Ministry of AYUSH introduced new Central Sector scheme for promoting Pharmacovigilance of AYUSH Drugs

  • The Ministry of AYUSH has introduced new Central Sector scheme for promoting pharmacovigilance of Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani and Homoeopathy (ASU&H) Drugs.
  • The objective of the scheme is to develop the culture of documenting adverse effects and undertake safety monitoring of Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani and Homoeopathy drugs and surveillance of misleading advertisements appearing in the print and electronic media.
  • Features of the Scheme
    • Under the scheme three-tier network of National Pharmacovigilance Centre (NPvCC), Intermediary Pharmacovigilance Centres (IPvCCs) and Peripheral Pharmacovigilance Centres (PPvCC) would be set up.
    • All India Institute of Ayurveda, New Delhi, an autonomous body under the Ministry of AYUSH, has been designated as National Pharmacovigilance Centre for coordinating various activities of the initiative.
    • In the initial phase of implementation, 5 National Institutes of AYUSH are designated as the Intermediary Pharmacovigilance Centres and 42 institutions of AYUSH having clinical facilities have been designated as Peripheral Pharmacovigilance Centres to take up the work of reporting, documentation, analysis, causality assessment of the adverse reactions and events associated with the consumption of Ayurveda, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy drugs. 
    • Pharmacovigilance is the practice of monitoring the effects of medical drugs after they have been licensed for use, especially in order to identify and evaluate previously unreported adverse reactions.

Centre Approves Proposal for Setting Up Water Aerodromes in India

  • The Civil Aviation Ministry has approved a proposal for setting up of water aerodromes in the country for the first time ever.
  • The Airports Authority of India has already identified the sites in Odisha, Gujarat, Assam, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh where water aerodrome would be developed.
  • In the first phase, Chilika Lake in Odisha, Sardar Sarovar Dam and Sabarmati River Front in Gujarat have been identified for development of water aerodromes.
  • Under the proposal, water aerodrome would be set up near locations of tourist and religious importance.

Chandrayaan-2 Lander to be named ‘Vikram’ after Sarabhai

  • The lander on the Chandrayaan-2 mission, which is scheduled to be launched on January 3, 2019 will be named ‘Vikram’ after Vikram Sarabhai, the father of Indian space programme.
  • The 3,890-kg Chandrayaan-2, which will be launched onboard the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV) Mk-3, will orbit around the moon and study its lunar conditions to collect data on its topography, mineralogy and exosphere.It is a Rs 800 crore project.

Income ceiling limit removed from Bengal’s ‘Kanyashree’ scheme

  • The West Bengal government has removed the annual income ceiling limit of Rs 1,20,000 from its ‘Kanyashree’ scheme.
  • As per the scheme, unmarried girls above 13 years are offered cash incentive for remaining unmarried till 18. Kanyashree was launched in 2013 to prevent child marriage in economically weaker sections with an annual household income of 1.2 lakh.
  • Successful applicants got 1,000 a year scholarship from 13 to 18 years and an one-time grant of 25,000 on remaining unmarried till 18 years.

Cosmos Bank’s server hacked; Rs 94 crore siphoned off in 2 days

  • Hackers managed to siphon off over Rs 94 crore through a malware attack on the server of Pune-based Cosmos Bank and cloning thousands of the bank’s debit cards over a period of two days.
  • The fraudulent transactions were carried out on August 11 and August 13 and the malware attack by the hackers originated in Canada, Cosmos Bank chairman Milind Kale told.
  • The Cosmos Co-operative Bank Ltd. (Cosmos Bank), established in 1906, is one of the oldest Urban Co-operative Banks in India. 

Actor Akshay Kumar appointed as Road Safety Brand Ambassador.

  • Shri Nitin Gadkari announced the appointment of Akshay Kumar as Road Safety Brand Ambassador.
  • Shri Nitin Gadkari  launched three short films for generating public awareness towards road safety. Film actor Shri Akshay Kumar has featured in these films.

N Raghuram elected Chair of International Nitrogen Initiative

  • Indian scientist-academician, N Raghuram, has been elected Chair of the International Nitrogen Initiative (INI), a global policy making initiative.
  • Raghuram is the first Indian and Asian to be elected to the Chair. He will succeed Mark Sutton of the UK Centre for Ecology and Hydrology, Edinburgh.

Usha Ananthasubramanian ceases to be MD & CEO of Allahabad Bank

  • State-owned Allahabad Bank said Usha Ananthasubramanian no longer heads the bank following the Finance Ministry directive to remove her from the post. 
  • The central government removed Usha Ananthasubramanian in exercise of powers under section 9 of the Banking Companies Act, 1970.
  • Ananthasubramanian was heading PNB before taking charge of Allahabad Bank. She was divested of her powers as the head of the bank three months ago as a fallout of the Rs 14,000 crore fraud at Punjab National Bank after being named in the probe agency CBI’s chargesheet. 
  • She was dismissed on the last working day of her service.

BCCI appoints Ramesh Powar as Head Coach of Indian women’s cricket team

  • The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has appointed former Indian off-spinner Ramesh Powar as the head coach of the national women’s cricket team.
  • He will fill the position of Tushar Arothe who resigned earlier in July.

Viraj Madappa becomes youngest Indian to win Asian Tour title

  • Twenty-year-old Viraj Madappa became the young Indian golfer to win on the Asian Tour after he won at Take Solutions Masters in Bengaluru. 
  • The earlier record was held by Gaganjeet Bhullar, who won the Indonesia Invitational, when he was 21 years and three months.

Chhattisgarh Governor Balram Das Tandon passed away at 90.

  • Chhattisgarh present Governor Balram Das Tandon passed away in at the age of 90. 
  • Tandon assumed office as the Governor of Chhattisgarh on July 25, 2014. He was a leader of Bharatiya Janata Party.
