India invited as ‘Guest of Honour’ to OIC meet in Abu Dhabhi

  • The 46th Session of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Council of Foreign Ministers will be held in Abu Dhabi from March 1 to 2, 2019.
  • India has been invited as Guest of Honour in this meet. India will be the inaugural plenary of the foreign ministers’ conclave of the OIC.
  • External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj will attend it as the ‘guest of honour’.

Brijbhushan Singh re-elected as the President of WFI

  • Brijbhushan Sharan Singh has been re-elected as the president of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) for a third time.
  • Brijbhushan and the other office bearers were elected unopposed and will serve WFI for a term of three years.
  • I D Nanavati has been elected as the Senior Vice President.

PV Sindhu Becomes First Woman To Co-Pilot Indigenously Built Tejas Fighter Jet

  • Indian Badminton player PV Sindhu has become the first woman to co-pilot the indigenously built Light Combat Aircraft Tejas at the Aero India 2019 in Bengaluru on February 23.
  • Aero India 2019 observed Women’s Day on February 23 to celebrate women’s contribution to the aviation sector.. 
  • Captain Siddharth was the main pilot on the aircraft along with Sindhu while taking the sortie.
  • Apart from Sindhu, American astronaut Sunita Williams also flied in the homemade Tejas, built by the state-run Hindustan Aeronautics Limited.

Harmanpreet Singh named 2018 Player of the Year by Asian Hockey Federation

  • Indian Hockey player Harmanpreet Singh has won the 2018 Player of the Year by Asian Hockey Federation.
  • India women’s Lalremsiami bagged the Rising Player of The Year prize.
  • Best Performance of The Year: Indian Men’s Team (for being the only Asian side to have reached the top eight at the World Cup in Bhubaneswar.)

IOC Suspends India From Organising Olympic-Related Events in Future

  • The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has suspended all discussions with Indian NOC and government and refused to provide hosting rights to the country for organizing global sports events and Olympic related sports in the future.
  • The decision comes after India refused visas for two Pakistan shooters to take part in the New Delhi ISSF World Cup shooting 2019 due to Pulwama terror attack. 
  • IOC has also cancelled the Olympic qualification status for the men’s 25m rapid fire pistol event from the ISSF World Cup. It is the event in which the two Pakistan shooters were to take part.
  • The ban will be valid until the Indian government gives clear written guarantees to ensure access for all athletes. 

Mohamed Tahir Ela appointed New Prime Minister of Sudan amidst Emergency

  • Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir sworn in Mohamed Tahir Ela, as the new Prime Minister of Sudan on February 24, 2019.
  • President Bashir imposed a year-long emergency on February 22, 2019 after the government failed to suppress weeks of protests against his three-decade rule.
  • Prior to his appointment as the Prime Minister, Ela was the former governor of the agricultural state of Jazeera.

Central Excise Day: February 24

  • Purpose: Commemorate the establishment of the Central Excise and Salt Act on 24 February 1944.
  • The day encourages the employees of excise department to carry out the central excise duty in better way across the country to ensure better tax observance
