‘Voter Turnout’ app launched by Election Commission

  • The Election Commission (EC) has launched a mobile application named “Voter Turnout” that provides near-realtime availability of voter turnout during elections across India.
  • The app shows the state-wise and constituency-wise data regarding voter turnout in the ongoing Lok Sabha elections.
  • After the elections are over, the voter turnout data would be verified and final data would be made available on the app.

RBI signs SoC to the FX Global Code

  • The Reserve Bank of India has signed a Statement of Commitment (SoC) to the FX Global Code (“Code”).
  • The FX Global Code (known as Code) represents a set of principles generally recognized as good
    practice in the wholesale foreign exchange market (“FX Market”).
  • As per the SoC, RBI has confirmed that it acts as a Market Participant as defined by the Code and is committed to conducting its FX Market activities (“Activities”) in a manner consistent with the principles of the Code.
  • The “Code” is based on six principles, namely:
    • Ethics
    • Governance
    • Execution
    • Information Sharing
    • Risk Management and Compliance
    • Confirmation and Settlement Processes.
  • The Code is currently being implemented globally by the Global FX Committee (GFXC) in coordination with the Local FX Committee (LFXC) in each jurisdiction. It was developed by a partnership between central banks and Market Participants from 16 jurisdictions around the globe.

INS Kolkata and INS Shakti to participate in International Fleet Review in China

  • Two Indian Navy warships, namely the destroyer INS Kolkata and tanker INS Shakti, will participate in the International Fleet Review (IFR) to be held at Qingdao, China on April 23.
  • The celebrations are being held by the Chinese as part of the 70th Anniversary of the People’s Liberation Army’s (PLA) Navy.
  • IFR is a parade of naval ships, aircraft and submarines organised by nations to promote goodwill, strengthen cooperation and showcase their organisational capabilities.
  • The second IFR was conducted by India off Visakhapatnam in February 2016.

US Navy’s Annual CARAT Exercise Series Begins with Sri Lanka in Indian Ocean

  • The United States Navy began its 25th annual Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training (CARAT) exercise series on April 19, 2019 at Hambantota Port in Sri Lanka.
  • The Sri Lanka Armed Forces will join U.S. Sailors and Marines in the week-long 2019 CARAT exercise, focused on conducting training on building interoperability and sharing best practices.
  • CARAT is a series of annual bilateral military exercises conducted by the United States Pacific Fleet with several member nations of ASEAN in Southeast Asia.
  • The exercise is held between the U.S. Navy, U.S. Marine Corps and the armed forces of partner nations to strengthen partnerships between regional navies and enhances maritime security cooperation throughout the Indo-Pacific.

India and Russia to hold ‘Varuna’ naval exercise off Goa coast

  • India and France will conduct their largest ever naval exercise ‘Varuna’ in May 2019. The objective of this exercise is to expand the strategic partnership between India and France in the Indian Ocean region (IOR).
  • Varuna Naval Exercise will take place off Goa and Karwar from 1 May 2019.

Gagandeep Kang becomes First Indian Woman to be Elected Fellow of the Royal Society

  • The Royal Society of London has announced the list of 51 eminent scientists who have been elected to its fellowship in the year 2019.
  • India’s Gagandeep Kang has become the first Indian woman to be elected to the Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS), in 359-year history of the prestigious scientific academy.
  • 56-year-old Dr Kang is working with the Translational Health Science and Technology Institute, Faridabad.
  • Fellowship of the Royal Society (FRS) is an award granted by Royal Society of London to individuals who have made a ‘substantial contribution to the improvement of natural knowledge, including mathematics, engineering scienceand medical science.
  • Royal Society is the oldest national scientific institution in the world based in London, UK

Chandigarh to host Asian Billiards, Snooker Championships

  • The 18th Asian Billiards, 20th U-21 Asian Snooker and the 3rd Ladies Asian Snooker Championships  will take place at Sector 19 Community Centre in Chandigarh, India, from April 27 to May 3, 2019.
  • The week-long tournament will be organised by the Punjab Billiards and Snooker Association (PBSA) under the aegis of the Asian Confederation of Billiard Sports (ACBS) and Billiards and Snooker Federation of India (BSFI).
  • Players from 15 Asian countries will participate in the event.

Finance Minister of Pakistan Asad Umar Resigns

  • Pakistan’s Finance Minister Asad Umar abruptly quit the Cabinet on April 18, 2019.
  • Umar took the decision as he was dissatisfied with Prime Minister Imran Khan’s desire for Umar to take the Energy Minister portfolio instead of Finance as part of a Cabinet reshuffle.

Soumeylow Boubeye Maiga Resigns as Prime Minister of Mali

  • The Prime Minister of Mali, Soumeylou Boubeye Maiga has resigned along with his entire government on April 18, 2019 over its failure to handle violence in the West African country.
  • The 74-year-old Maiga was serving as the PM of the West African country since December 2017.

Alan Garcia, Former President of Peru, Passes Away

  • The former President of Peru, Alan García, passed away after shooting himself. He was 69.
  • Garcia shot himself as police officers were preparing to arrest him over over bribery allegations related to the Odebrecht scandal
  • He had served as President of Peru from 1985 to 1990 and 2006 to 2011.
