12 Indian Companies Feature in Forbes 2018 Global 2000 list

  • The 16th annual Forbes Global 2000 list includes publicly-traded companies from 60 countries. 
  • 12 Indian companies have find place in the 2018 list of the world’s best regarded firms compiled by Forbes.
  • The list has been topped by entertainment giant Walt Disney with a market cap of $165 billion, followed by hospitality major Hilton at 2nd and Italian carmaker Ferrari at third spot.
  • List of Indian Companies includes:

    2. Tata Consultancy Services (35),
    3. Tata Motors (70),
    4. Tata Steel (131),
    5. Larsen & Toubro (135),

IMF, WB and WTO Unveils Report That Seek to Remove Service Trade Barrier

  • The World Bank Group, International Monetary Fund, and the World Trade Organization has jointly launched a report titled “Reinvigorating Trade and Inclusive Growth” to reinforce the importance of trade in the global economy. 
  • The publication emphasizes that trade policies should aim to build greater, more durable openness and encourage countries to reinvest in open, rules-based global trade. 
  • The joint report between the IMF, the World Bank and the WTO identifies areas where trade has the potential of contributing particularly strongly to productivity growth and economic growth overall.

Asian Development Bank (ADB) and India Sign $150 Million Loan to Improve Regional Connectivity

  • The Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Government of India has signed $150 million loan to finance continued improvements to road connectivity and efficiency of the international trade corridor in northern part of West Bengal and northeastern region of India.
  • The loan is tranche 2 of the agreement for the $500 million South Asia Subregional Economic Cooperation (SASEC) Road Connectivity Investment Program.
  • The new loan will help upgradation of key national and state highways in Manipur and construct an important international bridge for crucial last-mile connectivity between in-country trunk road network and neighboring countries.

US, Philippines, Japan Army Begins Exercise “Kamandag 2”

  • The armed forces of the US, Philippines and Japan started the “Kamandag 2” military exercises on October at Subic Bay on the west coast of the Philippines’ Luzon island in the heavily contested South China Sea.
  • The second edition of the military exchanges will continue till October 10 and will focus on counter-terrorism alongside humanitarian assistance and disaster relief capabilities.

N. Ravi Elected Chairman of Press Trust of India

  • N. Ravi, Publisher and former Editor-in-Chief of The Hindu, has been unanimously elected Chairman of the Press Trust of India (PTI).
  • Mr. Ravi, 70, succeeds Viveck Goenka, Chairman and Managing Director of the Express Group.
  • Vijay Kumar Chopra, Chief Editor of the Punjab Kesari Group of newspapers, was elected Vice-Chairman.

Mohd Mushtaque Ahmad Is New Hockey India President

  • Mohd Mushtaque Ahmad has been unanimously elected as the new President of Hockey India (HI).
  • Ahmad, who formerly held the post of Secretary General, takes over from outgoing President Rajinder Singh.

Bollywood’s ‘First Lady’ Krishna Raj Kapoor Passes Away

  • Krishna Raj Kapoor, the widow of the legendary Bollywood actor-filmmaker Raj Kapoor, passed away at the age of 87 due to cardiac arrest.
  • She was lovingly called the first woman of Bollywood by fans.

International Translation Day: September 30

  • International Translation Day is celebrated every year on 30 September.
  • The theme for ITD 2018 Translation: promoting cultural heritage in changing times.
  • ITD 2018 highlights the role of translation in promoting an understanding of the intangible cultural heritage of others in order to encourage mutual respect in our changing world.

World Habitat Day 2018: October 1

  • World Habitat Day is observed every year on the first Monday of October throughout the world to remind the world of its collective responsibility for the habitat of future generations.
  • It was officially designated by the United Nations and first celebrated in 1986.
  • The theme for 2018 World Habitat Day is Municipal Solid Waste Management

International Day of Older Persons: October 1

  • The International Day of Older Persons is observed on October 1 each year since 1991.
  • The United Nations General Assembly voted to establish October 1 as the International Day of Older Persons on December 14, 1990.
  • The day aims at raising awareness about issues affecting the elderly, such as senescence and elder abuse and contributions that older people make to society.
  • The theme this year is, ‘Celebrating Older Human Rights champions’.
