India’s GDP growth rate projected at 7% in 2018-19: CSO

  • Central Statistics Office (CSO) has released the Second Advance Estimates of National Income.
  • As per the data the GDP growth rate projected for India in 2018-19 is 7%.
  • The GDP growth rate in 2017-18 was 7.2% as per CSO.

RBI constitutes the Task Force on Offshore Rupee Markets; Chairperson- Smt. Usha Thorat

  • The Reserve Bank has set up a Task Force on Offshore Rupee Markets. It has 8 members and is headed by Smt. Usha Thorat, former Deputy Governor, Reserve Bank of India
  • The task force shall examine the issues relating to the offshore Rupee markets in depth and recommend appropriate policy measures that also factor in the requirement of ensuring the stability of the external value of the Rupee.

RBI Signs USD 75 Billion Bilateral Swap Arrangement (BSA) Agreement with Bank of Japan

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has signed the Agreement for Bilateral Swap Arrangement (BSA) with the Bank of Japan (BOJ) worth USD 75 billion.
  • This agreement for BSA has come into effect from February 28, 2019.
  • This agreement will allow both countries to swap their local currencies (Japanese yen or Indian rupee) against US dollar for a maximum amount of USD 75 billion.
  • In simple words, each country can borrow foreign currency in order to purchase US dollars in the foreign exchange market and buy its own domestic currency in the open market.

AIIB and INDIA sign US$ 455 Million Loan to improve Rural Connectivity in State of Andhra Pradesh

  • The Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) and the Government of India signed a USD 455 million loan  to finance the Andhra Pradesh Rural Roads Project.
  • The objective of the Project is to improve road transport connectivity in previously unserved communities by providing all weather rural roads in all 13 Districts of the State of Andhra Pradesh.

PNB tops in the implementation of ‘reforms agenda’ in 2018: EASE Reforms ranking

  • Shri Arun Jaitley released the first report on EASE Reforms Index on February 28, 2019. It measures progress on the Public Sector Banks (PSB) Reforms Agenda announced last January on 140 objective, benchmarked metrics.
  • EASE stands for – Enhanced Access and Service Excellence. The Index measures performance of each PSB on 140 objective metrics across 6 themes
  • As per the Report, Punjab National Bank has topped the list among public sector banks in the implementation of ‘reforms agenda’, followed by Bank of Baroda and State Bank of India.

IRCTC launched its own Payment aggregator iPay

  • The Indian Rail Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) on February 28, 2019 launched its own payment aggregator system ‘IRCTC iPay’ in a bid to promote digital transactions.
  • With the launch of IRCTC iPay, the passengers will not need any third-party platforms while booking tickets online. IRCTC iPay provides payment options like credit card, debit card, unified payment interface, international card.
  • IRCTC iPay will help reduce the gap between IRCTC and banks which will eventually lead to a substantial reduction in payment failures

TECH-SOP 2019 for MSMEs held in New Delhi

  • The Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) organized a programme on Technology Support and Outreach (TECH-SOP 2019) in New Delhi.
  • The objective of the programme was to enhance awareness among MSMEs about latest technological innovations available, and sensitize them on the role of technology in creating competitiveness and opportunities

BioAsia 2019 Concludes in Hyderabad

  • The 16th Edition of the BioAsia 2019 was held in Hyderabad, Telangana from February 25 to 27, 2019. It is Asia’s largest Biotechnology and Life-sciences forum.
  • The 3 day event was based on the theme “Life Sciences 4.0 – Disrupt the Disruption”.
  • The event is the leading technology and bio-business convention in Asia to strengthen Life sciences, pharmaceuticals and healthcare ecosystem.

PM Modi Confers Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Awards for 2016, 2017 and 2018

  • The Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi  presented the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology in New Delhi on 28 February 2019.
  • The award was presented for the year 2016, 2017 and 2018. A total of 35 recipients were presented with the award in different fields.
  • The Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology is a multi-disciplinary science award in India presented annually by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). It was first presented in 1958.

LIC’s Hemant Bhargava Takes Charge as Non-Executive Chairman of IDBI Bank

  • Hemant Bhargava has been appointed as the non-executive, non-whole time chairman of IDBI Bank.
  • Bhargava is currently the Chairman (in-charge) and Managing Director of Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC).
  • He has been appointed for three years or until his position at LIC, whichever is earlier.
  • IDBI Bank and Life Insurance Corporation of India have also signed a bancassurance agreement under which the lender will offer LIC’s insurance products at its branches.
  • LIC is the majority shareholder in IDBI Bank (51 percent).

ISSF World Cup: India Jointly Tops with Hungary with 3 Medals

  • The 2019 ISSF World Cup was held from February 20 to 28, 2019 in New Delhi by the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF).
  • India finished joint third with Hungary on Medal Tally list with 3 medals (all gold).
  • However, of the 14 quota places offered by tournament for the 2020 Tokyo Games, India managed to secure only one Olympic quota.
  • China finished third with most number of medals (10 [1-6-3]) and also secured 5 quota places for Tokyo 2020 Olympic.
  • List of the three gold medals from India:
    1. Women’s 10m Air Rifle event – Apurvi Chandela 
    2. Men’s 10m Air Pistol event – Saurabh Chaudhary
    3. 10-metre Air Pistol Mixed Team Event – Saurabh Chaudhary and Manu Bhaker

  • Purpose – To commemorate the discovery of Raman effect.
  • Indian physicist Sir C V Raman discovered the Raman effect on 28 February 1928.and was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930 for it.
