India’s first indigenously built Dhanush howitzer inducted in Army

  • India’s first indigenously designed and developed Dhanush artillery gun was inducted in the Indian Army. It has been developed by Ordnance Factory Board (OFB).
  • The Dhanush gun system is based on the designs of the Bofors howitzer. Dhanush is the third type of artillery gun to be inducted into the force after the K-9 Vajra and the M-777 ultra-light howitzers.
  • Dhanush is a 155mm, 45-calibre towed artillery gun with a range of 36km. Six such Dhanush Howitzer have been delivered out of total 114.

World Bank Projects India’s GDP to Accelerate Moderately to 7.5% in 2019-20

  • In its latest report on South Asia, the World Bank has forecasted India’s GDP growth to accelerate moderately to 7.5 percent in Fiscal Year 19-20.
  • The estimated growth is driven by continued investment strengthening, particularly private-improved export performance and resilient consumption.
  • The bank has estimated the real GDP growth at 7.2 percent in the fiscal 2018-19.

SC increases VVPAT count to 5 EVMs per Assembly constituency from 1 in LS polls

  • The Supreme Court has ordered the Election Commission to increase the VVPAT count of one randomly selected electronic voting machine per Assembly constituency to five in the Lok Sabha polls.
  • This has been done to ensure the “greatest degree of accuracy and satisfaction” in the electoral process.

IIT Madras Top Indian Institute: NIRF 2019 Rankings

  • The fourth edition of the National Institutional Ranking Framework or NIRF India Rankings 2019 was announced on April 8, 2019 by the Ministry of Human Resource Development in New Delhi.
  • The President of India, Shri Ram Nath Kovind, released the India Rankings 2019 and presented the India Rankings awards to the top institutions in 9 different categories.
  • He also released the first edition of Atal Ranking of Institutions on Innovation Achievements (ARIIA).
  • The rankings were based on parameters namely Teaching, Learning and Resources, Research and Professional Practices, Graduation Outcomes, Outreach and Inclusivity, and Perception.
  • Top Winner of First Atal Ranking of Institutions on Innovation Achievements (ARIIA) –Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras)

UK introduces world’s first online safety regulations

  • The UK government has introduced the world’s first framework designed to hold internet companies accountable for the safety of those using their services, as well to tackle potential harm to users.
  • With the UK has become the first nation to introduce an online safety regulation.

US – Morocco Joint Military Exercise “African Lion 2019” Concludes

  • The 16th edition of the joint military exercise between Morocco and the United States named “African Lion 2019” was held from March 16 to April 7, 2019 in southern Morocco in the cities of Agadir, Tifnit, Tan-Tan, Tata, and Ben Guerir near Marrakech.
  • The Annual Moroccan-US drill was also participated by observers and military personnel from 15 countries representing Africa, North America, and Europe .
  • African Lion is an annual exercise organised to improve interoperability and mutual understanding of each nation’s tactics, techniques and procedures.

Graham Reid appointed coach of Indian men’s hockey team

  • Graham Reid of Australia has been appointed as the chief coach of the Indian men’s hockey team.
  • Before this, he has served as the coach of the Australian Hockey team. He was also a part of Champions Trophy titles winning Australian team in 1984, 1985, 1989 and 1990.

Vikramjit Sahney appointed as president of ICC India

  • Vikramjit Singh Sahney has been elected as the new president of International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) – India. He is the Chairman of SUN Group.

Nobel Laureate Sydney Brenner Passes Away at 92

  • A South African biologist and 2002 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine laureate, Sydney Brenner, passes away in Singapore. He was 92.
  • Sydney Brenner shared the Nobel Prize jointly with H. Robert Horvitz and John E. Sulston “for their discoveries concerning genetic regulation of organ development and programmed cell death’.”
