11th World Hindi Conference Inaugurated in Mauritius

  • The 11th World Hindi Conference kicked off in Port Louis, Mauritius on August 18, 2018. The three days event was inaugurated by Mauritian Prime Minister Praveen Kumar Jagannath.
  • This year the theme of the conference is “Hindi World and Indian Culture”. The conference pledges to develop, enhance and conserve Hindi language in its original form.
  • This is the first time that representatives from all 29 states and Union Territories of Delhi, Chandigarh and Puducherry will be attending the conference.
  • The first World Hindi Conference was held in 1975 in Nagpur city of India with the objective to make the Hindi language a medium of service and knowledge and enable it to move forward with the time.

  • International Conference on Recent Advances in Food Processing Technology (iCRAFPT) was held at Thanjavur in Tamil Nadu.
  • It was held in the Indian Institute of Food Processing Technology (IIFPT), Thanjavur.

Asian Games 2018 begins in Indonesia

  • The 18th edition of the Asian Games officially began in Indonesian capital Jakarta on August 18, 2018 with opening ceremony held at Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium in Jakarta. 
  • Indonesia president Joko Widodo declared the 18th Asian Games open. The event will be held from 18 August to 2 September 2018.
  • For the first time, the Asian Games are being co-hosted in two cities; Jakarta and Palembang
  • Also for the first time, eSports (a form of competition using video games) and canoe polo will be contested as demonstration sports. eSports is expected to be a medal event at the 2022 Asian Games.

Delhi government’s S K Arora awarded with WHO World No Tobacco Day 2017 Award

  • S K Arora has been awarded the prestigious WHO World No Tobacco Day 2017 Award for his extraordinary contribution towards tobacco control.
  • He is the additional director of health in Delhi Government.

Book titled “Because he is” authored by Meghna Gulzar released

  • Meghna Gulzar (daughter of Gulzar) has authored a book titled “Because he is”. The book presents a facet of the icon that few have been aware of – as a father.
  • The announcement of the book’s publication was made on August 18, 2018, Gulzar’s 84 birthday, by publisher HarperCollins.

Book titled “Musavvir ka Khayal” authored by Sangeeta Gupta launched

  • A book of ink drawings and short verses “Musavvir ka Khayal” was launched by noted contemporary artist Anjolie Ela Menon. 
  • “Musavvir ka Khayal” contains ink drawings by artist Sangeeta Gupta, on which she has written in her handwriting the short verses, on the theme of love and longing.

Former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan Passes Away

  • Former UN secretary-general Kofi Annan died in Switzerland after a short illness. He was 80.
  • He was the first black African to become UN secretary-general. 
  • Mr Annan served two terms as UN chief from 1997 to 2006 and later served as the UN special envoy for Syria.
  • He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2001 for helping to revitalise the international body, during a period that coincided with the Iraq War and the HIV/Aids pandemic.

Former Olympic hockey gold medallist Subedar Hardayal Singh passes away

  • Former India hockey player and coach Hardayal Singh died at age 90 in Dehradun. 
  • He was a member of the team that won the gold medal at the 1956 Olympic Games in Melbourne.
  • He was bestowed with the prestigious Dhyanchand Award for lifetime achievement in sports in 2004.
