Toll-free helpline 14408 launched to address nutrition queries: WCD

  • A toll-free helpline 14408 has been launched by Ministry of Women and Child Development (MWCD) to address queries associated with nutrition and malnutrition.
  • The helpline number has been launched under the Poshan Abhiyan, also called National Nutrition Mission, that aims to bring down stunting of children in the age group of 0-6 years from 38.4 percent to 25 percent by 2022.

PM Modi to Launch FAME India II on September 7

  • The second phase of the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of (Strong) Hybrid and Electric vehicles in India (FAME India) scheme will be launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 7 in New Delhi. The scheme offers incentives for mass adoption of electric vehicles.
  • The phase II of the FAME India scheme spanning for a period of five years has an outlay of Rs 5,500 crore.
  • It will be used to provide subsidies to all types of electric vehicles including two-wheelers, three-wheelers, as well as four-wheelers including taxis, as well as electric buses.
  • The scheme will be unveiled at the inaugural session of the ‘MOVE’ — A Global Mobility Summit to be organised in New Delhi on September 7-8 
  • The first phase of the scheme was initially proposed for two years till March 31, 2017 but was extended twice for six months up to March 31, 2018. 

Government announces Regulations for Drones

  • The Ministry of Civil Aviation has announced the Civil Aviation Requirements (CAR) for civil use of Remotely Piloted Aircraft System (RPAS) commonly known as drones.
  • The Drone Regulations 1.0 will be effective from December 1, 2018 and will enable the safe and commercial usage of drones.
  • The has been formed by the Drone Task Force under the chairmanship of the Minister of State Shri Jayant  Sinha. The task force will further provide draft recommendations for Drone Regulations 2.0.

MoU Signed for Skill Development of Arogyamitras Under the PMJAY

  • To ensure effective rollout and continued quality implementation and provide capacity building for the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana(PMJAY), a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) and National Health  Agency (NHA) in New Delhi.
  • Under the MoU, NSDC will ensure quality training of Arogyamitra through its network of Skill Development Centres functioning under PMKVY and Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Kendras(PMKK).
  • These Arogyamitras will be certified by health care sector skill council, the body notified as non-statutory body for health sector under the aegis of NSDC.

Sports Policy For Steel Ministry CPSEs Launched

  • Union Minister of Steel, Chaudhary Birender Singh, unveiled the Corporate Sports Policy for Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSEs) under the Ministry of Steel. The policy will provide a framework for promotion of sports by Steel Ministry CPSEs.
  • CPSEs, under the Steel Ministry, will discharge their responsibility through infrastructural and institutional support for talent spotting, scholarships, training and coaching to groom medal aspirants for the Olympic Games.

Vietnam to host 3rd Indian Ocean conference

  • The third edition of Indian Ocean Conference will begin on August 27 at Hanoi,Vietnam. 
  • The theme of the two- day conference will focus on ‘Building Regional Architectures’, particularly with regards to trade and commerce, security and governance.
  • This year’s conference will see 43 countries as participants while 28 ministers and officials are set to address the event. Indian External Affairs Minister, Sushma Swaraj along with other dignitaries will inaugurate the conference on August 27.

India – Kenya Joint Trade Committee Meeting Held in Nairobi

  • The 8th meeting of India-Kenya Joint Trade Committee was held in Nairobi, Kenya, from 22nd– 25th August, 2018.
  • The meeting was co-chaired by Union Minister of Commerce & Industry and Civil Aviation, Suresh Prabhuand Mr. Peter Munya, Cabinet Secretary (Minister) for Industry, Trade and Cooperatives, Government of Kenya.
  • A meeting of India-Kenya Joint Business Council was also held on the side-lines of the Joint Trade Committee meeting. 

GAIL Launches Online Portal for Common Carrier Capacity Booking

  • The Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas & Skill Development & Entrepreneurship Shri Dharmendra Pradhan has launched an online portal “www.gailonline,com” for enabling easy, efficient and transparent booking of Common carrier capacity by marketing entities and consumers for natural gas transmission services under GAIL’s pipelines.
  • The online portal is the first of its kind in the natural gas sector of the country, to provide gas consumers the facility to register pipeline capacity bookings online and endeavours to continue the practice of serving on first come-first served basis.

SBI Changes Names, IFSC codes of 1295 Branches Post Merger

  • SBI has published a list of new branch codes as well as the IFSC codes of 1295 branches after the merger of its associate banks.
  • The merger of six associate banks and Bhartiya Mahila Bank (BMB) with State Bank of India (SBI) came to effect from April 1, 2017.
  • SBI ranks at 53 position among the top banks globally in terms of assets. As on June 30, 2018 the total assets of the bank stood at Rs 33.45 lakh crore.
  • The merger of associates and BMB had helped SBI reduce 1,805 branches and rationalise 244 administrative offices.

Indian economy to grow at 7.4% in FY19: NCAER

  • Economic policy think-tank NCAER has retained India’s growth forecast for the current fiscal at 7.4 percent for 2018-19.

‘Meri Fasal-Mera Byora’ portal launched in Haryana for crop registration

  • Haryana Government has launched the ‘Meri Fasal-Mera Byora’ portal / Fasal e-Soochna portal in the state.
  • Farmers will be able to register the details of their kharif crops on this portal from September 15, 2018.
  • The portal will provide information related to sown kharif crops and to provide the eligible farmers benefit of various government schemes.

Sahitya Akademi receives FICCI publishing award for Hindi

  • The Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) gave out its “Book of the Year” publishing award to Sahitya Akademi, India’s National Academy of Letters, for its title “Nagaphani Van Ka Itihas”.
  • The award was given out in the Hindi category. It has originally been written by Tamil writer-poet Vairmuthu Ramasamy.It was translated in Hindi by H. Balasubramaniam. The book details the history of Indian farmers from the year India got independence.

  • Ndaba Mandela, the grandson of anti-apartheid revolutionary Nelson Mandela, has penned a memoir “Going to the Mountain”, sharing the story of his coming-of-age alongside South Africa’s rebirth.

Goldman Sachs appoints Prachi Mishra as chief India economist

  • Global investment bank Goldman Sachs has appointed Prachi Mishra as the managing director and chief India economist.

Sebastian Vettel wins Belgian Grand Prix F1

  • Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel beat title rival Lewis Hamilton in the Belgian Grand Prix.
  • Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) was second while Max Verstappan (Red Bull) was third.
