World Book and Copyright Day: April 23

  • The World Book and Copyright Day also known as International Day of the Book and World Book Day, is an annual event the organized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to promote reading, publishing, and copyright.
  • The first World Book Day was celebrated on 23 April 1995.
  • The theme of the 24th edition of the World Book Day is ‘celebrating literature and reading with a focus on the importance of enhancing and protecting indigenous languages’.

World Book Capital

  • As a part of the Day, UNESCO selects the World Book Capital every year. The World Book Capital for 2019 is Sharjah, United Arab Emirates. It will be preceded by Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in the year 2020

International Year of the Indigenous Languages

  • The UNESCO is observing the year 2019 as the International Year of the Indigenous Languages.
