PM Modi inaugurates projects worth Rs 2,413 crore in Varanasi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated to the nation several projects costing Rs 2413 crore.

Highlights:

  • Inland Multi-Modal Terminal Port constructed at the cost of 207 crore rupees on river Ganga at Ramnagar. This is the first of the four Multi-Modal Terminals being constructed on National Waterways-I on River Ganga as part of the World Bank-aided Jal Marg Vikas project of the Inland Waterways Authority of India. (Rs 5,369.18 crore). The project aims to develop the stretch of the river Ganga between Varanasi and Haldia for the navigation of large vessels. The other three terminals are under construction at Sahibganj, Haldia and Gazipur. 
  • Two Highways– Total length of the two highways is 34 kilometre and they have been constructed at a cost of over 1,500 crore rupees.
  • 16 kilometre Varanasi Ring Road Phase-I has been completed at a cost of over 750 crores, while the 17-kilometre Babatpur-Varanasi road was constructed at a cost of over 800 crore rupees. 

First ‘Water Handloom Hut’ of North East inaugurated in Manipur

  • The first ‘floating water handloom huts’ of the North-East were inaugurated at Loktak Lake in Bishnupur district of Manipur.
  • The five handloom huts were inaugurated by Tripura’s Forest and Tribal Welfare Minister, Mevar Kumar Jamatia.

ADB to grant $13 to EESL to set up an energy efficiency revolving fund (EERF)

  • The Asian Development Bank (ADB) would grant $13 million to Energy Efficiency Services Ltd (EESL) to set up an energy efficiency revolving fund (EERF).
  • EESL and ADB signed an agreement for a Global Environment Facility (GEF) grant of USD 13 million to establish an Energy Efficiency Revolving Fund
  • The fund aims to expand and sustain investments in the energy efficiency market in India, build market diversification, and scale up existing technologies.

33rd ASEAN Summit Begins in Singapore

  • The 33rd edition of the ASEAN Summit began in Singapore and will continue till Nov 15, 2018. Prime Minister of Singapore Lee Hsien Loong is the Chairman of the Summit. 
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to attend the East Asia Summit and Associated meetings of ASEAN on 14th and 15th November in Singapore. He will address the audience during the Fintech Conference
  • The theme of Singapore’s Chairmanship is “Resilient and Innovative”.

Indian Navy – Indonesian Navy Bilateral Exercise ‘Samudra Shakti 2018’ to be held in Indonesia

  • The first edition of Indian Navy – Indonesian Navy Bilateral Exercise ‘Samudra Shakti’ is scheduled from 12  to 18 Nov 18.
  • INS Rana of the Eastern Fleet based at Visakhapatnam will participate in this exercise from India and has reached port of Surabaya (Port of Tanjung Perak) in Indonesia.

Lewis Hamilton wins Brazil Grand Prix

  • Britain’s  Formula 1 champion Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) has won the Brazilian Grand Prix, the penultimate race of the 2018 F1 season.
  • Second – Holland’s Max Verstappen (Red Bull) ; Third- Finland’s Kimi Raikkonen (Ferrari)

10th edition of the AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships to be held in New Delhi

  • New Delhi, India will host the 10th edition of the AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships. This is the first time that New Delhi will host the World Championships since 2006.
  • Nine new nations from four Confederations will make their debut in this event. The event will be held at Indira Gandhi Stadium.

Sir William Mark Tully and Jayanta Mahapatra wins Tata Literature Awards

  • Tata Literature Live! Lifetime Achievement Award for 2018: Sir William Mark Tully (Veteran journalist, writer and former BBC India correspondent)
  • Tata Steel Literature Live! Poet Laureate for 2018Jayanta Mahapatra (Renowned poet)
  • Both these awards recognise and salute sustained and outstanding contribution to writing and literature in India. 

Shashi Deshpande’s autobiography “Listen To Me” released

  • The autobiography of one of the most celebrated authors of India, Deshpande titled “Listen To Me” has been released.
  • Shashi Deshpande  is an award-winning Indian novelist. Shashi Deshpande’s first book was The Legacy, a collection of short stories and her first novel was ‘The Dark Holds No Terror’

Union minister HN Ananth Kumar passed away at 59.

  • Karnataka’s iconic leader and Union Minister HN Ananth Kumar passed away in Bengaluru at the age of 59. He was undergoing treatment for cancer.
  • He was the Union Minister for Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers and Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs. He was the MP from Bangalore South, Karnataka. He was affiliated to BJP.

Noted economist T N Srinivasan passed away

  • Renowned economist T N Srinivasan, known for his contribution to developmental economics, died following a brief illness at 85.
  • A distinguished economist, Srinivasan who had received Doctorate from Yale University was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 2007.

Noted linguist Pramod Bhattacharya passed away

  • Eminent linguist, folklorist and academician Dr Pramod Bhattacharya passed away at 94.
  • He was from Assam.
