridge over the River Ganga at Balughat, Chunar to facilitate connectivity between Mirzapur and Varanasi.

MCA Constitutes 10 Member Committee to review Companies Act 2013

  • The Ministry of Corporate Affairs has constituted a 10 Member Committee headed by the Corporate Affairs Secretary to review the Companies Act 2013.
  • This Panel is expected to examine ‘de-criminalisation’ of certain offences of the act which will then be handled in an in-house mechanism where a penalty could be levied in instances of default..
  • This would also allow the trial courts to pay more attention on offences of serious nature.

‘Paudhagiri’ campaign launched in Haryana

  • Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar launched the ‘Paudhagiri’ campaign, aimed at increasing the green cover in the state.
  • Under this campaign, 22 lakh students from class 6 to 12 of all government and private schools in Haryana will plant a sapling each during three months of monsoon – July, August and September.
  • The student is required to upload his selfie with his or her plant on the App and he or she will be given an incentive of Rs 50 in every six months from the government. Thus, the student will get Rs 300 in the next three years for looking after a sapling planted by him or her.

Ravi Shankar Prasad Unveils Goa IT Policy 2018

  • The Goa IT Policy 2018 was unveiled by the Union Minister for Electronics & IT and Law and Justice Ravi Shankar Prasad on the final day of Goa IT Day celebrations on July 15 at the Inox complex in Panaji.
  • The policy aims at “reverse migration” of manpower in Goa and on generation of about 10,000 job opportunities at different levels during the next five years for the growth and development of Goa as well as its human capital.

India Becomes Vice Chair of Asia Pacific Region of WCO for 2 years

  • India has become the Vice-Chair (Regional Head) of the Asia Pacific Region of  World Customs Organisation (WCO) for a period of two years, from July, 2018 to June, 2020. 
  •  The position will enable India to take on leadership role of Asia Pacific Region of the organisation.
  • The WCO has divided its Membership into six Regions. Each of the six Regions is represented by a regionally elected Vice-Chairperson to the WCO Council.

Sushma Swaraj Co-Chairs 2nd Joint Commission Meeting in Manama with Counterpart

  • External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj was on a two-day visit to Manama in Bahrain.
  • The minister co-chaired the 2nd India-Bahrain High Joint Commission meeting in Manama along with her counterpart Shaikh Khalid bin Ahmed Al Khalifa.
  • The first meeting of the High Joint Commission was held in New Delhi in February 2015.
  • This is EAM’s 3rd visit to Bahrain in her capacity as External Affairs Minister.

Jack Guy Lafontant Steps Down as PM of Haiti

  • Haiti’s Prime Minister, Jack Guy Lafontant, has announced his resignation following days of violent protests sparked by a now-abandoned plan to raise fuel prices.
  • The unrest started after the government unveiled a proposal to eliminate fuel subsidies which in turn would have hiked fuel prices.
  • The announcement sparked mass protests, with streets in the capital, Port-au-Prince, and other cities blocked with barricades of debris and burning tires.

Novak Djokovic beats Kevin Anderson to win fourth Wimbledon title

  • Novak Djokovic has won the 2018 Wimbledon title after he beat Kevin Anderson in the men’s singles final. This was his his fourth Wimbledon title and 13th grand slam title.

Japan’s Okuhara Defeats PV Sindhu in Thailand Open Final

  • Olympic silver medallist P V Sindhu suffered a straight-game defeat against Japan’s Nozomi Okuhara in the summit clash of Thailand Open World Tour Super 500 badminton tournament at the Nimibutr Stadium in Bangkok.
  • Second seed Sindhu lost the match 15-21, 18-21 against the fourth seeded Okuhara in exactly 50 minutes of the USD 350,000 tournament.
  • It was Sindhu’s third disappointment in a final this year following her defeats in the summit clash of the India Open and Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.

15 July : World Youth Skills Day

  • 15 July was observed as World Youth Skills Day across the World. The aim of World Youth Skills Day is to encourage youth to celebrate the value of acquiring skills like building, making, and creating as a way to achieve personal success and fulfillment.
  • To raise awareness on the importance of investing in youth skills development, the United Nations General Assembly decided to designate 15 July as World Youth Skills Day.
