Government Constitutes CEA Led Panel to Explore Prepaid Payments by DISCOMS to Power Generators

  • The government has constituted a committee led by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) to look into problems of delayed prepaid payments by state electricity distribution companies to power plants.
  • The committee will comprise of Chairmen of distribution companies of Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra, representatives from Union power ministry and power associations.
  • The committee will study working capital cycles of power distribution companies and generation companies and identify gaps contributing to stress in the sector.
  • It will also study the regulations with respect to payment mechanisms and transactions across power sector value chain and suggest a mechanism for the prepaid system of transactions.

Manoj Sinha Launches Rs 5 Postal Stamp on Kumbh in Prayagraj

  • The Minister of State for Telecommunications (Independent Charge), Manoj Sinha released a Commemorative Stamp value of Rs 5 on KUMBH MELA Prayag Raj in Uttar Pradesh on February 2, 2019.
  • He also released an Album and A Book ‘Prayag Raj: A city of Sacrifice, Journey of Philately’.

PM Modi Dedicates 2 Railway Projects in West Bengal

  • The Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited West Bengal on February 2, 2019.
  • He dedicated to the nation Railway electrification of 294- km-long Andal- Sainthia-Pakur-Malda and Khana- Sainthia Sections in West Bengal.
  • The electrification of this section will ease transportation of coal and stone chips to North and North East India in a seamless manner.
  • He also inaugurated the 20 km long Hijli- Narayangarh third line.
  • PM also addressed public rally in Thakurnagar and Durgapur.

Maharashtra Government launches “Tejshri Financial Services”

  • Maharashtra Government has announced a new scheme named “Tejshri Financial Services” to provide financial assistance to the poorest of the poor, debt victims and the families dependent on women under the human development program.
  • Under the scheme Rs 10,000 loan per person to the poorest of the poor families will be given. A financial assistance of Rs. 20,000 for repayment of loans to the self-help group and the working capital of Rs 2 lakh will be made available to the women entrepreneurs in the field of business of social enterprises.
  • Rs. 68 crore 53 lakh will be distributed in three years under this program. 

Ministry of Finance to merge two regional rural banks in Tamil Nadu

  • The Ministry of Finance has decided to merge two regional rural banks in the state of Tamil Nadu and the new entity will be named as Tamil Nadu Grama Bank. The merger will be effective from April 01, 2019.
  • The banks to be merged are Pallavan Grama Bank (Sponsored by Indian Bank) and Pandyan Grama Bank (Sponsored by Indian Overseas Bank).
  • Indian Bank will be the sponsor bank of the new entity named Tamil Nadu Grama Bank. The headquarters of the bank will be in Salem. 

Rishi Kumar Shukla appointed CBI Director

  • Rishi Kumar Shukla has been appointed the new Chief/Director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for a tenure of two years.
  • Earlier he was the chief of Madhya Pradesh police.
  • He has been appointed in place of Alok Kumar Verma, who was removed from the post of CBI Director on January 10. M Nageswara Rao was the interim cheif in this period.
  • The appointment comes after two meeting of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led selection committee held on January 24 and February 1.

Qatar beat Japan 3-1 to Win Maiden AFC Asian Cup 2019

  • The 2019 AFC Asian Cup was the 17th edition of the international men’s football championship of Asia organised by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC).
  • It was held in the United Arab Emirates from 5 January to 1 February 2019.
  • The tournament was won by Qatar after defeating Japan 3–1 in the final. 
  • This is the first time that Qatar has won the tournament, as against the 4 times winners Japan.
  • With this win, Qatar earned the right to participate in the 2021 FIFA Confederations Cup.

Vani Kapoor Becomes 1st Indian to Win Australian LPGA Card

  • Indian Golfer Vani Kapoor has become the first Indian player to earn a card for the Australian Ladies PGA Tour (LPGA) 2019.
  • She finished tied-12th with three others in the first-ever Australian LPGA Qualifying Tournament at the Ballarat Golf Club, Australia, to secure the rights.
  • Out of 81 participants in Qualifying Tournament, the top 20 earned playing rights on the Australian LPGA.

Former Planning Commission Member and Ex-IIMC Director Hiten Bhaya Passes Away

  • Hiten Bhaya, the former Planning Commission member and ex-director of IIMC passed away on February 1, 2019. Bhaya was 98.
  • He was a member of the Planning Commission in the Rajiv Gandhi government.
  • He had also served as director of the Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC) and chairman of Hindustan Steel.

World Wetlands Day : February 2

  • World Wetlands Day is observed annually on February 2.
  • The day is celebrated to mark the date of the adoption of the Convention on Wetlands on February 2, 1971.
  • World Wetlands Day was first celebrated in 1997.
  • The international theme for World Wetlands Day 2019 is ‘Wetlands and Climate Change’.
