RBI constitutes Expert Committee on Economic Capital Framework with Dr. Bimal Jalan as Head

  • The Reserve Bank of India has constituted an Expert Committee to review the extant Economic Capital Framework of the RBI.
  • The Chairman of the Expert Committee is Dr. Bimal Jalan (Former Governor of RBI). The commitee has 6 members including the Chairman.
  • Other members of the committee are: Dr. Rakesh Mohan (Vice- Chairman); Shri Bharat Doshi; Shri Sudhir Mankad; Shri Subhash Chandra Garg; Shri N.S. Vishwanathan
  • In the meeting held on November 19, 2018 between RBI and Central Government it was decided that such a committee would be formed.
  • The Expert Committee will submit its report within a period of 90 days from the date of its first
    meeting.
  • The committee would: 
    • review status, need and justification of various provisions, reserves and buffers
      presently provided for by the RBI
    • review global best practices followed by the central banks in making assessment
      and provisions for risks which central bank balance sheets are subject to

Govt institutes annual awards to recognise excellent work in disaster management

  • The Centre has instituted annual awards titled ‘Subhash Chandra Bose Aapda Prabandhan Puraskaar’ to recognise the excellent work done by individuals and institutions in the country in the field of disaster management.
  • Three eligible institutions and individuals will be given this award annually. If the awardee is an institution, it will be given a certificate and a cash prize of Rs 51 lakh. If the awardee is an individual, the person shall receive a certificate and a cash prize of Rs 5 lakh

HM Rajnath Singh Releases List of Top 10 Performing Police Stations Across The Country

  • Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh released the list of top 10 performing police stations across the nation during the All-India Conference of Director Generals / Inspector Generals of Police in Gujarat.
  • The list was prepared by the Intelligence Bureau (IB) after careful scrutiny of the work done by the police stations 
  • The top 10 Police Stations in India under Ranking of Police Stations for the Year 2017 are:
    1. Kalu (Bikaner, Rajasthan)
    2. Campbell Bay ( A&N Islands)
    3. Farakka (Murshidabad, West Bengal)
    4. Nettapakkam (Puducherry)
    5. Guderi (Karnataka)
    6.  Chopal (Himachal Pradesh)
    7. Lakheri (Rajasthan)
    8. Periyakulam (Tamil Nadu)
    9. Munsyari (Uttarakhand)
    10. Churchorem (Goa)

Laxmikant Kuldakar, Usha Timothy Conferred With Mohammed Rafi Award

  • The late music composer Laxmikant Shantaram Kudalkar and playback singer Usha Timothy has been bestowed with the 2018 Mohammed Rafi Award on December 24, 2018.
  • Kudalkar, of the Laxmikant-Pyarelal duo, was given the Mohammed Rafi Lifetime Achievement Award consisting of Rs 1 lakh and a trophy.
  • Timothy was conferred with the Mohammed Rafi Award worth Rs 51,000
  • The Mohammed Rafi Award is instituted by an NGO headed by Mumbai BJP chief Ashish Shelar.

Sitarist Manju Mehta gets ‘Tansen Samman’

  • Noted sitar player Manju Mehta has been conferred with the ‘Tansen Samman’ for 2018 by the Madhya Pradesh government for her contribution in the field of music.
  • She was given a cash award of Rs 2 lakh and a memento.
  • The Tansen Music Festival is organised every year by the MP culture department in the memory of Tansen, one of the greatest artists in Indian history. It is being held in Gwalior since the past 94 years.

Uttarakhand becomes the first state to launch universal health insurance scheme

  • Uttarakhand Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat launched the ‘Atal Ayushman Uttarakhand Yojana’ on December 25, 2018. With this Uttarakhand has become first state in the country to offer universal health coverage. 
  • Under the scheme, each household in the state will be able to avail medical treatment of up to Rs 5 lakh annually i.e Rs 5 lakh/family/year. 
  • A total of 99 government and 66 private hospitals have been selected under the scheme. It is an extension of PM Modi’s flagship, Ayushman Bharat Scheme and will benefit 22.5 lac families of the state.

Haryana Announces to Rename All Childcare Institutes in State as Jagannath Ashrams

  • Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar has announced to name all the Child Care Institutes being run in the state as ‘Jagannath Ashrams’.

CM Vijay Rupani Lays foundation stones for projects worth Rs 666 Crore in Gujarat

  • Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani e-inaugurated and laid the foundation stones for several projects worth Rs 666 crore across the state on December 25 to mark the completion of one year in office.
  • A total of 5,538 projects related to education sector were launched via video conferencing in all 33 district.
  • The projects include 5,179 newly-built classrooms of schools and colleges, 9 polytechnic college buildings and 350 anganwadi centres.

Japan Announces withdrawal from International Whaling Commission

  • Japan has formally announced on December 26 that it will withdraw from the International Whaling Commission (IWC) with the aim of resuming commercial whaling from July 2019.
  • Japan’s withdrawal will become effective on June 30.
  • However, the country will be allowed commercial whaling in nearby waters and within its exclusive economic zone and will not be allowed to hunt whales commercially in the Antarctic Ocean or in the southern hemisphere
  • Established in 1948, the IWC is an international body, headquartered at Washington D.C., aimed at protecting whales and upholding the “orderly development of the whaling industry.” Japan joined the IWC in 1951.

Padma Shri Awardee Midwife ‘Sulagitti’ Narasamma Passes Away at 98

  • Renowned Indian midwife ‘Sulagitti Narasamma, from Pavagada village, in Tumkur district of Karnataka state passed away suffering from a chronic lung disease. She was 98.
  • She performed more than 15,000 traditional deliveries free of charge over a 70-year period of service in deprived regions of Karnataka with no medical facilities.
  • She was honored with the National Citizen’s award of India in 2012 and the Padma Shri, in 2018
