Nation Pays Homage to Mahatma Gandhi on His 71st Death Anniversary

  • Every year on January 30, India pays homage to Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi to mark his death anniversary. The day is also observed as Martyrs’ Day.
  • 2019 marked his 71st death anniversary.
  • It was on this day in 1948, that Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi Ji was assassinated by Nathuram Godse.

PM Modi Lays Foundation Stone of Various Development Projects in Surat

  • Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi was in Surat on January 30, 2019 to lay foundation stone of various development projects. These included: 
  • Laying foundation stone for extension of Terminal Building of Surat Airport with a construction cost of Rs.354 crore. With the completion of the project, the airport will be able to handle 26 lakh passengers in a year in place of 4 lakhs now.
  • Distributing keys to some beneficiaries of Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana in Surat.
  • Inaugurating a state-of-the-art super speciality, Rasilaben Sevantilal Shah Venus Hospital in Surat.
  • Unveiling the National Salt Satyagraha Memorial. The memorial has statues of Mahatma Gandhi and 80 Satyagrahis who had marched with him during the historic Dandi Salt March to make salt from sea water.
  • Addressing New India Youth Conclave at Surat Indoor Stadium.

Textile Ministry Signs Agreement for Direct Sourcing of Handloom Products

  • The Union Textile Ministry has signed agreements with 5 leading clothing/textile industry players to link textile companies and handloom clusters.
  • The agreement allows textile firms namely Raymond, Welspun, Titan, Reliance Retail and the Sachin Tendulkar-promoted True Blue to directly source their requirements for handlooms from handloom weavers.
  • The move will ensure sustainable development of the sector resulting in enhanced income opportunities for weavers.
  • The agreement were signed during an event “Aritsan Speak” at the UNESCO World Heritage site Elephanta Caves near Mumbai to showcase the GI (Geographical Indication) Textiles of India. 
  • The first-of-its-kind event was organized by the Ministry of Textiles in partnership with IMG Reliance.

Union Minister Piyush Goyal Receives Prestigious Carnot Prize 2018

  • The Kleinman Center for Energy Policy at the University of Pennsylvania School of Design has presented the 4th annual Carnot Prize to Union Minister Railways & Coal Shri Piyush Goyal.
  • The award recognizes India’s path breaking transformations in energy sector by eliminating energy poverty with sustainable energy solutions.
  • The award money that the Minister will receive as part of the 2018 Carnot Prize, will be donated to the International Solar Alliance to institute the Diwakar Award. 
  • The Diwakar award will recognise, every year, an outstanding organisation that has been working for special children and maximising the use of solar energy.
  • The Carnot Prize is the Kleinman Center’s top prize to recognize distinguished contributions to energy policy through scholarship or practice.

DIPP Rechristened as ‘Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade’

  • The Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP) has been renamed as the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade.
  • The newly-named department under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry will look into matters related to promotion of internal trade, including retail trade, welfare of traders and their employees, facilitating ease of doing business and start-ups.
  • Earlier, the internal trade matter was under the domain of the Ministry of Consumer Affairs.

EPFO’s Central Board of Trustees Approves Re-constitution of 3 key Committees

  • The Central Government has reconstituted the Central Board of Trustees (CBT), EPFO under section 5A of Employees’ Provident Fund & Miscellaneous Provision Act, 1952, after the five-year tenure of the earlier board came to an end. 
  • As per the guidelines for the new board, no member can continue on the board for more than two terms of five years each, to make way for younger representatives of employees and employers. 
  • The newly-reconstituted central board of trustees (CBT) of the Employees Provident Fund Organisation have approved the re-constitution of three key committees. These are:
    • Finance, Investment and Audit Committee (FIAC)
    • Pension & EDLI Implementation Committee (PEIC)
    • Exempted Establishments Committee (EEC)

India Ranks 78 in Global Corruption Index 2018 by Transparency International

  • India has remarkably improved its ranking by three points and moved to 78th position on Global Corruption Index in 2018 with a score of 41.
  • The Corruption Perceptions Index is released annually by global anti-corruption watchdog Transparency International.
  • The 2018 Index was topped by Denmark followed by New Zealand among 180 countries. 
  • Somalia, Syria and South Sudan were the most corrupt countries in the world.

Odisha Increases Number of Target Beneficiaries Under KALIA Scheme to Five Folds

  • The state government of Odisha has decided to hike the number of target beneficiaries by five-fold for farmers’ welfare scheme KALIA in the landless agricultural household category.
  • As per the new proposal, 5 lakh beneficiaries would be targeted instead of 1 lakh earlier during 2019-20.
  • Each beneficiary household under the landless agricultural category will get Rs 12,500 as assistance under the Krushak Assistance for Livelihood and Income Augmentation (KALIA) scheme.
  • The amount would be paid in three tranches.
  • KALIA scheme has five components such as:
    1. support to cultivators for cultivation,
    2. livelihood support for landless agricultural labourers,
    3. life insurance support for cultivators and landless agricultural labourers,
    4. financial assistance to vulnerable agricultural households and
    5. interest free crop loan.

Dubai International Retains Top Position as World’s Busiest Airport

  • Dubai International Airport (DXB) retained its top position as the world’s busiest airport for international travel in 2018 for the fifth consecutive year.
  • Dubai Airport first surpassed London Heathrow as the world’s busiest airport for international traffic in 2014. 
  • India remained the biggest source of traffic for DXB, with maximum passengers from the Indian cities of Mumbai, Delhi and Cochin, followed by Saudi Arabia and United Kingdom respectively.
  • However, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport in Georgia remains the world’s busiest airport overall.

Vice Admiral G Ashok Kumar Assumes Charge as Vice Chief of the Naval Staff

  • Vice Admiral G Ashok Kumar assumed charge as Vice Chief of the Naval Staff (VCNS) on 30 January 2019. 
  • He took over from Vice Admiral Ajit Kumar P, who completed his tenure on January 30.
  • In addition, Vice Admiral MS Pawar has assumed charge as Deputy Chief of the Naval Staff.

Dilip Sadarangani is New Part Time Chairman of Federal Bank

  • The Reserve Bank of India has approved the appointment of Dilip Gena Sadarangani as Part Time Chairman of Federal Bank. 
  • He has been on the bank’s board since 2013.
