Indian Railways Launches “Mission Satyanishtha” a Program on Ethics in Public Governance

  • Indian Railways organized a programme on Ethics in Public Governance and Launched “Mission Satyanishtha” in New Delhi. 
  • Mission Satyanishtha” launched on 27th July 2018 aims at sensitizing all railway employees about the need to adhere to good ethics and to maintain high standards of integrity at work. 
  • Sh. Piyush Goyal, Minister of Finance & Corporate Affairs, Railways & Coal, administered the oath to the officers and supervisors at the programme.
  • The objectives of the Mission are:
    • To train every employee to understand the need and value of ethics in Personal and Public life.
    • To deal with ethical dilemmas in life and Public Governance.
    • To help understand the policies of Indian Railways on ethics and integrity and the employee’s role in upholding the same.
    • To develop inner governance through tapping inner resources.

Srikrishna Committee Suggests Amendments in Aadhaar Act for Data Protection

  • The Justice B.N. Srikrishna Committee submitted the long-awaited data-protection bill officially titled ‘Personal Data Protection Bill, 2018 on 27 July to the IT Ministry for review.
  • The Bill aims to protect the digital rights of Indian citizens and addresses issues such as consent, protecting children’s rights in the digital age and at empowering citizens to fight for their digital rights.
  • The Committee has suggested amendments to various laws including the Aadhaar Act to provide for imposition of penalties on data fiduciaries and compensations to data principals for violations of the data protection law.
  • The data protection law will set up a Data Protection Authority (DPA), an independent regulatory body responsible for the enforcement and implementation of the law.
  • The 10-member committee on data protection law was set up in August 2017 under the chairmanship of the retired Supreme Court judge.

IRDAI constitutes committee to examine motor third party insurance pricing

  • Insurance regulator IRDAI has constituted a 16-member committee to examine motor third party insurance pricing aspects and make recommendations on the premium rates for 2019-20.
  • P.J. Joseph will be the chairman of the committee.

Karnataka tops in renewable energy generation : IEEFA report

  • The Indian state of Karnataka has become the new national leader in renewable energy generation, concludes a report published today by the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis.
  • Karnataka had a total of 12.3 gigawatts (GW) of renewable capacity installed as of March 2018.
  • Karnataka surpassed Tamil Nadu to become the leading state in renewable energy generation.

Invest India and UAE Ministry sign MoU for Technological Cooperation

  • A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed between Invest India and the UAE Minister for Artificial Intelligence (AI) for India – UAE Artificial Intelligence Bridge in New Delhi to promote the use of digital technology for better governance.
  • The MoU will boost development across areas like Blockchain, AI and Analytics. It will generate an estimated USD 20 billion in economic benefits during the next decade for both countries. By 2035 AI can potentially add USD 957 billion to the Indian economy.
  • Besides, Minister of Commerce & Industry and Civil Aviation, Suresh Prabhu flagged off the UAE government’s GovHack series “hackathon” technologies startup competition here, which will be held in 8 major cities around the world.
  • The New Delhi challenge will be followed for the rest of the year by Tokyo, Santiago, Jakarta, Washington, London, Berlin and Cairo and will culminate with a $100,000 prize for the winner startup.

India Grants Cheque of 2.1 billion Nepalese Rupee to Nepal

  • Indian government has handed over a cheque of 2.1 billion Nepalese rupee to Nepal towards reimbursement of 1st tranche of housing support to 42,086 Govt of India supported beneficiaries in Nuwakot and Gorkha districts.
  • The cheque was handed over by Indian Ambassador to Nepal Manjeev Singh Puri to Finance Secretary of Nepal Dr. Rajan Khanal in Kathmandu.
  • The financial aid is part of India’s commitment towards Nepal’s post-earthquake reconstruction for which both the countries had signed an MoU worth US$ 100 million grant to support the reconstruction of 50,000 private houses in Nuwakot and Gorkha districts in February 2016.
  • Since March 2018, the Government of India is partnering with United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) for providing Socio-Technical Facilitation to housing beneficiaries in these districts to help them to ensure that their homes comply with Government of Nepal’s earthquake resilient norms.

10TH BRICS Summit Concludes with Johannesburg Declaration

  • The Heads of State and Government of the the 5 BRICS nations met from 25 – 27 July 2018 in Johannesburg, at the 10th BRICS Summit. 
  • The 10th BRICS Summit was held under the theme “BRICS in Africa: Collaboration for Inclusive Growth and Shared Prosperity in the 4th Industrial Revolution”.
  • The Summit concluded with the adoption of Johannesburg Declaration by all the leaders of the BRICS nation by consensus.

India, South Africa Sign three agreements at 10th BRICS Summit

  • India and South Africa signed three agreements following bilateral talks between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa on the sidelines of the 10th BRICS Summit in Johannesburg, South Africa.
  • The 3 Memorandum of Understanding were signed between-
    • -Indian Council of Agricultural Research, New Delhi, India and the Agricultural Research Council, Pretoria, South Africa on Cooperation in Agricultural Research and Education.
    • -Government of the Republic of South Africa and the Government of the Republic of India regarding the Setting up of the “Gandhi Mandela Centre of Specialisation for Artisan Skills” in South Africa.
    • – Indian Space Research Organisation and the South African National Space Agency on Cooperation in the Exploration and uses of Outer Space for Peaceful Purposes.

SoftBank Partners Paytm to Launch Mobile Payments in Japan

  • PayPay Corporation, a joint venture between SoftBank Group Corp. and Yahoo Japan Corporation has partnered with India’s largest payment services provider Paytm to offer smartphone payment services using barcodes (QR Codes) in Japan.
  • The partnership will enable Paytm to expand its digital payments portfolio in Japan. The payments platform will be called PayPay and is likely to be launched in the fall of 2018.
  • The Japanese government which depends highly on cash payment wants to reduce the country’s dependence on cash and raise the cashless payment ratio to 40% by 2025, with a long-term goal of 80%.
  • The payments platform will help SoftBank to leverage Paytm’s technology and expertise in mobile payments to build its mobile payment system and expand mobile payment in Japan.

Ramakanta Rath receives Atibadi Jagannath Das Samman

  • Odia litterateur Ramakanta Rath received Atibadi Jagannath Das Samman, Odisha’s highest literary award, for the year 2018.
  • The award is named after 15th century Odia poet Atibadi Jagannath Das.

Kenya to host 2020 IAAF World U-20 Championships

  • The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) has chosen Nairobi, Kenya as the host city of the 2020 IAAF World Athletics U20 Championships.
  • The IAAF World U20 Championships Nairobi 2020 have been scheduled for July 7-12, 2020.
