President nominates 4 Rajya Sabha members

  • President Ram Nath Kovind has announced four nominations to the Rajya Sabha. The details of them are given below:

Ram Shakal farmer leader and former MP Ram Shakal is an eminent people’s leader and a public representative from Uttar Pradesh who has devoted his life for the welfare and well-being of the Dalit community.
Raghunath Mohapatra sculptor Raghunath Mohapatra is an internationally renowned authority on stone carving. Practising since 1959, he has trained over 2000 students.
Sonal Mansingh classical dancer Sonal Mansingh is among India’s foremost exponents of Indian classical dance. She has been performing Bharatnatyam and Odissi for over six decades.
Rakesh Sinha RSS ideologue Rakesh Sinha is the founder and Honorary Director of the Delhi-based think-tank, India Policy Foundation. Sinha, a Professor of Motilal Nehru College of Delhi University, is also a member of the Indian Council of Social Science Research.
  • Four seats got vacated after the retirement of cricketer Sachin Tendulkar, actress Rekha, social activist Anu Aga and lawyer K. Parasaran.
  • Article 80(1)(a) read with Article 80(3) of the Constitution of India provides that the President can nominate to Rajya Sabha, 12 persons having special knowledge, or practical experience in respect of literature, science, art and social service. There were, currently, eight nominated members in the Rajya Sabha, and hence, four vacancies.

Haryana tops in GST collection

  • As announced by Haryana Finance Minister Capt Abhimanyu, Haryana has topped the states in per capita revenue collection under the Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime.
  • The state has become the 4th highest generator of e-way bills in the country, widened the tax base by 82.22 per cent, and logged 19 per cent hike in revenue collections.

India unveils world’s largest visa centre in Bangladesh

  • Indian Home Minister Rajnath Singh on July 14, 2018 inaugurated here the world’s largest state-of-the-art visa centre at Dhaka, Bangladesh. The centre is equipped with a range of modern facilities and, promising shorter waiting times for applicants.
  • India has 12 visa centres in Bangladesh, the highest number it has in any country.

India’s ICZM Project wins World Bank’s internal award

  • Union Environment secretary C K Mishra announced that, India’s Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) project has won World Bank’s internal award for exceptional performance in achieving many development goals.
  • ICZM project is among the eight projects awarded, selected out of 42 final nominations received from the World Bank Task Teams in the South Asian Countries.

Allotment of shares to FPIs in IPOs need to be verified with PAN: SEBI

  • SEBI has announced that allotment of shares to foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) in initial public offers would need to be verified with PANs to check against any breach of investment limit through multiple entities.
  • Under the rules, purchase of equity shares of each company by a single FPI or an investor group would have to be below 10 per cent of the total issued capital of the company.
  • In April, Sebi had said two or more foreign government entities and its related parties from the same jurisdiction will be considered a single FPI for the investment cap of 10 per cent in a listed Indian company.
  • In case the same set of beneficial owner invest through multiple entities, such entities will be treated as part of same investor group and their investment limits will be clubbed as single foreign portfolio investor (FPI).

Angelique Kerber defeats Williams to win first Wimbledon title

  • German Tennis player Angelique Kerber defeated Serena Williams in the finals to win the Wimbledon ladies’ singles champions. This is her first Wimbledon title and third grand slam.
  • Serena Williams has won the title 7 times.
