National

National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi organises Spring Fiesta 2023 to celebrate 69 years of Museum

  • The National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi has organised a first of its kind “Spring Fiesta” 2023, to celebrate 69 years of the museum.
  • The fiesta will feature more than 50 stalls for display and sales by enthusiastic participants from different walks of life who specialise in items such as handicrafts, ceramics, indigenous art, fashion, and so on.
  • The National Gallery of Modern Art is the premier art gallery under Ministry of Culture, Government of India.
  • The main museum is located at Jaipur House in New Delhi, and is one of the world’s largest modern art museums.
  • The National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi was inaugurated on 29 March 1954, by the then Vice President Dr. S Radhakrishnan.

Dept. of Telecom organises First International Quantum Communication Conclave in New Delhi

  • The ‘First International Quantum Communication Conclave’ was organised by the Department of Telecommunications, under Ministry of Communications on 27-28 March 2023 at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi.
  • The conclave was inaugurated by Union Minister of Communications, Electronics & Information Technology and Railways, Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw and Minister of State for Communications Shri Devusinh Chauhan.
  • The International Quantum Communication Conclave was jointly organised by the CDOT, Telecommunications Standards Development Society India (TSDSI) and IEEE Communications Society – Delhi Chapter.
  • Basic objective – opportunity to learn about the latest advancements in quantum communication technologies by experts from industries, academia, R&D centres, and government for building a secure communication infrastructure.
  • As a part of this programme, the Ministers presented the Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya Telecom Skill Excellence Awards – 2022 to various winners.
  • This award has been instituted by Department of Telecommunications to encourage telecom ecosystem for their outstanding contributions in the areas of telecom skilling, services, manufacturing, applications.

Ministry of External Affairs orgainses seminar on ‘Seven Decades of the Constitution of India’

  • The Union Minister of State for External Affairs, Meenakshi Lekhi, inaugurated the seminar on ‘Seven Decades of the Constitution of India’ on March 28, 2023.
  • The Seminar was organised by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) in context of India’s Presidency of the Asian-African Legal Consultative Organisation (AALCO).
  • It was organised in collaboration with the Parliamentary Research and Training Institute for Democracies (PRIDE) at the Parliament Library Building,
  • The seminar focused on three main themes:
    1. Seven decades of the Indian Constitution
    2. Indian Constitution and Human Rights
    3. Indian Constitution and Internationalism

West Bengal CM Banerjee launches flagship road ‘Pathashree-Rastashree’ project

  • West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee inaugurated the flagship project named ‘Pathashree-Rastashree’ in Singur on March 28, 2023.
  • ‘Pathashree-Rastashree’ project aims to strengthen road infrastructure and enhance connectivity to villages.
  • Under this project 12,000 km of roads will be constructed in 22 districts of the state, using state government’s fund.

Cheetah Sasha, relocated From Namibia to MP’s Kuno National Park, passes away

  • The Cheetah named Sasha, who was part of the first batch of cheetahs flown Namibia into Madhya Pradesh’s Kuno National Park (KNP), on September 17, 2022, has passed away.
  • Sasha passed away after developing a kidney infection in January 2023. 
  • She was one of five female cheetahs among 8 cheetahs, flown in from Namibia.

Centre announces committee headed by finance secretary TV Somanathan to explore ways to guarantee pension similar to OPS

  • The Centre has proposed to set up a committee headed by finance secretary TV Somanathan to look into the issue of pensions, and evolve an approach, which addresses the needs of all stakeholders’ concerns.
  • Centre received representations that the National Pension System (NPS) for government employees needs to be improved and demand for the old pension system (OPS) with assured benefits are growing.
  • The committee shall therefore explore ways to come out with a middle path between the fiscally-imprudent OPS and the reform-oriented NPS to protect the common citizens’ interest.
  • The approach will be designed for adoption by both the central government and state governments.

EPFO hikes interest rate on PF deposits to 8.15% for FY23

  • The Central Board of Trustees (CBT) of the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has raised the interest rate on the provident fund (PF) deposits marginally to 8.15 percent for FY23.
  • This was 8.1 percent in the previous financial year, FY22.
  • The 8.15 percent rate of return for 2022-23 (FY23) is the second-lowest since 1977-78.

UCO Bank celebrates completion of 80 years of inception

  • Kolkata-based UCO Bank marked the celebration of completion of 80 years of the bank on March 28, 2023.
  • The President of India, Smt Droupadi Murmu graced the celebration virtually and inaugurated 50 new branches of UCO Bank.
  • President Murmu also laid foundation stone for renovation of Sri Aurobindo Integral Education and Research Centre at Rairangpur, Odisha under CSR initiative of UCO Bank.

Former Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff replaces Marcos Prado Troyjo as new President of BRICS Bank

  • The Board of BRICS New Development Bank (NDB) has elected former Brazilian President Dilma Vana Rousseff as the new President of the Bank with effect from March 24, 2023.
  • She replaces Marcos Prado Troyjo, who held the post since 27 May 2020.

UBS rehires Sergio Ermotti as Group CEO

  • UBS Group AG (UBSG.S) has appointed Sergio Ermotti as new group CEO , following the acquisition of Credit Suisse (CSGN.S) by UBS.
  • Sergio Ermotti will take up on the new role with effect from April 05, 2023.
  • He will replace Ralph Hamers, who was appointed as the on 1 November in 2020.
  • It is for the second time that Ermotti has been roped in as the Group CEO of UBS.
  • Earlier, he was the Group Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of UBS Group AG from November 2011 to October 2020.
  • UBS Group AG is co-headquartered in the cities of Zurich and Base.

  • India’s top men’s doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty beat China’s unseeded Ren Xiang Yu and Tan Qiang in the final of the Swiss Open 2023, in Basel on March 26, 2023
  • The 2023 Swiss Open is a Super 300 badminton tournament of the BWF World Tour 2023.

German Footballer Mesut Ozil announces retirement

  • Former Germany midfielder Mesut Ozil, who won the World Cup in 2014, has announced to retire from soccer due to injuries.
  • He was a member of Germany’s World Cup-winning side in Brazil 2014.
  • The 34 year old former Real Madrid and Arsenal professional football player had been associated with the game for almost 17 years.
  • He had also been part of Turkish club Istanbul Basaksehir and Turkish club Fenerbahce.
