Feb 1 cut-off date for eligibility consideration under PM-Kisan scheme

  • Central Governement had announced the Pradhan Mantri KIsan SAmman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) in its Interim Budget 2019-20 wherein farmer having cultivable land upto 2 hectare will get direct income support of Rs 6000 per year.
  • Government has now informed the cutoff date for eligibility of farmers under this scheme. The cut-off date is February 01, 2019. Also any changes to land records after that would not be considered for eligibility of the benefit for the next five years. Also it must be noted that the date of effectiveness of the scheme continues to be December 01, 2018
  • It means those farmers who have less than 2 hectare of land as on February 01, 2019 (cutoff date) will be paid the amount w.e.f December 01, 2018. 

PM Lays Foundation Stone of Several Development Projects During Visit to Jammu & Leh

  • The Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi was on a day-long visit to Jammu and Kashmir on February 3, 2019 to inaugurate and lay foundation stone for various development projects.
  • In Jammu, PM Modi laid foundation stones for:
    • New All India Institute of Medical Sciences at Vijaypur and Samba,
    • 624 Megawatt Kiru Hydroelectric project and 850 Megawatt Ratle Hydro Electric project in Kishtwar.
    • 1.6 kilometres long double lane bridge over Chenab river at Sajwal Jourian in Akhnoor
    • Project on abatement of Devika and Tawi rivers under National River Conservation Plan.
    • Indian Institute of Mass Communication campus of Northern Regional Centre at Jammu
    • Inaugurated an engineering institute at Janglote in Kathua.
  • The Prime Minister also visited Leh where he inaugurated and laid foundation stone of:
    • 9-megawatt Dah hydroelectric project
    • 220 KiloVolt Srinagar-Alusteng-Drass-Kargil-Leh transmission system constructed by POWERGRID at Rs. 2266 crore
    • Launched University of Ladakh, which will be a cluster university comprising degree colleges of Leh, Kargil, Nubra, Zanskar, Drass and Khalsi.
    • Rs 480 crore Terminal Building at Leh Airport. 
    • New tourist and trekking routes in Ladakh

4th International Spice Conference held in Hyderabad

  • The 4th edition of International Spice Conference 2019 was held in Hyderabad, Telangana.
  • It provided the a platform for all stake holders of the industry including the business houses, the spice associations, the policy makers, the farmers and the end users, to address and interact.

Indus River Dolphin declared State aquatic animal of Punjab

  • Indus River Dolphins have been declared Punjab’s State aquatic animal. They are found only in India and Pakistan in the Beas river. In Punjab, the Indus River Dolphins are found mainly in the Sutlej and Beas rivers.
  • The decision was taken in the Punjab State Wildlife Board presided over by the Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh.
  • Punjab has Black Buck as its state animal. Baaj, also known as northern goshawk (accipiter gentilis), as the official state bird.

Odisha announces ‘KALIA Chhatra Bruti’ for scholarships to children

  • Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on February 03, 2019 announced the ‘KALIA Chhatra Bruti’, which will provide scholarships to the children of the KALIA scheme beneficiaries for pursuing higher education.
  • Under the scholarship scheme, the government will bear the educational expenses of the children of the Krushak Assistance for Livelihood and Income Augmentation (KALIA) beneficiaries, who are studying in government professional colleges on merit.
  • Details of the scheme will be known once the state government will issue detail guidelines. 

P V Bharathi assumes charge as CEO of Corporation Bank

  • Former Canara Bank executive director P V Bharathi took charge as Managing Director and CEO of  Corporation Bank on February 01, 2019.
  • She is the first woman to serve the Corporation bank as MD/CEO. 

Kristalina Georgieva takes charge as Interim President of the World Bank

  • CEO of World Bank, Kristalina Georgieva, assumed the role of Interim President of the World Bank effective as of 1st of February. She is from Bulgaria.
  • The appointment comes after World Bank Group President Jim Yong Kim on January 07, 2019 announced that he will be stepping down from his position.
  • In the meanwhile a full time President for World Bank will be elected.

EU Parliament Recognises Guaido as Venezuelan Interim President

  • Juan Guaido was declared as the interim President of Venezuela by the European Parliament on February 1, 2019.
  • Juan Guaido was serving as the President of the National Assembly of Venezuela since 5 January 2019.
  • Nicolas Maduro won the 2018 election with 67.8% of the vote, however, the result was denounced as fraudulent by most neighboring countries including European Union, and refused to recognize the validity of his 2018 reelection. 
  • Under the Constitution of Venezuela, if the office of President of the Republic becomes vacant, the President of the National Assembly may serve as interim president until elections can be held.

Pakistan Conducts Sucessfull Test-Firing of Short-Range Ballistic Missile Nasr

  • The Pakistan Army successfully test-fired the short range surface-to-surface ballistic missile ”Nasr” recently.
  • Nasr has a strike range of about 70-km.
  • It is a high precision, shoot and scoot weapon system with the ability of in-flight maneuverability
  • In an another achievement, Iran unveiled a new cruise missile, Hoveizeh, with a range of 1,300 kilometres. 
  • This surface-to-surface missile was launched to mark the 40th anniversary of the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

Ramit Tandon wins Seattle Open title (Squash)

  • Indian squash player Ramit Tandon defeated Mohamed El Sherbini of Egypt in the finals to win the Seattle Open, a PSA challenger squash Tour held in USA.
