SC bench headed by Justice R F Nariman upholds constitutional validity of Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code

  • The Supreme Court on January 25, 2019 upheld the constitutional validity of the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC), 2016.
  • A bench headed by Justice R F Nariman said that the bench has upheld the constitutional validity “in its entirety”. The bench consisted of Navin Sinha apart from Justice Nariman.
  • IBC: IBC aims at consolidating all existing insolvency related laws as well as amending
    multiple legislation including the Companies Act. National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) is the adjudicating authority for companies and limited liability partnerships. The Debt Recovery Tribunal (DRT) is the adjudicating authority for individuals and partnership firms.

SC Re-constitutes 5-judge Constitution bench for Hearing Ayodhya Case Under Ranjan Gogoi

  • The Supreme Court of India has re-constituted the five-judge Constitution Bench to hear the politically sensitive Ram Janambhoomi-Babri Masjid land title dispute in Ayodhya.  
  • The new bench includes the names of Justice Abdul Nazeer and Justice Ashok Bhushan.
  • The members of the new Bench comprises of Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi (Head) and Justices S A Bobde, D Y Chandrachud, Ashok Bhushan and S A Nazeer. 
  • Justice U U Lalit, who was a member of the original Bench had recused himself from hearing the matter. In addition, Justice N.V. Ramana is also not a part of the bench now.

Kerala Announces to Launch Rs 5 lakh ‘Pravasi Dividend Pension Scheme’

  • The state government of Kerala has planned to launch a ‘Pravasi Dividend Pension Scheme’ to provide regular pension to Non Resident Keralites on a one-time payment of Rs 5 lakh.
  • The one-time payment of Rs 5 lakh will be deposited with KIIFB (Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board) for financing infrastructure projects

India to grow at 7-7.5% over next few years: EAC-PM

  • The Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister (EAC-PM) has estimated India’s economic growth to remain in the range 7-7.5 percent in the next few years despite global and structural challenges.
  • Currently PMEAC chairman post is held by Bibek Debroy.
  • The Council also said that with reforms designed to address the structural problems, growth rates can easily be enhanced by at least 1 percent.

UNESCO Partners Sahapedia for 2nd India Heritage Walk Festival

  • The second edition of the India Heritage Walk Festival (IHWF) will take place from February 2-28, 2019 across 37 cities of India, with inaugural walk of the edition stating in Ahmedabad on February 2.
  • The India Heritage Walk Festival is a month-long celebration of India’s tangible and intangible cultural heritage with a focus on heritage education and walks for people with special needs. It is organised by Sahapedia in partnership with UNESCO.
  • Sahapedia, an open online multimedia knowledge resource on the arts, cultures and histories of India, has collaborated with about 40 local-level partners to conduct its pan-India heritage walk festival.
  • There will be walks, talks, workshops and Instameets across India covering a broad spectrum of Indian heritage and culture. 

Numaligarh Refinery Limited Wins Best Miniratna PSU Award

  • The Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL) has been awarded the Best Miniratna PSU award in strategic performance (financial category) at the Governance Now Sixth PSU awards.
  • The Awards honour the efforts of Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) that have been key to the country’s growth.
  • The award was presented to NRL Managing Director S K Barua. A total of Nine awards were given in the financial category.

Sultan Ahmad elected as new Malaysian king

  • Sultan of Pahang, Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah has been elected as the new king of Malaysia on January 24, 2019.
  • Sultan Abdullah will formally take over the throne on Jan 31, 2019 for a term of five years. He is of 59 years. Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Shah has been elected deputy king.
  • On January 06, 2019 Sultan Muhammad V made the unprecedented move to step down from the throne. This resulted in a selection of a new king.

ISRO Successfully Launches Satellites Microsat-R & Kalamsat onboard PSLV-C44

  • India successfully launched military satellite Microsat-R and students-built nano-satellite Kalamsat-V2 on January 24, 2019 from the First Launch Pad at Satish Dhawan Space Centre SHAR, Sriharikota.
  • PSLV-C44 successfully injected the 740-kg primary satellite Microsat-R and 1.2 kg Kalamsat-V2 into their designated orbits.
  • Microsat-R is an small Indian earth observation satellite built for the Indian military Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO).
  • Kalamsat, a 10-CM size cube students’ payload has been developed by college students and Chennai-based organisation Space Kidz India. It is said to be the lightest satellite of India.
  • Kalamsat is the first satellite to use PSLV-C44’s fourth stage (PS4), as a platform to orbit around the earth.
  • Some Important Points to Remember:
  • The PSLV C44 is the first launch of India’s space agency in 2019.
  • It was the 46th flight of the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle
  • This flight marked the first mission of PSLV-DL, a new variant of PSLV with two strap-on motors..
  • It was the 35th launch from the first launch pad

Eminent Hindi Author Krishna Sobti Passes Away

  • Eminent Hindi fiction writer and essayist Krishna Sobti passed away in Delhi after brief illness. She was 93.
  • She received prestigious awards like Sahitya Akademi, Jnanpith awards and was also offered Padma Bhushan, which she had declined.

  • The day was established by the Indian government to raise awareness of the importance of tourism for the country’s economy.

National Voters’ Day: January 25

  • India observes “National Voters’ Day” every year on January 25 to encourage more young voters to take part in the political process.
  • The day has been started from January 25, 2011 to mark the Foundation day of Election Commission of India, which was established on 25th January 1950. 
  • The theme of 9th edition of the National Voters’ Day (NVD 2019) is, “No voter to be left behind.”
