Important Cabinet Approvals: November 22, 2018

The Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi approved certain MoUs and projects during cabinet meeting on November 22, 2018. These are as follows.

Tajikistan Cooperation on Youth Matters.
Uzbekistan Cooperation in the field of Science, Technology and Innovation
Russia Promotion of science technology between Atal Innovation Mission, India and Fund “Talent and Success”, Russia through exchange of students, teachers, researchers and scientists between both countries. 
Mauritius Promote inclusive sustainable and resilient development in the areas of Consumer Protection & Legal Metrology

PM Modi lays foundation stones of City Gas Distribution projects in 129 districts

  • The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone through video conferencing, to mark the commencement of work for City Gas Distribution(CGD), awarded under the 9th CGD bidding round, at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi. He also launched the 10th CGD bidding round.
  • The work for setting up City Gas Distribution network has started in 129 districts, under the 9th round of CGD bidding. After the 10th round of bidding of CGD, more than 400 districts would be covered under the City Gas Distribution network.

Centre for Science and Environment wins Indira Gandhi Prize for Peace, Disarmament and Development 2018

  • Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) has been awarded with Indira Gandhi Prize for Peace, Disarmament and Development for year 2018. 
  • The award has been given for its pioneering work in the field of environmental education and protection and also for keeping the issue of environmental sustainability at the forefront of national attention and public policy. 
  • Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) is a New Delhi (India)-based independent research and advocacy think tank.

‘India Skills Report 2019’: employability increased from 37% to 47.38% in 5 years

  • India Skills Report 2019 was released  by Wheebox, a Global Talent Assessment Company, PeopleStrong and CII and supported and backed by renowned partners like UNDP, AICTE.
  • It stated that Employability continues to rise thus reaching a new high of 47% this year – An incremental change of almost 2-3 percentage points since last year and a huge change of over 15% points in the past 5 years.
  • According to the nationwide study, the top three states in terms of employability is Andhra Pradesh followed by West Bengal and Delhi. 
  • On gender diversity, the survey says female employability this year has increased to 46% from 38% last year. Male employability score has grown marginally to 48% from 47% last year.
  • It was launched at the 8th CII Global Summit on Skill Development held in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh.

  1. the MOU between the Ministry of Information and Communications of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam and the Ministry of Communications of the Republic of India on cooperation in the field of Communications
  2. the MOU on cooperation between the Department of Foreign Affairs of Provinces of Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Vietnam and the Indian Business Chamber in Vietnam (INCHAM)
  3. the MOU between the Ho Chi Minh National Academy of Politics, Hanoi, Vietnam and the Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, India
  4. Co-operation Agreement between Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Vietnam (VCCI)

5 MoUs With Australia signed

  1. An agreement between the Government of India and the Government of Australia for cooperation in the area of disability and to deliver services to the differently-abled
  2. An agreement between Invest India and Austrade to facilitate bilateral investment
  3. An agreement between the Central Mine Planning and Design Institute, based in Ranchi, and the Commonwealth Scientific and Research Organisation, based in Canberra, to foster scientific collaboration and innovation
  4. An agreement between the Acharya N.G. Ranga Agricultural University, Guntur, and the University of Western Australia, Perth, for cooperation in agricultural research and education
  5. A Joint PhD agreement between the Indraprashta Institute of Information Technology, Delhi, and the Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane

President Kovind also unveiled the bronze statue of Mahatma Gandhi at Parramatta in Sydney, Australia.

Sitharaman inaugurates Sangai Festival of Manipur

  • Union Minister of Defence Nirmala Sitharaman inaugurated the  tourism festival of the State Manipur, Sangai Festival – 2018.
  • Sitharaman was the chief guest at the event. 
  • Sangai festival is an annual cultural festival organised by Manipur Tourism Department every year from November 21 to 30.

12th World Congress on Mountain Medicine begins in Kathmandu

  • 12th World Congress on Mountain Medicine started in Kathmandu,Nepal.
  • The theme of 4 day congress is “Mountain Medicine in the Heart of the Himalayas”.
  • The biennial event mainly focuses on science and research aspects of high altitude medicine. 

Nepal’s largest exhibition ‘ConMac 2018’ begins in Kathmandu

  • Nepal’s largest exhibition on construction equipment and technology “ConMac 2018” today started in Bhaktapur near Kathmandu. 
  • The 3 day mega event is organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) in association with Embassy of India. 

SoftBank appoints Sumer Juneja as head of its Vision Fund India Operations

  • Japan’s SoftBank has announced that Sumer Juneja will head the local arm of its $100-billion Vision Fund.
  • SoftBank also said that it would be opening its first India office, in Mumbai

India gets UN Environment award for combating transboundary environmental crime

  • Wildlife Crime Control Bureau (WCCB), Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Government of India has won the Asia Environment Enforcement Awards, 2018 of for excellent work done by the Bureau in combating transboundary environmental crime. 
  • The award was from United Nations Environment Programme, an agency of the United Nations. 
  • WCCB has been conferred this award in Innovation category. WCCB has adopted innovative enforcement techniques that have dramatically increased enforcement of transboundary environmental crimes in India.

Wasim Jaffer becomes first Indian to touch 11,000-run milestone in Ranji Trophy

  • Veteran first-class cricketer Wasim Jaffer became the first Indian batsman to touch the 11,000-run figure in the Ranji Trophy.
  • Apart from being the highest run-scorer in the Ranji Trophy, Jaffer also has a total of 18,275 runs to his credit in the overall first-class career.
