PM Modi Lays Foundation Stones for Several Projects in Lucknow

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi has laid the foundation stones for about 81 projects worth Rs 60,000 crore in Lucknow on July 29, 2018. These projects were part of the 1,045 MoUs signed at the Uttar Pradesh Investors’ Summit organised earlier this year.
  • PM Modi was in Lucknow to attend the concluding session of the two-day ‘Transforming Urban Landscape’ convention from July 28-29, 2018.
  • The event marked the third anniversary of the of three key government initiatives related to Urban Development namely Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban); the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation of Urban Transfornation (AMRUT); and the Smart Cities Mission.

PM Modi Lays Foundation Of Mobile Open Exchange Zone At Noida

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation of India’s first Mobile Open Exchange Zone (MOX) at World Trade Centre, Noida during a ground breaking ceremony in Lucknow on July 29.
  • The Uttar Pradesh government had earlier this year signed an MoU with World Trade Center, Noida, to develop a ‘tech zone’ as a nucleus of the Mobile Open Exchange Zone (MOX).
  • MoX@Techzone is a dedicated ecosystem for the mobile industry that will provide an integrated platform to manufacturers, research and other allied industries.

Government constitutes High Level Empowered Committee to Address Stressed Thermal Power Projects

  • The government has decided to set up a high level empowered committee headed by cabinet secretary P K Sinha to revive stressed thermal power projects.
  • The committee will also have representatives from the Ministry of Railways, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Power, Ministry of Coal and the Banks having major exposure to the power sector.
  • The Committee would look into the various issues to resolve them and maximise the efficiency of investment for revival of stressed assets so as to avoid such investments becoming NPA.

Anil Kumar Chawla appointed as FOC-in-Chief of Southern Naval

  • Vice Admiral Anil Kumar Chawla has been appointed as the next Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Southern Naval Command.
  • He would be taking over from Vice Admiral AR Karve, who would be superannuating on July 31.

Unified Commanders’ Conference (UCC) 2018 to be held at New Delhi

  • The two day Unified Commanders’ Conference (UCC) for the year 2018 will be held on 30th & 31st Jul 2018 at New Delhi.
  • The Annual Conference provides a platform for discussions at the Apex Level on all ‘Joint Issues’ amongst the three Services & Ministry of Defence and enables stock taking of the previous year and planning the way ahead for the next year.
  • During the conference, under the chairmanship of the Chief of Integrated Staff (CISC), a large number of Tri Services issues would be deliberated thoroughly to arrive at solution to challenges faced and to evolve plans for the future.

Amul awarded marketer of year

  • Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation Ltd. (GCMMF), the marketers of the popular Amul brand of milk and dairy products, was awarded the ‘Marketer of the Year’ award by the International Advertising Association of India (IAAI).
  • The International Advertising Association of India awarded RS Sodhi, the managing director (MD), GCMMF with the ‘Best Marketer of the Year’ in Mumbai.

Pradip Chowdhury to be conferred with Mohun Bagan Ratna

  • Kolkata’s football club Mohun Bagan presented the club’s award.

7 Indian Athletes named by AAA for IAAF Continental Cup

  • The Asian Athletics Association (AAA) has named seven Indian athletes to represent Asia-Pacific Team in the International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) Continental Cup to be held in Czech Republic’s Ostrava on September 8-9.
  • Based on current IAAF world rankings the selected players are:
    • Neeraj Chopra (Javelin), 
    • Muhammed Anas (400m), 
    • Jinson Johnson (800m)
    • Arpinder Singh (Triple Jump)
    • Hima Das (400m)
    • P.U.Chitra (1500m)
    • Sudha Singh (3000m Steeplechase)
  • The IAAF Continental Cup, was founded in 2010 and is contested every four years. Four-teams comprising best athletes from Africa, Americas, Asian-Pacific and Europe will participate in the competition.

Rohan Bopanna launches fitness business ‘Cardio Tennis’

  • Professional tennis player Rohan Bopanna has launched India’s first sports -inspired fitness form called Cardio Tennis (CT) in Bengaluru. 
  • The high-energy fitness regime combines the features of the game of tennis with cardiovascular exercise, curated for a group over music. 
  • Harsha Thimmaiah, director of CT (India), said, “A session of CT runs for about 50 minutes where participants can expect to burn 500-600 calories on an average. One also need not be a tennis player to join this workout.” Each class costs Rs 400. 

Sourabh Verma lifts Russian Open Badminton trophy

  • Ace Indian shuttler Sourabh Verma defeated Japan’s Koki Watanabe to win the Russian Open Badminton trophy at Vladivostok.
  • However, in Mixed Doubles, the pair of Rohan Kapoor and Kuhoo Garg, lost in the Final against the Russian-Korean team of Vladimir Ivanov and Min Kyung Kim 19-21 17-21 to settle for a runners-up finish.

Indian wrestlers win 10 medals at Yasar Dogu International

  • Indian wrestlers returned with 10 medals, including seven by women, at the Yasar Dogu International in Istanbul, Turkey.
  • Bajrang Punia won his second consecutive international gold while Sandeep Tomar had to be content with a silver medal. In the women’s competition, Pinki was the lone gold medallist in the 55kg category.

International Tiger Day: July 29

  • The Global Tiger Day, often called International Tiger Day, is held annually on 29 July to raise awareness for tiger conservation. It was created in 2010 at the Saint Petersburg Tiger Summit.
  • The main purpose of the International Tiger Day is to increase awareness on tiger populations throughout the world as well as the challenges and successes tiger conservationists face today.
