Central Government declares coronavirus as ‘notified disaster’

  • The Ministry of Home Affairs has decided to treat Covid-19 as a “notified disaster”.
  • This will enable the states to spend a larger chunk of funds from the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) to fight the pandemic virus.
  • The step has been taken for the purpose of providing assistance under the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) and has announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 4 lakhs to families of those who die of Coronavirus.
  • Earlier this week, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has declared coronavirus a pandemic and Europe as its epicentre.

UP Government Launches three Schemes for skill development & employment generation for youths

  • Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has launched three ambitious schemes on 12 March for skill development and employment generation for youths in the state.
  • The three schemes are Kaushal Satrang scheme, Chief Minister Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme (CMAPS) and the Yuva Udyamita Vikas Abhiyan (YUVA).
  • The state government has also announced to depute ”Arogya Mitras” at all primary health centres to inform people about government health schemes.

UP Kuashal Satrang Yojana 2020 

  • Kaushal Satrang scheme is a skill development scheme with 7 components to help provide job opportunities to the youth.
  • Under this scheme, each district will organize Mega job fair.

Yuva Udyamita Vikas Abhiyan (YUVA Hub Yojana)

  • Yuva Hubs scheme will facilitate startups to create jobs. Yuva Hubs will be set up in each districts of the state to make youths self dependent by providing them appropriate training programmes, so that they would be able to get suitable jobs as per their qualification.
  • An amount of Rs. 50 crore is proposed to setup YUVA Hub in every district.
  • Overall amount of Rs. 1,200 crore has been allocated to the scheme in the UP budget 2020-21.

CM Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme (CMAPS)

  • This is a UP Govt. Internship Scheme to impart on-job training to youths of state.
  • In this scheme, jobless people will not only get training but will also get Rs. 2500 per month as stipend.
  • A provision of Rs. 100 crore has been allocated to the theme
  • All the unemployed candidates will get this training in MSME units and government will link them with employment of definite period.

Department of Posts Launches India’s First Digital Parcel Locker Service in Kolkata

  • In a first of its kind initiative, the Department of Posts has introduced a free digital parcel locker service in the state of West Bengal.
  • The digital parcel locker service has been launched, keeping in mind working people, who cannot receive parcels because they have no one at home to receive consignments during office hours.
  • The facility will be available in two post offices in Kolkata, namely the Nabadiganta IT Post Office in Sector 5 of Salt Lake City and another in New Town.

How will the digital parcel locker service work??

  • Customers will be given a specific locker number as the address where India Post will drop the parcel.
  • Consignments will be dropped into the digital parcel locker and an SMS will be issued along with an OTP number to the customer concerned.
  • The consignment will remain accessible to customers for seven days during which they can collect the parcel any time of the day.
  • It will enable customers to collect their consignment from specified post offices at their convenience, however, it will be limited to consignments received through registered post or speed post.

RBI reduces Limits on exposure to group of borrowers for UCB to 25%

  • The Reserve Bank of India has reduced the prudential exposure limits for Primary (Urban) Co-operative Banks (UCBs) for group of connected borrowers/parties from 40% to 25%.
  • Primary (Urban) Co-operative Banks (UCBs) were permitted to have exposures up to 15 per cent and 40 per cent of their capital funds to a single borrower and a group of borrowers, respectively.
  • On a review, RBI has mandated that, henceforth, the prudential exposure limits for UCBs for a single borrower/party and a group of connected borrowers/parties shall be 15 per cent and 25 per cent, respectively, of their tier-I capital.

Govt appoints new board of directors for Yes Bank; Sunil Mehta to be Non-Executive Chairman and Prashant Kumar to be MD & CEO

  • The government of India has notified the reconstruction scheme for Yes Bank which has been placed under moratorium by Reserve Bank of India. The moratorium will be lifted on March 18.
  • Under the scheme, Prashant Kumar has been appointed as MD and CEO of Yes Bank. He is a former chief financial officer at State Bank of India.
  • Sunil Mehta has been appointed as the non-executive chairman of Yes Bank. He is the former non-executive chairman of state-owned Punjab National Bank.
  • Mahesh Krishnamurthy and Atul Bheda will be the non-executive directors.
  • Under the reconstruction scheme, SBI, will hold up to 49 per cent in Yes Bank. SBI has approved an investment of Rs 7,250 crore (725 crore shares at Rs 10 each).
  • Apart from this, 4 private banks will also chip in money in Yes Bank. These are- HDFC- Rs 1,000 Crore; ICICI Bank- Rs 1,000 Crore; Axis Bank- Rs 600 Crore; Kotak Mahindra Bank- Rs 500 Crore.

Bill Gates Steps Down the Board of Microsoft and Berkshire Hathaway

  • Microsoft co-founder and former CEO, Bill Gates has said that he is stepping down from the board of the company, after serving on the board for 44 years.
  • The 65 year-old Gates is also stepping down from the board of Berkshire Hathaway, the conglomerate led by Warren Buffett. .
  • Mr Gates said that he wants to spend more time on philanthropic activities, including global health and development, education and tackling climate change.

India’s first culinary arts museum at WGSHA founded by Chef Vikas Khanna enters Limca Book of Records

  • The Welcomgroup Graduate School of Hotel Management (WGSHA) at Manipal, Karnataka has entered the Limca Book of Records for establishing ‘India’s First Living Culinary Arts Museum’ at WGSHA.
  • Celebrity chef Vikas Khanna is the Founder and curator of India’s first living culinary arts museum at WGSHA.

A.K. Sherwani and Rohini Mohan awarded with Chameli Devi Jain Award 2020

  • Rohini Mohan (Bengaluru-based freelancer) and Arfa Khanum Sherwani (of The Wire) have been jointly awarded Chameli Devi Jain Award 2020 for outstanding woman journalist.
  • The annual award, Chameli Devi Jain Award recognizes social concern, dedication, courage and compassion. It received over 40 entries from all over India representing the print, broadcast and online media.
  • Sherwani was chosen for her reporting from conflict situations in Kashmir and Uttar Pradesh while Rohini was chosen for her report on the NRC exercise in Assam.

World Sleep Day 2020: 13 March

  • World Sleep Day is held every year on the Friday before Spring Vernal Equinox.
  • In 2020, the World Sleep Day was observed on March 13, 2020.
  • The theme of 2020 is ‘Better Sleep, Better Life, Better Planet’.
  • Purpose: to celebrate the benefits of good and healthy sleep and to draw society’s attention to the burden of sleep problems and their medical, educational, and social aspects, and to promote the prevention and management of sleep disorders.

Former Olympic Javelin Champion Dana Zatopkova passes away at 97

  • Dana Zatopkova, the 1952 Olympic javelin champion has passed away. She was 97.
  • Dana was the wife of four-time Olympic champion Emil Zatopek.
  • Besides the gold from the Helsinki Olympics in 1952, Zatopkova also won the Olympic silver in Rome in 1960.
