PM Modi Visits Maharashtra to Unveil Multiple Projects

Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi visited Yavatmal and Dhule in Maharashtra on 16 February 2019 to unveil multiple projects.

At Yavatmal

  • During his visit to Yavatmal, PM inaugurated Eklavya Model Residential School at Nanded
  • Handed over the keys to selected beneficiaries for the e-Gruh Pravesh of houses constructed under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY).
  • Flagged off Ajni (Nagpur)- Pune Train via video link
  • Laid foundation stone of roads under central road fund (CRF)
  • Distributed certificates/ cheques under Maharashtra State Rural Livelihoods Mission (MSRLM) to women SHGs.

At Dhule:

  • In Dhule, he inaugurated Lower Panazara medium Project under Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchan Yojana (PMKSY)
  • Flagged-off Bhusaval- Bandra Khandesh Express Train. It is an overnight train for direct connectivity between Mumbai and Bhusawal. 
  • Inaugurated Jalgaon-Udhana Doubling and electrification Rail Project.
  • Laid foundation stone of –
    • Sulwade Jamphal Kanoli Lift Irrigation Scheme
    • Dhule City Water Supply Scheme under AMRUT
    • Dhule-Nardana railway Line and Jalgaon – Manmad 3rd Railway Line.

India revokes MFN status accorded to Pakistan

  • India on February 15, 2019 revoked the most favoured nation (MFN) status in trade from  Pakistan. This comes in response to the terror attack in Pulwama in Jammu and Kashmir that claimed the lives of 40 CRPF personnel.
  • Pakistan was given the status of most favoured nation (MFN) in the year 1996. The removal of the same will allow India to put higher import duties on Pakistani goods.
  • What is MFN Status: Most Favoured Nation is a treatment accorded to a trade partner to ensure non-discriminatory trade between two countries vis-a-vis other trade partners.

First of Its Kind Agromet Forecasting Centre Inaugurated at Dharwad, Karnataka

  • India’s first Agromet Forecasting and Research Centre has been established at Farmers Knowledge Centre in the University of Agricultural Sciences (UAS) in Dharwad, Karnataka.
  • Inaugurated by Union Minister Harsha Vardhan, the North Karnataka Agromet Forecasting and Research Centre (NKAFC) will benefit nearly 25 lakh farmers.
  • The new Weather forecasting centre will help farmers prepare fields for sowing, harvesting, protecting crops from pest attacks, drought and floods.

World Employment and Social Outlook Trends 2019 Report Released by ILO

  • The International Labour Organization (ILO) released a report titled World Employment and Social Outlook Trends 2019.
  • According to the report, the global unemployment rates is anticipated to fall to 4.9% in 2019 while hold steady into 2020.  
  • This report provides an overview of global and regional trends in employment, unemployment, labour force participation, productivity, as well as employment status, informal employment and working poverty. It also examines income and social developments, and provides an indicator of social unrest.
  • Findings of the Report
    • Global unemployment among young people (between 15-24) stood at 11.8 percent, higher than other age brackets.
    • The gender gap in labour force participation remained large in 2018 with only 48 percent of women employed in the labour force, compared to 75 percent of men. 
    • Decent work deficits are widespread – A majority of the 3.3 billion people employed globally in 2018 experienced a lack of material well-being, economic security, equal opportunities or scope for human development
    • More than 170 million people are unemployed despite the continued decrease in the global unemployment rate.
    • While the number of jobs was increasing worldwide, the quality of those jobs was not necessarily improving
    • Labour underutilization is more prevalent among women

IAF carries out Exercise Vayu Shakti-2019 in Pokhran, Rajasthan

  • The Indian Air Force on February 16, 2019 carried out the Exercise Vayu Shakti-2019 involving almost all variants of its fighter jets and attack helicopters, in a fire power demonstration in Polhran, Rajasthan.
  • In the Vayu Shakti exercise, the IAF showcased fire power capability of indigenously-developed platforms like Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas, Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) and efficacy of the Akash surface-to-air missile and Astra air-to-air missile.

Hina Jaiswal becomes first woman flight engineer of IAF

  • Flight Lieutenant Hina Jaiswal has become the first woman flight engineer to be inducted into the Indian Air Force.
  • A Flight Engineer is the member of an aircraft’s flight crew who monitors and operates its complex aircraft systems requiring a specialised skill set.
  • Till last year, the Flight Engineer branch was exclusively the men’s domain.

Saina wins 83rd Senior Badminton Nationals; Sourabh Verma wins in Mens Single

  • The 83rd Yonex Sunrise Senior Badminton National Championship was held in Guwahati. The winners of the event is:
    • Women’s Single: Saina Nehwal defeated P V Sindhu
    • Men’s Single: Sourabh Verma defeated Lakshya Sen

Legendary WWE Hall of Famer, Pedro Morales, Passes Away

  • The Puerto Rican professional wrestling champion, Pedro Morales passed away battling with Parkinson’s Disease. He was 76.
  • He was the first Hispanic champion of the WWF and the first Triple Crown winner in history. 
  • He was inducted into the WWF Hall of Fame in 1995.
  • He retired from professional wrestling in 1987. He also holds the record for most days as Intercontinental Champion
