19th World Congress of Food Science and Technology to be held in India

  • 19th World Congress of Food Science and Technology (19th IUFoST World Congress) will be held in Mumbai, India from October 23-27, 2018.
  • The event is organised by International Union of Food Science and Technology (IUFoST) in association with Indian National Science Academy (INSA). 
  • Theme: “25 Billion Meals a Day by 2025 with Healthy, Nutritious, Safe and Diverse Foods”.
  • Headquarters of IUFoST: Toronto, Canada.

Niti Aayog to hold India’s first ‘Global Mobility Summit’ in New Delhi

  • Niti Aayog will organise ‘MOVE: Global Mobility Summit’ on September 7-8 in New Delhi. It will be inaugurated by PM Narendra Modi.
  • The six tracks or themes for the Summit will focus on:  Asset Utilization and Services; Comprehensive Electrification ; Alternative Energy; Reinventing Public Transit;  Logistics and Goods Transport; Data Analytics and Mobility.
  • MOVE Summit aims to bring together and engage with key stakeholders within the rapidly transforming global mobility landscape and to evolve a public interest framework for a shared, connected, zero emission and inclusive mobility agenda for the future. The Summit will constitute three designated components – The Conclave, the Expo and the Featured Events.
  • ‘MOVEMENTUM’, the Expo will feature exciting future technologies and cutting edge innovations which will shape the mobility paradigm, showcasing India’s push towards transformative mobility solutions.

Sebi raises overseas investment limit of AIFs, VCFs to $750 million

  • Markets regulator SEBI has increased the overseas investment limit of alternative investment funds (AIFs) and venture capital funds(VCFs) to USD 750 million from the current USD 500 million. 
  • In order to monitor the utilisation of overseas investment limits, Sebi has asked AIFs and VCFs to mandatorily disclose the utilisation of the such limits within 5 working days of such usage on the regulator’s intermediary portal. 
  • In case an alternative investment fund (AIF) or venture capital fund (VCF) has not utilised the overseas limit granted them within 6 months from Sebi’s approval, the same will have to be reported within 2 working days after expiry of the validity period. 
  • AIFs are funds established or incorporated in India for the purpose of pooling in capital from Indian and foreign investors for investing as per a pre-decided policy, while VCFs are investment funds that manage the money of investors who seek private equity stakes in startups. 

EC launches ‘cVIGIL’ app for voters to report poll code violations

  • The Election Commission launched an Android-based app named ‘cVIGIL’ using which a person can secretly send to it geo-tagged videos and photos of illegal money being distributed or a hate speech being made during polls.
  •  ‘cVIGIL’, stands for “citizens’ vigil”.
  • The app will work only during the time the model code of conduct (MCC) is in place in a poll-bound state.

5Paisa.com launches free online school for financial literacy

  • 5Paisa.com, India’s only e-commerce player in financial products space, has launched the country’s largest free online school on investment.
  • The new initiative – 5P School – is available both on its website 5Paisa.com and 5Paisa Mobile App.

Marwar Rajmata Krishna Kumari passes away

  • Rajmata of the erstwhile Marwar principality and former MP, Krishna Kumari, passed away at 92.

NSE inks pact with Nasdaq for offering real-time clearing, settlements

  • The National Stock Exchange of India (NSE) has entered into an agreement with US bourse Nasdaq, to bring the latter’s clearing, risk management and settlement technologies in India.
  • The new post-trade technology will replace NSE’s current clearing and settlement system National Securities Clearing Corporation Limited (NSCCL). NSCCL is a wholly owned subsidiary of the NSE.

Journalist Rajat Sharma is new DDCA president

  • Senior journalist Rajat Sharma beat World Cup winning Indian cricketer Madan Lal by 517 votes to become the new president of Delhi and Districts Cricket Association (DDCA).

UN declares Colombia’s Chiribiquete park world heritage site

  • The United Nations has placed Colombia’s Chiribiquete national park on its list of world heritage sites.
  • Chiribiquete National Natural Park is the largest national park in Colombia and the largest tropical rainforest national park in the world.

ICC introduces stricter sanctions for ball-tampering

  • The world cricket governing body, International Cricket Council ( ICC) has introduced stricter sanctions for ball-tampering. It upgraded ball-tampering from a level 2 to a level 3 offence.
  • Tampering with the ball could now lead to a ban of up to six Tests or 12 ODIs. 

IOA announces 524-member contingent for Asian Games 2018

  • The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has announced the 524-member contingent for the upcoming 18th Asian Games to be held in  Jakarta and Palembang, Indonesia. (18 Aug 2018 – 2 Sep 2018)
  • The contingent features 277 men and 247 women athletes from a total of 36 sports disciplines.
  • Athletics will have the highest number of representation with a total of 52 members participating.

Max Verstappen wins Austrian F1 GP

  • Red Bull’s Max Verstappen won the Austrian GP after Mercedes suffered a day of double disaster following car failures for Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas.

Himachal Pradesh gets award for best performance under PMSMA

  • Himachal Pradesh has been adjudged first for its performance under Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Matritav Abhiyan (PMSMA) in the country.
  • Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda conferred the Award upon the State which was received by Additional Chief Secretary, Health B. K. Agarwal to the Government of Himachal Pradesh in the PMSMA ‘IPledgefor9’ACHIEVERS Awards Ceremony held at New Delhi.
  • B. K. Agarwal informed that the Government of India has conferred the award upon the State for bringing maximum number of women for Antenatal check-up to the PMSMA clinics.

Major General VD Dogra First Army Officer in World to Complete Ironman Triathlon

  • Major General VD Dogra has become the first Army Officer from the Indian Army and also the only General across the globe to complete a full Ironman Triathalon Competition held at Klagenfurt in Austria.
  • Maj Gen Dogra completed the event in 14 hours and 21 minutes.
  • The Ironman is an international triathlon consisting of three consecutive events 3.8 kms swimming, 180 kms cycling, 42.2 kms of running (a full marathon).
  • Under this competition, the participants are required to complete the events in sequence within 17 hours to earn the title of ‘Ironman’.

Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador wins Mexico Presidential Election

  • Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has won Mexico’s presidential election with around 53 percent of the vote. He is Mexico’s first leftist president in decades.
  • The 64-year-old former mayor of Mexico City, also known as AMLO, will replace President Enrique Pena Nieto.
  • He will take office on December 1.

5th RCEP intersessional ministerial meeting held in Tokyo, Japan

  • The Fifth Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) Intersessional Ministerial Meeting was held in Tokyo, Japan.
  • Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) is a proposed free trade agreement (FTA) between the ten member states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) (Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam) and the six states with which ASEAN has existing free trade agreements (Australia, China, India, Japan, South Korea and New Zealand).
