India elected to UNHRC with the Highest Votes

  • India has been elected to the United Nations’ Human Rights Council with highest number of vote among all 18 new candidates in the five regional categories.
  • It secured 188 votes in the Asia-Pacific category for a period of three years beginning January 1, 2019.
  • In the Asia Pacific category, India got 188 votes followed by Fiji with 187 and Bangladesh 178 votes.
  • India had previously been elected to the Geneva-based Human Rights Council for the 2011-2014 and 2014-2017.

India Ranks 103 in Global Hunger Index 2018

  • India has been ranked at 103 out of 119 countries in the Global Hunger Index released annually by Welthungerhilfe and Concern Worldwide. 
  • As per the index, India’s hunger levels has been categorised as “serious” (31.1). India’s ranking has dropped three places from last year.
  • The index is based on 4 indicators which are: Undernourishment, child wasting (low weight for height)- reflecting acute under-nutrition; child stunting (low height for age)- reflecting chronic under-nutrition; and child mortality.
  • Belarus has the lowest hunger level (<5) in the index and is ranked at the top. It is followed by Bosnia & Herzegovina and Chile respectively.

Asian Para Games 2018: India Wins 72 Medals; China Tops with 319

  • The 2018 Asian Para Games was held from 6 to 13 October 2018 in Indonesia’s capital city of Jakarta.
  • Mascot: Momo was the mascot of the 2018 Asian Para Games.
  • Slogan/ Motto: “The Inspiring Spirit and Energy of Asia”
  • China led the medal tally for the third consecutive time with 319 medals (172 gold, 88 silver and 59 bronze).
  • India recorded its best-ever showing in the Asian Para Games by bagging 72 medals, including 15 Gold, 24 Silver and 33 Bronze and standing at 9th spot in the table.

International Day for Disaster Reduction: October 13

  • The International Day for Disaster Reduction is held annually on 13 October since 1989.
  • The day celebrates the way that people and communities around the world reduce their exposure to disasters and raise awareness about the risks that they face. 
  • The 2018 edition continues as part of the “Sendai Seven” campaign launched in 2016 to encourage the implementation of key frameworks and systems with the goal of saving lives, reducing disaster losses and improving management of disaster risk.
  • This year will focus on Target C of the Sendai Framework which is “Reducing disaster economic losses in relation to global GDP by 2030”.

World Migratory Bird Day : October 13, 2018

  • The World Migratory Bird Day is now celebrated twice a year. Once on the second Saturday of May as well as the second Saturday in October also. 
  • In 2018, the day is observed on October 13, 2018.
  • The theme for the day in 2018 is “Unifying our Voices for Bird Conservation”
  • The day is observed in order to raise awareness and highlight the need for protecting migratory birds and their habitats.

Veteran Hindustani Classical Musician Annapurna Devi Passes Away

  • Renowned Hindustani musician Annapurna Devi passed away from age-related issues. She was 91.
  • Annapurna Devi was an Indian Surbahar (Bass Sitar) player of Hindustani classical music.
  • The recipient of the Padma Bhushan award, was the daughter and disciple of Allauddin Khan and was married to sitar maestro Pandit Ravi Shankar.
