PM renames 3 islands of Andaman Nicobar

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced renaming of three islands of Andaman and Nicobar on the occasion of 75th anniversary of Tricolour hoisting by Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose on December 30, 2018.
    • Ross Island would now be named Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Dweep;
    • Neil Island would be known as Shaheed Dweep; and
    • Havelock Island would be renamed as Swaraj Dweep.
  • The PM also released a commemorative stamp, its first-day cover and a Rs-75 coin on this special day.
  • Mr. Modi visited the Marina Park here and hoisted a national flag on a 150-feet high mast.

NGMA Organises Exhibition ‘Dandi Yatra’ in New Delhi

  • The National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi, Ministry of Culture, Government of India has organised the exhibition ‘Dandi Yatra” in New Delhi.
  • The exhibition is a part of the celebrations of the 150th birth anniversary of father of the nation Mahatma Gandhi.
  • It will showcase the unseen drawings of artist Chhaganlal Jadav and also the master works of NGMA’s collection of contemporaneous artists to Gandhi ji like Nandlal Bose,  Upendra Maharathi and Ram kinkar Baij
  • The exhibition will be open for public from 30th December 2018 onwards on all working days except Mondays and National Holidays.

‘Ujjwala Sanitary Napkins’ initiative launched in Odisha

  • Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister, Dharmendra Pradhan has launched ‘Ujjwala Sanitary Napkins’ initiative in Odisha to make Odisha’s 2.25 crore women empowered and self-reliant.
  • The forms a part of CSR initiative of Oil marketing companies (OMC) in Odisha. The OMCs will set up 100 manufacturing units at the Common Service Centres (CSC) at an estimated cost of Rs 2.94 crore.
  • The initiative is aimed to educate women on female hygiene and health, improve accessibility to low cost eco-friendly sanitary pads and boost rural employment and economy.

Sports Ministry Sets Rs 100 Cr for funding athletes under TOPS: DGSAI

  • The Ministry of Sports has earmarked Rs. 100 crore for funding the athletes under the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) ahead of 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.
  • The scheme was launched in September 2014 to provide financial assistance to potential Olympic medal winners.
  • The athletes were also given financial assistance to prepare for Commonwealth Games and Asian Games under the scheme.
  • It will also nurture future sporting talent by supporting a group of athletes who are potential medal winner in 2024 and 2028 Olympic Games.

RBI Permits Banks To Continue Liquidity Support to NBFCs Until March 31

  • The Reserve Bank of India has decided to extend the relaxation offered to banks for offering liquidity support to non bank lenders – NBFCs and HFCs – up to March 31, 2019.
  • Earlier, this facility was available till December 31, 2018.
  • It had allowed banks to use government securities equal to their outstanding credit to non-bank lenders- NBFCs and home financiers – over and above their outstanding credit to them as on October 19, to be used to meet liquidity coverage ratio (LCR) requirements.

Anindita to get National Nritya Shiromani Award 2019

  • Anindita Neogy Anaam will be honoured with the National Nritya Shiromani award 2019 for promoting the dance form across the world.
  • She is a US-based Kathak exponent.
  • The award would be conferred on her in Cuttack on the opening day of the 10th Cuttack Mahotsav: International Dance and Music festival in Cuttack on January 2

Djokovic wins Mubadala World Tennis Chamionship

  • Novak Djokovic defeated defending champion Kevin Anderson to win the Mubadala World Tennis Championship. This is his 4th Mubadala title.
  • This was the 11th edition of the event and was held in Abu Dhabi, UAE. 

Bengali filmmaker Mrinal Sen dies at 95

  • Noted Bengali filmmaker and Padma Bhushan awardee Mrinal Sen has died at 95.
  • He was known for movies like Bhuvan Shome and Mrigaya.
