Shri Nitin Gadkari inaugurates Keerian – Gandial bridge over River Ravi in J&K

  • Union Minister for Road Transport & Highways Shri Nitin Gadkari  inaugurated a 1210-meter span-Keerian – Gandial bridge over the river Ravi in Kathua district in Jammu and Kashmir.
  • The Keerian – Gandial bridge has been constructed at a cost of Rs 158.84 crore.
  • The bridge will provide better inter connectivity between  Kathua in Jammu, and Pathankot in Punjab. It will reduce the distance between the two cities from 45 kms to 8.6 kms. 

Government Constitutes Niti Aayog-led Committee to Monitor Pricing of Drugs

  • The Union Government has constituted a high power committee headed by a Niti Aayog member (Health), to monitor pricing of medicines and healthcare products. 
  • The committee will be the recommending body to National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA). It means the committee will overtake the central role of the NPPA in setting drug prices.
  • Till date, NPPA had the responsibility of implementing Drug Price Control Orders (DPCO) like setting prices, enforcement, use of powers in public interest, price approvals etc.
  • From now, the NITI Aayog committee will decide which drugs should be under price control instead of NPPA.
  • The ministry of chemicals and fertilizers issued an order on January 21 for the formation of a standing committee on affordable medicines and health products (SCAMHP) led by member (health), NITI Aayog.
  • Other member: chief economic adviser in the ministry of finance; secretary of the department of health research; NLEM vice chairman; joint secretary of the department of industrial policy and promotion (DIPP); director general of health services and a subject expert on biomedical devices/pharmaceuticals.

Indian Navy begins ‘Exercise SEA VIGIL’, the largest coastal defence exercise

  • Indian Navy has commenced the largest coastal defence Exercise SEA VIGIL off the Indian coast on January 22, 2019. It is a two day exercise.
  • Exercise SEA VIGIL, a first of its kind, is being undertaken along the entire 7516.6 km coastline and Exclusive Economic Zone of India and is involving all the 13 coastal States and Union Territories along with all maritime stakeholders, including the fishing and coastal communities.
  • Exercise SEA VIGIL aims to comprehensively and holistically validate the efficacy of the measures taken since ’26/11′ i.e the terror attack in Mumbai in 2008.
  • The two-day exercise will serve as a build-up to the major theatre-level tri-service exercise, TROPEX (Theatre-level Readiness Operational Exercise) conducted by the Indian Navy every two years.

India 4th most attractive investment market for global CEOs: PwC survey

  • India has surpassed the UK to become fourth most attractive destination for global CEOs as per a PwC survey. The survey result was released on the first day of the World Economic Forum (WEF) annual meeting being held in Davos, Switzerland.
  • The US topped with 27 per cent (down from 46 per cent last year), followed by China with 24 per cent (down from 33 per cent) and Germany at 13 per cent (down from 20 per cent).

2019 Annual Meet of World Economic Forum Begins in Davos

  • The Annual Meeting of World Economic Forum (WEF) began in Davos, Switzerland on January 22, 2019.
  • The theme of the annual meet 2019 is “Globalization 4.0: Shaping a Global Architecture in the Age of the Fourth Industrial Revolution”.
  • Th event will conclude on January 25, 2019.
  • The aim of the meeting is to present an annual opportunity for leaders across business and government to come together to discuss solutions to the world’s most pressing economic and social challenges

All Women RPF Squad ‘JOYMATI BAHINI’ Launched in Guwahati

  • The Railway Protection Force (RPF) of Lumding Division in Assam has launched a dedicated RPF all Women Squad named as ‘JOYMATI BAHINI’ for enhancing the security of women around Guwahati region within railway premises and trains. 
  • Launched formally at the Kamkhaya Railway Station in Guwahati, the JOYMATI BAHINI will comprise of women sub-inspector and constables of the Railway Protection Force.
  • The squad has been named after the courageous princess, Joymati.
  • In addition to this, Passengers can also dial 182 immediately in case of any emergency on running trains or platforms.

Mauritius to Organize ‘Bhojpuri Mahotsav’ in 2020

  • Mauritian Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth, while delivering the keynote address as the chief guest at the inauguration of the 15th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas, announced that for the first time, Mauritius will organise Bhojpuri Festival in 2020.
  • The festival will provide a platform to promote the language at international level as well as strengthen inter cultural ties.
  • The country will also host Bhagwad Gita Mahotsav in partnership with the Haryana government in February 2019.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa to Visit India for Republic Day 2019

  • South African President Cyril Ramaphosa will be on two day visit to India on 25-26 January, 2019.
  • He has been invited as a State Guest of Honour for Republic Day 2019 by the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
  • The visiting President Ramaphosa will be accompanied by the First Lady Dr. Tshepo Motsepe, and a high level delegation.
  • This is the first visit to India by President Ramaphosa as Head of State.
  • He is the second President of South Africa after President Nelson Mandela to be the Chief Guest at the Republic Day. 

ICC Awards 2018 announced; Kohli named captain of both ICC Test, ODI Teams of the Year

  • International Cricket Council’s (ICC) has announced its 2018 awards and the team for 2018 (both ODI and Test teams).
  • Virat Kohli has been named the captain of both ICC Test Team of the Year and ICC ODI Team of the Year. Other Indian players to be named in ICC Test Team of the Year are: Rishabh Pant and Jasprit Bumrah; while in ICC ODI Team of the Year are Rohit Sharma, Kuldeep Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah.
  • The ICC Awards for 2018 are: 
    • Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy for ICC Cricketer of the Year: Virat Kohli 
    • ICC Test Player of the Year: Virat Kohli
    • ICC ODI Player of the Year: Virat Kohli
    • ICC Emerging Player of the Year: Rishabh Pant

    • ICC Fan’s Moment of the Year: India winning U19 World Cup

Former India hockey player Raghbir Bhola passes away

  • Former India hockey player Raghbir Singh Bhola has passed away aged 92. He was a two-time Olympic medallist.
  • In 2000, he was honoured with the Arjuna Award for his achievements in hockey.
