PM Modi Inaugurates Jharsuguda Airport in Odisha

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the local airport in Jharsuguda, Odisha under the UDAN Scheme. 
  • The Jharsuguda Airport is the second operational airport in the state after the Biju Patnaik International Airport in Bhubaneswar to serve the needs of the people of the state.
  • The airport would act as a junction for neighbouring Raipur and Ranchi and strengthen connectivity.

Andhra Pradesh Tops “Ease of Living Index” Chart

  • Andhra Pradesh has topped the charts among States in terms of “Ease of Living Index” rankings launched by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA).  It was followed by Odisha and Madhya Pradesh. 
  • The three States were awarded the three best performing States under Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) at the National Dissemination Workshop on Ease of Living Index, 2018 in New Delhi.
  • Ease of Living Index is a transformative initiative of the Ministry launched in June 2017 to rank 116 cities (all smart cities and million plus cities) based on the liveability parameters to help the cities assess their liveability vis-à-vis national and global benchmarks.

Microsoft launches “CyberShikshaa” Programme in partnership with DSCI

  • Microsoft India in partnership with Data Security Council of India (DSCI) has launched “CyberShikshaa” Programme to train 1,000 women.
  • “CyberShikshaa” is a three year programme aimed at fostering talent and building a pool of women cybersecurity professionals in India.
  • The CyberShikshaa curriculum will comprise an interactive, four-month training course with a combination of theory, case studies and practical hands on projects and is open to women science graduates between the age of 20-27 years.

BRICS Bank Approves $525 mn Loan for Infra Projects in MP

  • The New Development Bank (NDB) of the BRICS countries has approved a $525-million loan to Madhya Pradesh for infrastructure projects.
  • The total amount approved includes a $350-million loan for the Major District Roads Project II of Madhya Pradesh and $175 million for building and upgrading 350 bridges.
  • The loan will be used by the Indian government for on-lending to the Madhya Pradesh government for rehabilitating major district roads with a total length of about 2,000 km to improve the connectivity of the rural interior with the national and state highway networks

Ibrahim Mohamed Solih Named New President-Elect of Maldives

  • Ibrahim Mohamed Solih defeated Abdulla Yameen in the 2018 Presidential election of Maldives to claim the title. Ibrahim Mohamed Solih won the elections with 134,616 votes. 
  • The 54-year-old Opposition leader belongs to Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).
  • The new President-elect of the Maldives, Ibrahim, is due to take office on 17 November 2018.

India successfully Test Fires Prithvi Defence Vehicle

  • India successfully conducted an interceptor missile test of Prithvi Defence Vehicle (PDV) off the Odisha coast, achieving a major milestone in developing a two-layer Ballistic Missile Defence system.
  • The interceptor was launched from Abdul Kalam Island, earlier known as Wheeler Island of the Integrated Test Range (ITR). 
  • This Prithvi Defence Vehicle (PDV) mission is for engaging the targets in the exo-atmosphere region at an altitude above 50 km of the earth’s atmosphere.

Dominic Thiem wins St. Petersburg Open

  • Dominic Thiem of Austria defeated Slovakia’s Martin Klizan 6-3, 6-1 to win the St. Petersburg Open tennis tournament, his 11th career title and his first on indoor hard court.

Simona Halep Stays No. 1 in WTA Rankings 2018

  • Romania’s Simona Halep maintained the No. 1 spot in the Women’s Tennis Association rankings ahead of Denmark’s Caroline Wozniacki.
  • The current WTA rankings and point scores are as follows:
    • Simona Halep (Romania) 8,061 Points
    • Caroline Wozniacki (Denmark) 5,506
    • Angelique Kerber (Germany) 5,295
    • Caroline Garcia (France) 4,725
    • Petra Kvitova (Czech Republic) 4,585

Rafael Nadal Maintains No. 1 Spot in 2018 ATP Rankings

  • Spain’s Rafael Nadal continued to lead the men’s Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) world singles rankings 2018 with 8,760 points, ahead of Switzerland’s Roger Federer.
  • The current top-10 ATP rankings and point scores are as follows:
    • Rafael Nadal (Spain) 8,760 Points
    • Roger Federer (Switzerland) 6,900
    • Novak Djokovic (Serbia) 6,445
    • Juan Martin del Potro (Argentina) 5,980
    • Alexander Zverev (Germany) 4,890

Former BCCI Chief B.N. Dutt Passes Away

  • Former Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) President B.N. Dutt died at his south Kolkata residence following respiratory ailments. He was 92.
