PM Modi Unveils Statue of Sir Chhotu Ram in Haryana

  • The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, visited Sampla, Rohtak in Haryana on October 9.
  • He unveiled a 64-feet-tall statue of peasant leader Deenbandhu Sir Chhotu Ram.
  • Sir Chhotu Ram, who was born on November 24, 1881, was regarded as a messiah of peasants and was instrumental in empowering farmers in pre-Independence era and getting pro-farmers law enacted. He had fought for farmers’ rights during the British rule. 
  • Renowned sculptor and Padma Bhushan-recipient Ram Vanji Sutar sculpted the 64-foot-tall statue. 
  • He also unveiled a plaque to mark the laying of Foundation Stone of the Rail Coach Refurbishing Karkhana, Sonepat.

IAF Launches Mobile Health app ‘MedWatch’  for citizens of India on Air Force Day 

  • On the occasion of 86th anniversary, the Indian Air Force has launched an innovative mobile health App named ‘MedWatch’.
  • The app is conceived by the doctors of IAF and developed in house by Directorate of Information Technology (DIT) with ZERO financial outlay.
  • ‘MedWatch’ is the first mobile health app in the three Armed Services and will provide correct, Scientific and authentic health information to airwarriors and all citizens of India.

IMF projects India’s growth at 7.3% in 2018, 7.4% in 2019

  • The International Monetary Fund (IMF) in its World Economic Outlook (WEO) for 2019,  forecasted a growth rate of 7.3% for India in the year 2018 while 7.4% the for 2019 due to the recent increase in oil prices and the tightening of global financial conditions.
  • In 2017, the growth rate was 6.7%.

Rabindranath Tagore Memorial Auditorium dedicated to people in Sri Lanka

  • The Rabindranath Tagore Memorial Auditorium built with Indian grant assistance of 30 crore Sri Lankan rupees was dedicated to the people of Sri Lanka on October 9.
  • The auditorium, largest in any of the universities in Sri Lanka has 1500 seating capacity.
  • It has been designed by the famous Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa to conform to the philosophy of “Tropical Modernism”. 
  • The auditorium named after Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore is a symbol of cultural links with India and example of India-Sri Lanka people-oriented development partnership.

Pak Successfully test-fires N-capable Ghauri ballistic missile

  • The Army Strategic Forces Command of Pakistan conducted a successful test-firing of Ghauri ballistic missile to test its operational and technical readiness
  • The missile is capable of carrying both conventional and nuclear warheads up to a distance of 1,300 kilometers.

Google to Shut Down Google+ Over Security Flaw

  • Google has announced plans to shut down the consumer version of its social network Google+ citing low user engagement.
  • The other major reason behind is a “bug” that potentially exposed user data to hundreds of external developers that included names, email addresses, occupations, genders and ages.
  • At least two US states and two European Union member states are now investigating a breach at Alphabet’s Google that may have exposed private profile data.
  • The Google announcement indicated that Google+ would be fully shut down by August 2019, to allow users to download and migrate their information.
  • US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley has announced to resign from the post. She will leave her post by the end of 2018.
  • She was elected as the 29th U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations in 2017

Senegal to host 2022 Youth Olympic Games

  • The 2022 Summer Youth Olympics will be held in Dakar, Senegal
  • Senegal will be the first African country to host the event.
  • 2022 Summer Youth Olympic Games will be the fourth edition of the event.

World Post Day: October 9

  • World Post day happens each year on October 9, the anniversary of the Universal Postal Union (UPU), which started in 1874 in Switzerland.
  • October 9th was first declared World Post Day at the 1969 UPU Congress in Tokyo, Japan. 
  • designed to highlight the importance of postal services around the world and to raise awareness of them and their contributions to society and the global economy.
  • The theme for 2018 is ‘Imagine you are a letter travelling through time. What message do you wish to convey to your readers?’

Well-known Malayalam poet M N Paloor passes away

  • Well-known Malayalam poet M N Paloor passed away at his residence at Kovoor in Kozhikode due to age-related ailments. He was 86-year old.
  • Paloor received the Sahitya Akademi Award for his autobiography ‘Kathayillathavante Katha’ in 2013. He also won the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award in 1983 for his collection ‘Kalikalam’.
