AYUSH Ministry Celebrates 1st Naturopathy Day on November 18, 2018

  • The AYUSH Ministry observed its first Naturopathy Day across the country on November 18, 2018.
  • As a part of the occasion, AYUSH Minister Shripad Yesso Naik inaugurated the first Naturopathy Day Programme in New Delhi while introducing several schemes to expand the Naturopathy treatment.
  • The event was organised by International Naturopathy Organisation in association with Ministry of Ayush.

14th edition of Children’s theatre festival JashneBachpan Begins in New Delhi

  • The 14th edition of JashneBachpan, a theatre festival for children was inaugurated in New Delhi on November 17. The event has been organised by the National School of Drama (NSD).
  • The nine-day theatre festival will see performances from Switzerland, Sri Lanka and Indonesia along with their Indian counterparts. 

Annual Renuka Fair Begins in Himachal Pradesh

  • Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur  participated in six-day International Renuka Fair being organised in Sirmaur district from November 18-23, 2018.
  • It is an international fair which is organised every year near the Renuka Lake in the Sirmour district of Himachal Pradesh.
  • The Renuka fair is held to honour the sacrifice of Parshuram’s mother –Renuka – after whom the lake is also named. On the orders of her husband – Parshuram’s father – Renuka was killed at the hands of her son.
  • It marks the reunion of Lord Parshuram with his mother Mata Renuka once a year on the eve of ‘Dashmi’ and the people of the district take a holy dip in the religious Renuka lake on ‘Prabodhini Ekadashi’.

India Provides Rs 126.6 million financial assistance to Construct 3 schools in Nepal

  • India has provided financial assistance for the construction of three schools including one secondary school and two multiple campuses in Kaski district of western Nepal.
  • Saraswati Tika Higher Secondary School at Lekhnath Municipality has been built with the Indian assistance of Rs 37.10 million.
  • Laxmi Adarsha Multiple Campus in Lekhnath has been built with Indian assistance of Rs 48.40 million
  • Gupteshwor Mahadev Multiple Campus Pokharahas been constructed with a grant assistance of Rs 41.10 million.

Ajay Bhushan Pandey Named New Revenue Secretary

  • Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) CEO Ajay Bhushan Pandey has been named as the new Revenue Secretary.
  • He will replace Hasmukh Adhia, the Gujarat-cadre IAS officer, who is set to retire on November 30.
  • Pandey, a 1984-batch IAS officer of the Maharashtra cadre, would continue to hold the additional charge of UIDAI CEO and Goods and Services Tax Network (GSTN) Chairman till further instructions.

Ustad Amjad Ali Khan Presented ‘Sumitra Charat Ram Award for Lifetime Achievement’

  • One of India’s greatest sarod masters, Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, was presented the ‘Sumitra Charat Ram Award for Lifetime Achievement’ at the Kamani Auditorium in New Delhi on November 17.
  • He was awarded for his “immense contribution to the enrichment and promotion of the Indian classical music”.
  • The award was presented to him by former diplomat Lalit Mansingh.

Dr. Saroj Suman Gulati conferred with Global Education Leaders Award 2018

  • Dr. Saroj Suman Gulati, Director, Blue Bells Group of Schools, Gurugram has been conferred with the prestigious ‘Global Education Leaders Award-2018’ by Indian Embassy & Consulate General-UAE in partnership with United Arab Emirates Ministry of Economy.
  • She was honoured with this award during the 2nd India-UAE Partnership Summit-2018 held at Dubai from October 30-31, 2018 for her ‘exemplary contribution to K-12 education & promotion of Art & Culture’. 

Shubhankar Sharma First Indian to Win Sir Henry Cotton Rookie of the Year

  • India’s Shubhankar Sharma became the first Indian to emerge as the 2018 Sir Henry Cotton Rookie of the Year on the European Tour.
  • Sharma follows Jon Rahm (2017), Wang Jeunghun (2016), Byeong Hun An (2015) and Brooks Koepka (2014) who have been the four Rookies before him.
  • No Indian has won the Rookie of the Year award in European Tour.

Anjum Moudgil Wins Gold in 62nd National Shooting Championship

  • India’s number one women’s 50m rifle 3 positions shooter Anjum Moudgil defended her crown in the event at the 62nd National Shooting Championship Competitions in Thiruvananthapuram on November 18.
  • Punjab’s Anjum shot 458.6 in the finals to finish ahead of seasoned Tejaswini Sawant of Maharashtra, who managed 457.7.
  • Sunidhi Chauhan of Madhya Pradesh won the bronze medal with a finals score of 443.0.

Prajnesh wins Bengaluru Open ATP Challenger

Fourth seed Prajnesh Gunneswaran beat Saketh Myneni in straight sets 6-2, 6-2 to win the $ 150,000 Bengaluru Open ATP Challenger.

Ancer Becomes 1st Mexican Golfer to win Australian Open

  • Abraham Ancer has become the first Mexican golfer to win the Australian Open tournament held in Sydney. This win guarantees him a spot in next summer’s British Open.
  • Ancer, 27 won the Australian Open by five strokes to join a host of golfing greats in lifting the Stonehaven Cup.
  • He finished 16-under with 272 strokes, five ahead of second-placed Dimitrios Papadatos of Australia.
  • The world number 96, Ancer, has previously won as a professional only in the Web.com tour in 2015

‘Toxic’ Declared Oxford Dictionary’s Word of the Year 2018

  • Toxic’ has been declared Oxford Dictionary’s Word of the Year 2018 as it reflects the ethos, mood, or preoccupations in 2018.
  • It defeated words like ‘gaslighting’ and ‘techlash’ from the 2018 shortlist.
  • The Oxford Word of the Year is a word or expression that is judged to have lasting potential as a term of cultural significance,

Book on Swami Bhoomananda Tirtha by Swami Nirviseshananda Tirtha Released

  • Recently, a book has been released on the life of Swami Bhoomananda Tirtha titled ‘A Great Association-Glimpses into the Life of Swami Bhoomananda Tirtha’ authored by Swami Nirviseshananda Tirtha.
  • Swami Bhoomananda Tirtha is the renowned saint of Narayanashrama Tapovanam, Kerala, is the spiritual Guru of E Sreedharan, DMRC Principal Advisor .

National Epilepsy Day: November 17

  • National Epilepsy Day is observed annually on November 17 in India to create awareness about epilepsy. 
  • Epilepsy is a chronic disorder of brain characterized by recurrent ‘seizures’ or ‘fits’.
  • One month prior to the National Epilepsy Day, ‘World Congress on Epilepsy and Neuronal Synchronization’ was held from October 15-16, 2018 in London which presented the latest scientific improvements in the treatment of epilepsy. The theme for this year meeting was ‘Inculcate the latent knowledge in Epilepsy and Neuronal Synchrony’.
