PM Modi Conferred with First-ever Philip Kotler Presidential Award

  • Indian Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi was presented with the first-ever Philip Kotler Presidential award in New Delhi on January 14, 2019 for his outstanding leadership for the nation.
  • The Award is a tribute to Philip Kotler, who is also known as the ‘Father of Modern Marketing’.
  • The award focuses on the 3 aspects- People, Profit and Planet.
  • It will be presented annually to the leader of a Nation.
  • Philip Kotler is a professor of marketing at Northwestern University, Kellogg School of Management. The 87 year old is world-renowned author of over 60 marketing books.

India-Myanmar begin Army exercise for UN peacekeeping ‘IMBEX 2018-19’ in Chandigarh

  • The second India-Myanmar bilateral Army exercise ‘IMBEX 2018-19’ commenced at Chandimandir military station in Haryana. IMBEX stands for – India-Myanmar Bilateral Military Exercise
  • The aim of this 6 day joint training event is to train the Myanmar delegation for participation in UN peacekeeping operations.The Indian Army has a rich experience of serving in UN peacekeeping operations, being the foremost troop contributing country in the UN.

Gujarat Becomes 1st State to Implement 10% EWS Quota for GC

  • Gujarat has become the first state to implement new provision of 10 percent reservations in government jobs and higher education for the economically weaker sections in the general category.
  • The newly introduced reservation provision will be effective from January 14, 2019 across the state.
  • The decision will be implemented in all ongoing recruitment processes including those where only an Advertisement has been published but examination is yet to be held.
  • However, benefits of the fresh quota will not be applicable in case where the process had already begun before January 14, 2019, like written, oral, computer proficiency or preliminary tests.
  • The Constitution (124 Amendment) Bill, 2019 allows this quota after amendment of Article 15 and 16.

Sushil Modi to head GoM on GST revenue shortfall faced by states

  • Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Modi will head the seven-member committee to look into revenue shortfall being faced by the states after the GST roll-out, and suggest steps for augmenting collections.
  • The GST Council, headed by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and comprising state ministers, had on December 22, 2018, decided to set up a group of ministers (GoM) to analyse reasons for shortfall in revenue collections by the states since July 2017.
  • Several states including Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Chattisgarh, Uttarakhand, Jammu and Kashmir, Odisha, Goa, Bihar, Gujarat and Delhi are facing revenue shortfall following the implementation of goods and services tax (GST).  Among the union territories, Puducherry is facing maximum shortfall of 43 per cent.
  • Out of 31 states, only Andhra Pradesh and five north eastern states — Mizoram, Andhra Pradesh, Manipur, Sikkim and Nagaland — have recorded revenue increase post the GST roll out.

Aurangabad to Host 9th International Conference on Micro Irrigation

  • The 9th International Micro Irrigation Conference (9IMIC) will be held in Aurangabad, Maharashtra from 16-18 January 2019.
  • The theme of international conference is ‘Micro Irrigation in Modern Agriculture’.
  • The conference is being organised by the Ministry of Agriculture in association with International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage (ICID), Indian National Committee on Surface Water (INCSW) and WAPCOS Limited.
  • Shri Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister for Road Transport & Highways, Shipping and Water Resources, River Development & Ganga Rejuvenation will be the Chief Guest of the event

Ananth Narayanan steps down as Myntra-Jabong CEO; Amar Nagaram to replace him

  •  CEO of Myntra- Jabong Ananth Narayanan has resigned from his post. 
  • Amar Nagaram has been named as Head, Myntra and Jabong.

Namita Gokhale wins Sushila Devi Literature Award

  • Author Namita Gokhale has won the Sushila Devi Literature Award at the inaugural edition of Bhopal Literature and Art Festival (BLF).
  • She has won the award  for her novel “Things to Leave Behind”.

Bengaluru Raptors Clinches 2018-19 Premier Badminton League

  • Bengaluru Raptors beat the Mumbai Rockets 4-3 to win their maiden Premier Badminton League 2018-19 title in finals on January 13, 2019 held at the Kanteerava Indoor Stadium in Bengaluru.
  • The victory for the team came from Kidambi Srikanth (men’s single), Vu Ji Trang (women’s single Trump match) and men’s double pair of Mohammad Ahsan and Hendra Satiawan
  • The fifth season of the tournament began on 22 December 2018 and came to end on 13 January 2019.
