Indigenously Developed Train 18 Renamed As Vande Bharat Express

  • India’s first indigenously developed locomotive-less semi-high speed train, Train 18, has been named as ‘Vande Bharat Express’.
  • The announcement was made by Union Minister of Railways and Coal, Shri Piyush Goyal on January 27, 2019.
  • The decision regarding the change of name was taken based on the made-in-India status of the train.
  • Train 18 has been manufactured by Integral Coach Factory (ICF), Chennai in the period of 18 months under ‘Make in India’ program.
  • The 16-coach train is India’s first semi-high speed engine-less train equipped with world class passenger amenities.
  • It will be running on the Delhi-Varanasi route at a maximum speed of 160 kmph to reduce the journey time by 25% to 45%. 

PM Modi Lays Foundation Stone for Petrochemical complex at BPCL Kochi Refinery in Kerala

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited  Kochi, Kerala on January 27, 2019 where he laid foundation stone for various projects.
  • He unveiled a plaque to dedicate to the nation, Rs 16,500 crore integrated refinery expansion complex of the public sector Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) at the Kochi Refinery.
  • He also laid the foundation stone for a petrochemical complex at the Kochi Refinery
  • Besides, he laid the foundation stone of a skill development institute at Ettumanoor.
  • Mr Modi also inaugurated a mounded storage vessel at an LPG bottling plant of the Indian Oil Corporation Limited in Kochi. 

PM Modi Visits Tamil Nadu; Lays foundation stone for AIIMS Madurai

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for All India Institutes of Medical Sciences, AIIMS at Thoppur near Madurai in Tamil Nadu  at a cost of Rs 1,264 crore on January 27, 2019.
  • He also inaugurated three super speciality blocks in the government medical colleges in Madurai, Tirunelveli and Thanjavur at a total cost of Rs 450 Crore under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY).
  • Mr Modi also dedicated 12 post office Passport Sewa Kendras in Tamil Nadu to the nation. 

Poonam Khetrapal Singh Reappointed WHO Regional Director for South-East Asia

  • Poonam Khetrapal Singh has been appointed as the Regional Director of the South-East Asia region of the World Health Organization (WHO) for a second five-year term.
  • The WHO Executive Board unanimously re-appointed Khetrapal Singh on January 26 after she was unanimously nominated by 11 member-countries of the region for another five years.
  • She is the first woman to become Regional Director of WHO South-East Asia Region.

Saina Nehwal Wins Indonesia Masters 2019 After Injured Marin Withdraws From Final

  • Saina Nehwal was declared the winner of the Women’s Single title at Indonesia Masters 2019 on January 27.
  • The Indian shuttler was crowned the title as the reigning Olympic and World Champion Carolina Marin pulled out in the opening game of their Summit clash in Jakarta due to knee injury.
  • The 2019 Indonesia Masters was held in Indonesia from 22 to 27 January 2019

Novak Djokovic beats Rafael Nadal to Clinch 2019 Australian Open Grand Slam

  • Novak Djokovic defeated Rafael Nadal 6-3, 6-2, 6-3, to win his 7th Australian Open Men’s Singles title at Melbourne on January 27.
  • This is also the 15th Grand Slam title for the Serbian world number one.
  • With this win, Djokovic has surpassed American legend Pete Sampras to elevate himself to outright third on the all-time Grand Slam title leaderboard. 

International Holocaust Remembrance Day: January 27

  • International Day of Commemoration in memory of the victims of the Holocaust is observed on 27 January every year since 2006 to commemorate the anniversary of the tragedy of the Holocaust that occurred during the Second World War.
  • A genocide occured during World War II in which Nazi Germany, aided by its collaborators, systematically murdered some six million European Jews, around two-thirds of the Jewish population of Europe, between 1941 and 1945.
  • Purpose: United Nations designated the day in 2005 to serve as a date for official commemoration of the victims of the Nazi regime and to promote Holocaust education throughout the world.
  • The theme of the Holocaust remembrance and education activities in 2019 is “Holocaust Remembrance: Demand and Defend Your Human Rights”.
