Cultural festival Jashn-e-Adab to be held in New Delhi

  • The 7th edition of Jashn-e-Adab, one of the biggest language and poetry festivals in the Urdu and Hindi genre will be held in New Delhi from November 23.
  • The three-day festival of arts, culture and language will feature over 100 artists, writers, poets, painters, musicians, and singers from India and beyond.
  • Jashn-e-Adab will give its first ‘Bekal Utsahi’ award to poet Uday Pratap Singh.

Religious Nongkrem Dance Festival Held In Meghalaya

  • Nongkram Dance is the religious dance festival of Meghalaya and is celebrated annually in the month of November mainly by the inhabitants of the Khasi Hills.
  • In Khasi Hills the Nongkrem Dance Carnival is also known as Shad Nongkrem and is performed every year at Smit, which is the capital of Khyrem Syiemship near Shillong.
  • The unique dance is performed by the members of Hima Khyrim, a sub-tribe of the indigenous Khasi tribe. 
  • The purpose of Nongkrem Dance is to seek blessings of Goddess ‘Ka Blei Synshar’ for a huge agricultural yield and welfare of the people.

Kerala Launches Gau Samridhi Plus Scheme For Dairy Farmers

  • Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan launched the ‘Cow Samridhi Plus Scheme’.
  • The government subsidized scheme will give insurance coverage to dairy farmers in the state at low premium rates.
  • As proposed, farmers belonging to the general category will be getting 50% subsidy on premiums while those belonging to Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribe (ST) category would get 70% subsidy on the premium.

Government approves to set up 1,023 fast track courts under Nirbhaya Fund

  1. Women & Child Development Ministry has approved 3 Fresh proposals for Expenditure under Nirbhaya Fund:
  2. 1023 Fast Track Special Courts (FTSCs): Department of Justice, Ministry of Law and Justice proposal to set up 1023 Fast Track Special Courts (FTSCs) to dispose off pending cases of rape, and POCSO Act across the country. The project has a total financial implication of Rs. 767.25 crores. In the First phase, 777 FTSCs may be set up in 9 states and in second phase 246 FTSCs will be set up.
  3. The Proposal of Ministry of Home Affairs for procurement of forensic kits for sexual assault cases to kick start usage of such kits in States/UTs through TOTs (Training of Trainers), capacity building/training for forensics in sexual assault cases and strengthening of State FSLs under Nirbhaya Fund with a total  financial implication of Rs. 107.19  crores was also approved
  4. The Proposal from Konkan Railway Corporation Limited for setting up video surveillance system at 50 Railway Stations with a total Project cost of Rs 17.64 crores that will be utilised for surveillance hardware and accessories, local connectivity equipment and power supply devices also stands approved.
  5. An amount of Rs 1,000 crore was provided in 2014-15 and for the financial years 2016-17 and 2017-18, an amount of Rs 550 crore each was provided under the Nirbhaya Fund.

Indian Navy completes refit of Maldivian Coast Guard Ship Huravee

  • Maldivian Coast Guard Ship (MCGS) Huravee successfully completed her refit at Naval Dockyard Visakhapatnam and the ship was formally handed over to MCGS Huravee.
  • The four-month long refit to MCGS Huravee is an initiative by the Indian Navy undertaken in furtherance of the Indian Navy’s diplomatic outreach to friendly foreign navies in the Indian Ocean Region. 
  • MCGS Huravee was originally commissioned as INS Tillanchang.

Ibrahim Mohamed Solih sworn in as Maldives president

  • Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has been appointed as the new president of the Maldives replacing Abdulla Yameen.

Cueist Pankaj Advani Bags 20th World Billiards Title

  • India’s ace cueist Pankaj Advani won his third straight IBSF billiards crown in the 150-up format, taking his overall tally of world titles to a staggering 20 
  • The 33-year-old from Bengaluru beat Nay Thway Oo of Myanmar in a high-quality final to win the IBSF World Billiards Championship.
  • Myanmar Billiards & Snooker Federation (MBSF) is hosting the 2018 IBSF World Billiards & World Snooker championships from 12th November till 27th November 2018 at Grand Mercure Hotel, Yangon, Myanmar

Viswanathan Anand Wins Tata Steel Chess India Blitz

  • Viswanathan Anand won the inaugural Tata Steel Chess India blitz tournament in Kolkata by beating overnight leader Hikaru Nakamura in the play-off.
  • Anand secured 6 wins and 3 draws in 9 rounds to force a play-off vs Hikaru Nakamura

Hero of 1971 Indo-Pak War, Brigadier Kuldip Singh Chandpuri Passes Away

  • Brigadier Kuldip Singh Chandpuri (retd), who is known as the hero of the historic 1971 battle of Longewala, passed away due to cancer in Mohali in Punjab. He was 78.
  • Brig Chandpuri was a Maha Vir Chakra awardee.
  • The battle of Longewala (1971 Indo-Pak War) fought between assaulting Pakistani forces and Indian defenders at the Indian border post of Longewala in the Thar desert of Rajasthan saw India defeat Pakistan and led to the liberation of Bangladesh.

Ad guru and Theatre Personality Alyque Padamsee passes away at 90

  • Veteran actor, theatre personality and advertising guru Alyque Padamsee passed away. He was 90. 
  • Padamsee is best remembered for his role of Mohammed Ali Jinnah in Richard Attenborough’s multi-Oscar award winner classic, ‘Gandhi’ (1982). 
  • He was also known as the brains behind several iconic Indian ad campaigns such as Lalitaji for Surf, the Liril girl under the waterfall, Hamara Bajaj and the MRF muscle man.
  • Padamsee was conferred with the Padmashri in 2000 by the President of India and he also received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Tagore Ratna in 2012.

Mardal maestro Banamali Maharana passes away

  • Eminent Mardala player (musical instrument like dholak ) Banamali Maharana passed. He was 77.
  • Maharana was honoured with the prestigious Orissa Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1994, Kendriya Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2004 and the Kabi Samrat Upendra Bhanja Sanman in 2016.
