PM Visits Chhattisgarh; Lays Foundation Stone for Important Infrastructure Projects

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Chhattisgarh on September 22, 2018 where he gifted the tribal belt of the state with several infrastructure projects that will boost connectivity.
  • He laid the foundation stone for the four laning of the Bilaspur Pathrapali  road and the Sargaon Bilaspur road.
  • He also laid the foundation stone for the Pendra Annupur third railway line project.
  • In terms of beneficiaries of various schemes, PM handed over keys of houses built under the PM Awas Yojana.
  • He also gave mobile phones, tractor keys and other certificates under the PM Ujjwala yojana, Mudra Yojana, Saubhagya Yojana, Atal Drishti patra Yojana, Mukhyamantri abadi Patta yojana and Saur urja yojana.

Naropa Festival 2018 concludes with ‘Ladakhi Shondol Dance’ breaking ‘Guinness World Record’

  • The five-day Naropa Festival concluded in Ladakh with a grand ‘Shondol Dance’ performed by as many as 299 Ladakhi women attired in traditional costume breaking the Guinness World Records for being the “Largest Ladakhi Dance”.
  • The Naropa festival is celebrated every 12th year of the Tibetan calendar and is also known as the ‘Kumbh Mela of the Himalayas’.
  • This is the biggest and most prominent Buddhist festival in the world and attracts a large number of tourists across the world.

RBI Shortlists 5 IT Firms to Implement Centralised Information and Management System

  • The Reserve Bank has shortlisted five IT firms for implementation of a centralized information and management system (CIMS) for seamless data collection and validations. These include:
    • Capgemini Technology Services India,
    • IBM India,
    • Infosys,
    • Larsen & Toubro Infotech and
    • Tata Consultancy Services.
  • CIMS will comprise of Data Warehouse (DW) and Data Lake (DL) which would include, seamless data collection from regulated entities by creating system-to-system interface; system driven data validation and data review; flexible and scalable data repository and providing data dissemination platform and centralised analytics platform to facilitate creation of RBI Data Sciences Lab.

BSNL signs deal with SoftBank, NTT to roll out 5G in India

  • State-run telecom firm BSNL has inked a pact with Japan’s Softbank and NTT Communications to roll out 5G internet service and internet of things (IoT) technology in India with special focus on smart cities.
  • Under the agreement with Softbank, BSNL will look at collaborating with the Japanese firm for its satellite constellation which will have around 900 satellites to provide high speed internet services across the globe.
  • BSNL has signed an agreement with Nokia and Cisco as well for developing 5G ecosystem.

Nepal Set to Become First Country to Double Wild Tiger Population

  • According to data issued by WWF, Nepal, it is likely to be the first country in the world to double its tiger population. 
  • On the occasion of National Conservation Day on September 23, Nepal announced that there are now an estimated 235 wild tigers in the country, nearly doubling the baseline of around 121 tigers in 2009. 
  • Nepal conducted its national tiger survey between November 2017 and April 2018 in the transboundary Terai Arc Landscape (TAL), a vast area of diverse ecosystems shared with India. The country is just a few tigers away from achieving the goal of double tiger numbers by 2022.

Japan Lands 2 Robot Rovers on an Asteroid’s Surface

  • The Japanese space agency JAXA successfully landing two unmanned rovers on an asteroid. The rovers are collectively known as MINERVA-II1.
  • The space agency reported that MINERVA-II1 is the world’s first mobile exploration robot to land on the surface of an asteroid.
  • The rovers separated from the Hayabusa2 spacecraft and landed on the asteroid Ryugu.

Indonesia’s Sinisuka Stuns Japan’s Kento Momota to win Men’s singles title in China Open 2018

In Badminton, Indonesia’s Anthony Sinisuka Ginting  beat Japan’s Kento Momota to take the Men’s singles China Open title in Changzhou, China .

International Day of Sign Languages: September 23

  • International Day of Sign Languages is celebrated annually across the world on 23 September along with International Week of the Deaf (September 24 to September 30, 2018).
  • The choice of 23 September is the same date that the World Federation of the Deaf (WFD) was established in 1951. 
  • The theme of International Day of Sign Languages is “With Sign Language, Everyone is Included !”

World Rhino Day: September 22

  • World Rhino Day is celebrated on September 22 every year!
  • This special day provides the opportunity for cause-related organizations, NGOs, zoos, and members of the public to celebrate rhinos in their own unique ways. 
  • World Rhino Day was first planned by World Wildlife Fund-South Africa in 2010.  

Renowned filmmaker Kalpana Lajmi passes away at 64

  • Renowned filmmaker Kalpana Lajmi passed away in Mumbai as she was suffering from a chronic kidney disease and liver failure. She was 64.
  • Lajmi, a director, producer and screenwriter, was known for working on real subjects. She was known for her women-oriented films like “Rudaali”, “Daman”, “Darmiyaan”.
