PM Modi Launches Several Development Projects in North Eastern States of Arunachal, Assam and Tripura

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi was on two days visit to 3 northeastern state of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and Tripura from February 8 to 9, 2019 to inaugurate various projects and address rallies.
  • PM started his visit with Arunachal Pradesh followed by Assam and Tripura respectively.

Arunachal Pradesh

  • In Arunachal, PM inaugurated and laid foundation of following projects
    • Greenfield airport at Hollongi in Parum Pare district
    • Inaugurated the upgraded Tezu Airport.
    • Dedicated the 110 MW Pare hydroelectric power plant to the nation.
    • Launched a project to construct a strategic tunnel in Sela that will reduce travel time to the India-China border town of Tawang by over an hour.
    • Launched a new, dedicated, round-the-clock Doordarshan channel ‘DD Arun Prabha’ for state.
    • Laid the foundation stone for 7 Extra High Voltage (EHV) Sub-stations and 24 Low Tension (LT) Sub-stations in Itanagar
    • Laid foundation stone for a permanent campus of the prestigious Film and Television Institute of India at Jote
    • Inaugurated 50 health and wellness centers in the state.

Assam

  • PM laid the foundation of a six-lane bridge over the river Brahmaputra in Guwahati.
  • Inaugurated construction work of an All India Institute of Medical Sciences or AIIMS at Changsari.
  • In energy sector, he inaugurated the Numaligarh Refinery’s bio-diesel plant and the Barauni-Guwahati gas pipeline.
  • Laid the foundation stone of Northeast Gas Grid for uninterrupted supply of natural gas across the northeast.
  • Inaugurated a gas processing plant in Tinsukia and an LPG capacity augmentation of mounted storage vessel in Guwahati.
  • Laid the foundation stone of NRL bio-refinery at Numaligarh
  • 729-km long Barauni-Guwahati gas pipeline

Tripura

  • PM Modi unveiled a plaque to dedicate the Garjee-Belonia railway line to the nation.
  • Inaugurated the new complex of the Tripura Institute of Technology
  • Unveiled the statue of Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya Bahadur at Maharaja Bir Bikram Airport in Agartala.

2nd ASEAN-India Youth Summit Held in Guwahati

  • The 2nd ASEAN-India Youth Summit was held in Guwahati, Assam from 03-07 February 2019.
  • It was organised by Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India (MEA) in collaboration with India Foundation.
  • The theme of the event was “Connectivity: Pathway to Shared Prosperity”
  • The Summit provides a platform for youth leaders of both India and ASEAN to engage with each other to develop a resilient and symbiotic relationship between countries. 
  • It was attended by youth leaders from India and ten ASEAN countries – Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam

Ladakh becomes third administrative division of Jammu an Kashmir

  • The Jammu and Kashmir government on February 08, 2019 approved the creation of a separate Administrative Revenue Division for Ladakh. This division will comprise Leh and Kargil Districts with its headquarters at Leh.
  • Now, Jammu and Kashmir will have three divisions – Jammu, Ladakh and Kashmir.
  • Ladakh is one of the most sparsely populated regions in Jammu and Kashmir and is the highest plateau in the state, with most of it being over 9,800 feet above sea level. 

Meghalaya govt to rename Dikkibandi stadium after P A Sangma

  • Meghalaya Government has given approval to the renaming of Dikkibandi stadium after P A Sangma. He was the former Chief Minister of Megahlaya.
  • Dikkibandi Stadium is located in Tura, Meghalaya. Earlier it was known by name MP Stadium.

Book titled “Ramayan Retold With Scientific Evidences” authored by Saroj Bala released

  • A book titled “Ramayan Retold With Scientific Evidences” that is authored by Saroj Bala has been released. Union Minister Suresh Prabhu has released the book.
  • The book narrates the biography of Lord Ram with exact dates of important events, depicting corresponding sky views and weaving other supporting scientific evidences into the story told by Maharshi Valmiki.
  • The author is an IRS officer of 1972 batch, had retired as Member of CBDT in 2009.

Ranjan Gogoi Launches Book “Law, Justice and Judicial Power – Justice P N Bhagwati’s Approach” by Moolchand Sharma

  • The Chief Justice of India, Shri Justice Ranjan Gogoi released the book “Law, Justice and Judicial Power – Justice PN Bhagwati’s Approach” at a function held in New Delhi and presented the first copy of the book to President of India, Shri Ram Nath Kovind.
  • The book has been edited by Moolchand Sharma, comprising of 24 essays written in the honor of the late Justice P.N. Bhagwati, contributed by eminent persons across professions and disciplines.
  • Justice Bhagwati has been called the father of public interest litigation (PIL) in India and was the 17th Chief Justice of India from July 1985 to December 1986.

Mirabai Chanu Lifts Gold at EGAT Cup in Thailand

  • Indian weightlifting World champion Saikhom Mirabai Chanu won gold medal at the EGAT’s Cup International Weightlifting Championship 2019 held in Thailand.
  • The 24-year-old Manipuri lifted 192 kg (82kg in snatch and 110kg in clean and jerk) to finish on top of the podium in the 49kg category
  • Japan’s Miyake Hiromi (183kg) won silver while the bronze went to Papua New Guinea’s Loa Dika Toua (179kg). 
  • The points from the events will count in the final rankings for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic.
