India Slips to 6th Position in Global RTI Rating

  • India has achieved sixth position out of 123 countries in the global index on Right to Information 2018 with a score of 128 out of 150.
  • The global Right to Information Rating is a programme founded by Access Info Europe (AIE) and the Centre for Law and Democracy (CLD).
  • It measures the strength of the legal framework for the right to access information held by public authorities (the right to information or RTI) based on 61 discrete indicators divided into seven main categories namely Right of Access, Scope, Requesting Procedure, Exceptions & Refusals, Appeals, Sanctions & Protections, and Promotional Measures.

India International Silk Fair 2018 To be Held in New Delhi

  • The Union Minister of Textiles, Smriti Zubin Irani, will  inaugurate the 6th edition of India International Silk Fair (IISF) in New Delhi on October 16, 2018.
  • The three-day event has been organised by the Indian Silk Export Promotion Council (ISEPC).
  • The fair will give a platform to exporters to display their products and to overseas buyers an opportunity to place orders and source their merchandize.
  • India is the 2nd largest producer of silk in the world.

46th IHGF-Delhi Fair Autumn-2018 Begins in Noida

  • Union Minister of State for Textiles, Ajay Tamta, inaugurated the 46th edition of world’s largest IHGF-Delhi Fair at India Expo Centre & Mart at Greater Noida.
  • The fair will remain open from October 14-18, 2018. It is one of Asia’s largest gifts and handicrafts fair.
  • The IHGF-Delhi Fair held biannually is organised by Export Promotion Council for Handicrafts.
  • The fair will showcase an extensive range of handcrafted products like home textiles, furnishings, carpets, decoratives, tableware and furniture among other items.

Punjab Launches 3 Mobile Apps To Check Stubble Burning

  • Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh has launched three mobile apps aimed at checking crop residue burning and creating awareness about its effects on the environment and human health.
  • These 3 Android mobile applications developed by Punjab Remote Sensing Centre (PRSC) includes:
    1. i-Khet Machine:  for facilitating farmers to have access to the agriculture machinery or equipment for in-situ management of crop residue;
    2. e-PEHaL: for monitoring tree plantation; and
    3. e-Prevent: to have prompt and accurate information about incidents of crop residue burning, according to an official statement released in Chandigarh.

Sushil Modi’s ‘Lalu Leela’ Released in Patna

  • Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi has come out with a nearly 200-page book titled “Lalu Leela”.
  • The book documents “benami” land deals allegedly involving the RJD national president Lalu Prasad Yadav and his family members.

Turtle Olly Is the official Mascot of 2018 Odisha Men’s Hockey World Cup

  • India will host the 2018 FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup scheduled to be held at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar from November 28 to December 16, 2018.
  • Turtle ‘Olly’ has been made the mascot for the Odisha Men’s Hockey World Cup.
  • ‘Olly’ represents the endangered Olive Ridley sea turtles that travel thousands of miles in the ocean and arrive in millions every year on Odisha’s Rushikulya and Gahirmatha beaches for their annual nesting. 

Anil Kumble’s start-up launches Microsoft AI-enabled ‘Power Bat’

  • Bengaluru-based startup Spektacom Technologies, founded by former Team India captain Anil Kumble has tied up with Microsoft to launch first of its kind tool in the form of AI chip powered by Microsoft’s Azure Cloud platform and its AI and IoT services.
  • The AI chip when attaches itself in the form of a lightweight sticker to cricket bats will turn them into ‘Power Bats’. 
  • The AI sensors in the Power Bat will then throw up real-time data on four parameters of a cricket shot – quality, swing, power, and twist.
  • As soon as the batsman hits the ball, data on different parameters are captured in a new unit of measurement titled Power Speks.

Novak Djokovic beats Borna Coric at Shanghai Masters Tennis

  • Novak Djokovic beat Croatia’s Borna Coric in the final of the Shanghai Masters Tennis Tournament in men’s single event.
  • In men’s double category,  Lukasz Kubot and Marcelo Melo beat Jamie Murray and Bruno Soares to claim the title.
  • The Shanghai Masters is chronologically the eighth out of the nine ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournaments on the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) World Tour season, and is the only Masters 1000 tournament not played in Europe or North America.

Great Britain beat India 3-2 in 2018 Sultan of Johar Cup

  • In Hockey, Great Britain lifted the 2018 Sultan of Johor Cup by defeating India 3-2 in the final held at Johor Bahru, Malaysia from 6 to 13 October 2018.
  • The other teams in the tournament were Japan, Australia, Malaysia and New Zealand. 
  • The 2018 Sultan of Johor Cup was the eighth edition of the Sultan of Johor Cup, a field hockey tournament.
